Have you ever wondered how to personalize your Christmas stockings without putting names directly on them? DIY monogram stocking tags are the perfect solution.
I actually came up with this idea while shopping for ornaments at Hobby Lobby.

They had an adorable section of monogram letters made just for stockings, but the only initial left for our family was “H.”
I was so disappointed—until it hit me that I could make my own!
I headed over to the craft wood aisle, found every letter I needed, and suddenly got excited about painting them to match our blue, gold, and white living room decor.

This project is so easy it barely needs a tutorial, but it turned out so cute—and was such a fun idea—that I knew I had to share it with you!
Gather Materials

Gather the following supplies to make DIY monogram stocking tags:
- Wooden letters- Hobby Lobby
- Drill with an appropriate drill bit
- Paint- Annie Sloan Louis Blue and FolkArt Metallic Pure Gold
- Gold cord- Hobby Lobby
- Ruler
- Scissors
- Tape
How to Make DIY Monogram Stocking Tags

Now that you’ve gathered your supplies, here’s how simple it is to create your own DIY monogram stocking tags.
This quick project comes together in just a few steps!
1) Prep the Wooden Letters
Remove any stickers or price tags from your wooden letters.
Before drilling, check the width of your cord so you can choose a drill bit that’s just large enough for the cord to slide through.
Then drill a small hole in the upper left corner of each letter.
Brush away any dust so the paint goes on smoothly.
2) Paint the Letters

Paint each wooden initial in your chosen color.
I used Annie Sloan Louis Blue on the boy’s initials, and FolkArt Metallic Pure Gold on mine and Rich’s initials to match our blue, gold, and white living room decor.
My letters took four coats because they were white and a little slick, so don’t worry if you need multiple layers.
Just let each coat dry before adding the next.
3) Make the Cord Hangers

Cut your gold cord into five 15-inch pieces. (Our cords are longer because our garland hangs low, so adjust the length to fit your space.)

Wrap each end in clear tape to prevent fraying, then trim the tips so no threads stick out.
Slide one end through the drilled hole in the letter and tie the ends together to form a loop.
Style Ideas for Monogram Stocking Tags

Before I show you how I used mine on our stockings, here are a few fun ways to style your monogram stocking tags.
They’re so versatile—you can use them throughout your holiday decor!
- Hang them on a tabletop tree – A cute, personalized touch for small trees in bedrooms, kitchens, or entryways.
- Layer them on a garland – Tuck the letters into a mantel or staircase garland for a personalized and festive touch.
- Tie them onto gift bags or wrapped presents – A keepsake the recipient can enjoy long after the holidays.
- Add them to place settings – Use each initial as a festive “place card” for holiday meals.
- Combine with other holiday decor – Layer with ornaments, ribbon, or greenery to enhance your overall look.
Display the DIY stocking tags
Now for the fun part—showing off the finished DIY monogram stocking tags!
I hung ours on off-white faux fur stockings, and the contrast between the gold and blue letters and the soft, cozy fur really makes each initial pop.

These tags aren’t just for looks—they add a subtle yet meaningful personalized touch to your holiday decor.

If you like, you can even mix and match colors to complement your living room or mantel theme.

I love how ours coordinate with our blue, gold, and white decor, tying everything together while keeping it simple and elegant.
