I am a big fan of pumpkins, and when I spotted these adorable pumpkin placemats, I knew they were coming home with me!
At first, I thought I would use them as placemats, but then I remembered a DIY pumpkin pillow that my friend, KariAnne from Thistlewood Farms, shared a while back!
She adhered a pumpkin placemat to a pillow cover and made one of the cutest pillows I’ve ever seen!
Thanks to her inspiration, I thought of two ways to use the placemats I bought!
The first one is similar to hers!
1) DIY Pumpkin Pillow
Can you believe how cute the placemat looks on the pillow?
Gather
I will use two 24×24 pillows I purchased several years ago!
I bought these before I discovered pillow covers!
Now I only buy pillow covers because I don’t have room to store more pillows in my home!
To help save a few dollars, I’ll be using these pillows for this DIY!
Shop your house to see if there is a pillow you can use for this project.
If not, we’ve linked several pretty pillow covers at the end of this post!
Gather or purchase the following items to make your pillow:
- Pumpkin placemat
- Pillow or pillow cover that’s larger than your placemat- I’m using 24×24
- Clear thread and needle OR a hot glue gun and glue sticks OR fusible tape and an iron
- Scissors
Adhere placemat
Decide how you would like to adhere your placemat to the pillow!
If you purchase pillow covers specifically for this project, you can adhere them permanently with hot glue or fusible tape, as KariAnne did.
I’m using pillows I own and don’t want the placemats on my pillowcase permanently.
Instead, I’ll pin the placemat to the pillow and hand-sew it with clear thread.
Do you know about clear sewing thread?
It looks like a fishing line and disappears, so you don’t have to sew a perfect line!
It’s great for someone like me who does not sew very often!
Doesn’t it look great?
You can’t see the thread at all!
The best part is, if I want to use the pillow in a different season, I can remove the placemat.
Now, let’s look at another way to make these placemats into pillows!
2) Stuffed DIY pumpkin pillow
I thought the placemat would make a cute stuffed, stand-alone pillow!
Isn’t it adorable?
I love how the edges look scalloped!
Gather
Gather or purchase the following items to make this DIY pillow:
- Pumpkin placemat
- Drop cloth
- Fabric marking pen
- Pinking shears
- Hot glue gun
- Silicone finger protectors
- Fiberfill
Prepare the drop cloth
Cut a piece of drop cloth a bit larger than your placemat.
Iron the drop cloth to remove any wrinkles.
Lay the placemat on top of the drop cloth.
Trace around the edge of the placemat.
Cut out the pumpkin shape with pinking shears.
Adhere the pumpkins
Lay the placemat on top of the drop-cloth pumpkin.
Carefully hot glue three sides of the pumpkins together.
I suggest silicone finger protectors because the glue is scorching and can burn you!
Leave a small area open to add the stuffing to the pillow.
Stuff the pumpkin
Take the fiberfill and stuff the pumpkin with it.
Continue adding fiberfill until it is as plump as you like!
Close the pumpkin
Carefully hot glue the opening closed.
Display your pumpkin Pillow
Can you believe how easy it is to make pillows with placemats?
We hope this inspires you to search for pumpkin placemats the next time you shop!
