How to Hang Flower Pots for a Charming Outdoor Display

Did you ever want to create a vertical garden but had no idea how to pull it off? If so, you’re in luck because today I’m sharing how to hang flower pots! You’re not going to believe how easy it is to create a unique and charming garden-inspired display for your outdoor space.

It’s time for the July Handcrafted Society challenge, and I have to admit, I was a bit stumped when I first heard this month’s theme: Garden Made Beautiful.

We live in Florida, and our summers are so hot that I don’t have a traditional garden.

So, I was planning to sit this challenge out!

Then, during a trip to a local yard sale, I discovered the most inspiring booth.

The inventor was demonstrating Hang-a-Pot holders that make it easy to create a vertical garden display.

Since I’ve had good luck growing potted plants on our porches, I immediately started imagining how I could use them to add some garden charm to our covered lanai.

So if you’re like me and don’t have a traditional garden but want to grow some plants, flowers, or herbs, here’s a fun alternative way to get started.

And if you do have a garden, these flower pot holders would be a unique addition to your space.

Ready to learn how to hang flower pots?

Gather Materials

Gather the following items to complete this DIY project:

• Window frame
• Hang-a-Pot holders – two
• Heavy-duty zip ties
• Flower pots – two
• Potting soil
• Plants or flowers of your choice (you can even use faux, I won’t tell) – peace lily, fern
• Scissors

How to Hang Flower Pots

Transforming a window frame into a charming hanging flower pot display is easier than you might think.

Thanks to the Hang-a-Pot holders, we created a unique focal point for our lanai.

We’re using a vintage-style window frame we purchased at Hobby Lobby several years ago, but you can easily adapt this idea to suit your space.

Hang the Window Frame

The first step is to securely hang your window frame where you want to display your flower pots.

We chose a wall on our lanai above a cozy seating area, but this project would also look beautiful on a porch, patio, or garden wall.

We used a level to make sure the frame was hanging straight.

Since it will become the focal point of your display, taking a few extra minutes to position it correctly is well worth the effort.

Attach the Hang-a-Pot Holders

Here are the unique Hang-a-Pot holders.

We purchased two holders for $10.00 (which included four screws for permanent installation).

This is how they hold the flower pot.

Now let us show you how we attached the holders to our window frame.

We decided to attach ours with two heavy-duty zip ties instead of using the screws.

This clever idea, suggested by the inventor of the Hang-a-Pot system, allows you to remove or reposition the holders later without leaving permanent holes in the window frame.

Trim the ends of the zip ties once everything is secure for a clean, finished appearance.

Add the Flower Pots

For our project, we reused these DIY flower pots that I painted and stenciled a few years ago.

With the holders attached, hang your empty flower pots to make sure they’re positioned exactly where you want them before adding soil and plants.

Seeing the empty pots hanging in place also gives you one last opportunity to make any adjustments before the pots become heavier.

Plant Your Flower Pots

Place a coffee filter in the bottom of each flower pot to cover the drainage hole.

This helps keep the soil from washing out when you water your plants while still allowing excess water to drain properly.

Next, fill each flower pot with potting soil and your favorite flowers or plants.

When it came time to choose what to plant, I originally considered using colorful flowers.

However, our covered lanai doesn’t receive much direct sunlight, so a helpful employee at Lowe’s recommended choosing plants instead.

I selected a peace lily and a fern, and here’s hoping I can keep them alive!

If you prefer a maintenance-free option or don’t have a green thumb, faux plants are another great choice.

Today’s artificial greenery looks surprisingly realistic and lets you enjoy the look of a garden display without the need for watering or ongoing care.

Style Your Hanging Flower Pot Display

Once the flower pots were planted and hanging from the window frame, it was time to finish creating a cozy outdoor retreat.

Our lanai already had a great foundation with white weather-resistant wicker furniture, soft off-white cushions, and our blue-gray exterior walls.

And now… here’s the after picture!

I adore how the vintage-inspired off-white window frame ties everything together beautifully while adding height and visual interest to the seating area.

To make the area feel cozier, I added throw pillows with white swirls, which bring in another layer of texture and make the space even more inviting.

Between the chair and sofa sits a small round table that we found at a thrift store.

I placed a concrete bust filled with a faux boxwood orb on the table alongside a terra cotta saucer that matches the flower pots to use as a coaster for my beverages.

I love how its vintage-inspired Paris design complements the French floral stencils on my DIY flower pots, creating a subtle theme without feeling overdone.

Sometimes, all it takes is a few thoughtful details and a creative way to hang flower pots to transform an ordinary space into one of your favorite places to unwind.

More Ways to Use Hang-a-Pot Holders

One of the things that convinced me to purchase the Hang-a-Pot holders was seeing how creatively they could be used.

The inventor had several display ideas set up in his booth at the yard sale, and they inspired me.

In the photo below, you can see why his display caught my attention.

I really liked the decorative cathedral-style wall piece he used as the backdrop for an orchid!

This is what gave me the idea to use the window frame.

And I love how the pictures show multiple Hang-a-Pot holders that were used to create a vertical herb garden on a wooden pallet.

These versatile holders can be used in many other ways, too:
