The boys request colored lights, and last year we used a green, red, and white theme!

It’s filled with all the keepsake ornaments we’ve collected over the years—

Plus, the sweet handmade ones from when our kids were little.
It’s mismatched, sentimental, and absolutely perfect.
I don’t think Christmas would feel the same without it!
But… you know me.
I love to decorate, and one tree is never quite enough!
So, along with our family tree, I always put up a few themed Christmas trees around the house.
It’s a fun way to experiment with different colors, styles, and ideas, and I know many of you enjoy experimenting with your holiday decor as well.
If you’ve ever wanted to try a themed tree—or you’re just looking for fresh inspiration for your main tree this year—I’ve gathered some of my favorite Christmas tree theme ideas to help spark your creativity.
What’s the Difference Between a Theme and a Color Scheme?
Before we dive into all the fun ideas, it helps to understand the two main ways you can create a “theme” for your Christmas tree.
Both are easy, both are beautiful, and you honestly can’t go wrong with either one.

A theme is based on an idea or a style—like Nutcracker characters, gingerbread houses, or woodland animals.
These trees tell a little story, and the ornaments, ribbon, and picks all follow that same look.

A color scheme, on the other hand, keeps things simple and elegant.
Instead of focusing on characters or objects, you choose two or more colors and decorate the tree using ornaments and ribbon within that palette.
It’s an easy way to make your tree feel cohesive without having to hunt for specific themed ornaments.
Both approaches work beautifully, and you might find yourself drawn to different styles in different rooms.
Now that you know the difference, let’s look at some Christmas tree color ideas to help you pick the perfect look for your home!
Christmas Tree Color Ideas
If you want a simple and stress-free way to create a beautiful, coordinated Christmas tree, choosing a color scheme is the way to go.
It’s one of the easiest approaches because once you pick your colors, the entire look comes together almost effortlessly.
Your ornaments, ribbon, picks, and even your tree topper will all feel cohesive without needing a specific theme or motif.
Color-based trees can be soft and elegant, bold and dramatic, or playful and unexpected.
Whether you prefer neutrals, rich jewel tones, or something bright and cheerful, there’s a color palette that will instantly elevate your holiday decor.
Here are some gorgeous Christmas tree color ideas to inspire your next festive look.
Christmas Tree with Pink ornaments and a touch of Gray
I know gray isn’t a typical Christmas color, but in this particular year, our dining room walls were still gray, and I found a ribbon I couldn’t resist—it had a soft gray background with gold glitter trees.

It paired beautifully with my collection of pink ornaments and became the inspiration for the sparkly theme in this room.

I added a eucalyptus garland, various sizes of glittered orbs, sparkly roses, beaded hearts, clear glass teardrops, and the prettiest pink glass ornaments.

For the topper, I used several pink frosted glitter crabapple picks with the end of the eucalyptus garland tucked in the middle.
It turned out so soft, elegant, and sparkly—definitely one of my favorite color combinations!

Christmas Tree with Blue, Gold. and White Ornaments
I created this beautiful tree to match the colors of our living room!

It’s flocked and has such a soft, wintry feel, layered with a palette of blue, gold, and white ornaments.

These ornaments are even more beautiful in person, and many of them have glitter, so the whole tree truly shimmers.

I think this color combination goes perfectly together; it feels bright, elegant, and festive—exactly the look I wanted for this space.

White and Neutral Christmas Tree
If you love a calm and cozy look, a neutral Christmas tree might be just what you need.
This tree is filled with soft whites, champagne tones, and warm beige accents, which give it a peaceful feel.

I started by adding DIY white paper flowers and bead garlands, along with clusters of white beads shaped like little grapes.
Then I added white and champagne orbs for a touch of shimmer.

Some of my favorite ornaments on this tree are the vintage-inspired DIY orbs I made from drop-cloth fabric.
I also tucked in strips of beige ribbon with a white pattern and pieces of cream ribbon twisted throughout the branches.

To finish it off, I topped the tree with a simple gold wire star I found at the thrift store.
It’s understated, elegant, and goes with just about any style of Christmas decor.

Christmas Tree Theme Ideas
Now that we’ve covered color schemes, let’s talk about Christmas tree themes!
Choosing a theme is a fun way to decorate, as it helps everything come together beautifully and makes the process much easier.
A theme gives you direction—whether it’s inspired by something classic like nutcrackers or something cozy and natural like pinecones.
You can go as simple or as detailed as you like, and it’s such a great way to express your personality and creativity each year.
Snow Themed Christmas Tree
This little flocked tree in the corner of our eat-in kitchen brings winter magic inside!
I decorated it with a snow theme, and it truly feels like a snowy day come to life.

