Whether you fill it with eggs or an adorable bunny, this easy project will bring seasonal charm to your home—without breaking the bank!
Inspiration for This DIY Carrot Basket
While shopping at Michael’s for spring inspiration, I came across the cutest carrot basket!

It was perfect for spring, but when I checked the price, I couldn’t believe how expensive it was, $39.99—especially since it had a flimsy cardboard bottom and no lining to hide the wires on the inside (it’s been discounted since then).
That’s when I decided to make my version!
A quick trip to Dollar Tree led me to some adorable faux carrots and a cute wood tray.
With just a few simple supplies, I created a sturdier, albeit smaller, budget-friendly carrot basket for a fraction of the cost.
Want to make one for yourself?
Let’s get started!
Gather Your Materials

To recreate this charming carrot basket, you’ll need the following supplies:
- Wood tray – Dollar Tree – This will serve as the base of the basket.
- Faux carrots – (5 per bag) – Dollar Tree – You’ll need five bags.
- Brown paint – I used FolkArt in Coffee Bean.
- Paper towel – For applying the paint.
- Plastic gloves – To keep your hands clean.
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks – For securing the carrots.
- Finger protectors – To prevent burns while working with hot glue.
Steps to Make a Carrot Basket
1. Stain the Wood Tray

Instead of using actual wood stain, I rubbed brown acrylic paint onto the wood tray with a paper towel.
This technique gives the look of a stain without the fumes or long drying time.
Apply a small amount of paint and wipe it across the surface until you achieve the desired look.
Let it dry completely before moving on to the next step.
2. Attach the Carrots

Using a hot glue gun, carefully attach the faux carrots around the outside of the tray.
Start at one side and work your way around, ensuring they are spaced evenly.
Press each carrot firmly into place and hold for a few seconds to ensure a secure bond.
I used five carrots on each side and then glued a carrot onto each corner.
Note – I highly recommend using finger protectors to avoid burns since hot glue can get messy.
Style Your Carrot Basket
Now for the fun part—styling your new carrot basket!

First, I added some Spanish moss to the basket and then pulled out my spring storage box to see what I could find!
For a festive touch, you could fill your basket with Easter grass, flowers, or even sweet treats (if they’re wrapped because the tray is not food-safe).

My original thought was to display Easter eggs inside and place them next to a cute bunny on our console table.
Then, I wondered what the bunny would like inside the basket.

How cute is that?

I relocated the basket to our mantel beneath my DIY carrot wreath.
It looks like I’m creating a theme, even though I didn’t mean to!
You can display yours on the dining table, entryway, or anywhere you want to add a bit of spring charm to your home!
Final Thoughts
This DIY carrot basket is an easy and affordable project that will bring a pop of color to your spring decor.
By using Dollar Store finds, you can achieve a high-end look without the high price tag.
Plus, it’s sturdier than the store-bought version!
