Bunny topiary projects are everywhere this season, and I can totally see why—they’re such a fun and charming way to decorate for spring! I’ve spotted a few in stores, but I decided to make my own, between the high prices and the fact that I don’t have anywhere to store something so bulky.
I actually made two to place on either side of our front door, and I couldn’t be more excited about how they turned out!

They’re charming, simple to put together, and made with faux boxwood balls, wooden bead wreaths shaped into ears, and a cute little bow to finish it off.
It’s the perfect DIY to welcome spring in style—without blowing your budget or taking up precious storage space.
My Inspiration
Last spring, I purchased two medium-sized faux boxwood balls from At Home to decorate our front porch.
You see, I was tired of watering and wanted something that required no maintenance!
They worked perfectly, but looked a bit small for my planters.
So I returned to the store this year and purchased two larger boxwood balls.
My original plan was to display them in different pots.

Something like this.
Then, I just happened to sit the smaller one on top of the larger one, and inspiration hit!

The stacked balls reminded me of the bunny topiaries I had been seeing in stores and on social media!
So, I started brainstorming, and here are the steps I came up with to make these adorable bunnies!
Gather Materials for a Bunny Topiary

Gather the following materials to complete this project:
- Faux boxwood topiary balls- purchased from At Home (2 sizes – one for the body, one for the head)
- Dowel rod – 1/2 inch (for stacking/support)
- 2 wood bead wreaths (Dollar Tree) to form ears
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Finger protectors
- Floral wire (to attach ears securely)
- Decorative planter or pot
- Rocks (to anchor the topiary in the planter)
- Ribbon (to make a bow)
- Wire cutters or heavy-duty scissors
- Hand saw
- Pencil
Step-by-Step Instructions
Prepare a Planter

- Place a dowel rod inside your decorative planter.
- Insert the larger boxwood ball (body) onto the rod, then the smaller ball on top (head).
- The dowel will be taller than the topiary, so use a pencil to mark where to cut the dowel.
- Remove the boxwood balls and cut the dowel rod.
- Insert the cut dowel rod back into the planter and fill it with rocks to anchor it.
Assemble the Bunny
- Place the boxwood balls back onto the dowel rod.
Attach the Ears

- Gently bend each wood bead wreath into a bunny ear shape.
- Use floral wire to attach them securely to the smaller topiary ball (head).
- One of my ears kept flopping over, so I used hot glue to keep it in place.
Note: Be very careful using hot glue, which can burn your skin. We recommend using silicone finder protectors.
Add the Finishing Touches

- With the ribbon, make a large bow. I purchased this cute bunny ribbon at Walmart a couple of years ago.
- Tie it around the neck area where the two balls meet with floral wire.
Bunny Topiary Styling Tips
Once your bunny topiary is complete, it’s time for the fun part—styling it!
We’re placing ours on the front porch, but they would look great inside the entryway or beside the fireplace!
You can use one topiary…

Or two on either side of your front door..

Providing a welcoming, symmetrical look.
Pair them with a doormat, a seasonal wreath, or potted flowers for extra curb appeal.

Stay tuned to see how to make this adorable bunny door hanger, we layered over our boxwood wreath!
Creative Variations

If the neutral look we used is not for you, try these variations!
- Use a combination of different colored ribbons for a pop of personality.
- Try spray painting the wood bead ears to match your ribbon or other porch decor.
- Purchase furry ears on a headband for a different look.
- Use mini boxwood balls for a smaller version, which is excellent for tabletops or shelves.
Final Thoughts
And that’s it—so simple, right?
I love how these bunny topiaries turned out.
They add such a fun, welcoming touch to our front porch.
It’s one of those projects that looks fancy but is actually super easy to pull off (my favorite kind!).
I hope it inspires you to make your own version too.