For the base, I used a fluffy white throw blanket with pompoms as the tree skirt—it looks just like freshly fallen snow and little snowballs.
I also added garlands that resemble snowballs to keep the look soft and wintry.

The tree sparkles with various sizes of white orbs, frosted ornaments featuring snowflakes and reindeer, delicate white icicles, and translucent glittered snowflakes.

To top it all off, I added a DIY snowflake topper that ties everything together.
It’s a simple theme, but it adds such a cozy, festive touch to the kitchen!
Gingerbread-Themed Christmas Tree
This tree is definitely one of the sweetest we’ve ever had in our home—literally!
Our gingerbread-themed Christmas tree is filled with cozy charm and homemade touches.

The tree is decked out with brown, white, and beige velvet-look ornaments that add a soft texture, along with the cutest gingerbread cookie ornaments shaped like houses, reindeer, and snowmen, as well as various sizes of white orbs.

The star of the show is the collection of DIY gingerbread houses I made from Dollar Tree dollhouses.
I also created a gingerbread garland using Dollar Tree wooden snowflakes, painted in warm, cookie-like tones.

For the topper, I made a two-story gingerbread house and added swirly white picks on each side to finish it off.
This tree makes our space feel warm, nostalgic, and a little bit magical—like stepping right into a Christmas bakery!

Nutcracker-Themed Christmas Tree
This adorable, slender tree displays a favorite Christmas theme for many, nutcrackers!

Here, we have a gold nutcracker surrounded by white berry picks and a few pink crabapple picks, adding a soft, whimsical touch.

I repeated those same picks throughout the tree to tie everything together.
The branches hold garlands crafted from pink and white fur balls, pink honeycomb ornaments, and a blend of pink and white flowers.

I also added DIY gold leaf orbs, pink glass ornaments, and of course, a few charming nutcracker ornaments to complete the look.
One of my favorite parts is the DIY tree collar—did you notice?
It resembles a pink and white drum, but it is actually a repurposed lampshade.
I adore this playful tree that’s full of festive personality.
Woodland-Themed Christmas Tree
This woodland-themed tree brings the beauty of nature right into our home.

To begin, I chose earth tones like forest green, dark brown, and snowy white to capture the cozy essence of the woods.

Then, I filled the tree with ornaments that celebrate the outdoors—DIY birdhouses and lanterns, woodland creatures, DIY pinecone crafts, and even a few mushrooms.
Each one adds so much character and texture.

For the topper, I combined two faux branches and a pair of neutral silver-dollar stems, then nestled a little birdhouse and an owl right in front of them.
It’s such a peaceful, nature-inspired look that makes the whole room feel calm and inviting.

Sports-Themed Christmas Tree
This sports-themed Christmas tree is a fun tribute to my husband’s love of athletics—especially his time playing tennis for the University of Louisville.
If you have a sports fan in your family, this is such a fun theme to personalize!
You can easily create a similar tree for your favorite team by using their colors, adding themed ornaments, or including a few keepsakes from memorable games.

I started with a white tree so the team colors would really pop, then decorated it with collectible U of L ornaments from the Danbury Mint that I’ve given him over the years.

To tie everything together, I added red and black orbs, black and white gingham ribbon, and a red ribbon with a glittery design running throughout.

The topper is a red and white star with a bow made from the same ribbons layered beneath it, and the tree skirt—red, black, and white with Merry Christmas embroidered on it—finishes the look perfectly.
Family Keepsake Ornament Tree
And last but certainly not least, we have our family keepsake ornament tree.

It’s a half tree that hangs on the wall, and it holds so many special memories.
Every ornament on this tree represents a moment in our family’s story.

It all started with a bride and groom ornament we received as a wedding gift, and each year since, we’ve added a new ornament with our family members’ names and the year written on it.

Whenever something big happens, we try to find an ornament that reflects it—like the year we moved to Florida and got a little house ornament with our heads sticking out of the windows!
If you’d like to see more of the ornaments and get more details about this tradition, click here!
It’s such a fun tradition that we all look forward to every year, and honestly, we’re starting to run out of room on our half tree.
But what an excellent problem to have!
Final Thoughts
I hope these Christmas tree theme ideas have inspired you to try something new this holiday season!
Whether you opt for a color palette that complements your home or select a fun theme that tells a story, decorating your tree should be all about creating joy and celebrating what you love most.
From a classic keepsake tree filled with memories to something whimsical like gingerbread or snow, there’s no wrong way to make it your own.
So turn on the Christmas music, pour yourself some cocoa, and have fun bringing your theme to life—you just might start a new family tradition!
