STEPS TO MAKE A DIY WOOD BEAD GARLAND
Gather supplies
- Wooden beads
- Jute twine or yarn
- Scissors
- scotch tape
- index cards
- ruler
Make garland
You can make your garland any size you like. It will depend on what you are using it for. I made my garland two feet long, counting the tassels. Here are the steps I used!
Measure jute for the length of garland you want to have- I cut a piece measuring two feet long.
Scotch tape one end of the jute.
String the beads, leaving six inches of jute at each end for the tassels.
I chose to use three different size beads. Here is the configuration I decided to use.
Make tassels
The beads are strung on the jute, so now it’s time to make two tassels!
First, cut a piece of jute twelve inches long. Repeat this step, so you have two pieces of twelve-inch jute. Set them aside. You will use them a bit later to wrap the top of the tassel.
Now it’s time to make the actual tassel. You can make it as long or short as you wish. I use an index card as a template. Actually, I use a stack of index cards about 1/4 inch high. One card will bend too easily. I want a long tassel, so I wrapped the jute parallel to the lines on the card. If you prefer a shorter tassel, wrap it perpendicular to the lines. I wrapped the jute around the index card fifteen times. If you want a thinner tassel wrap it ten times.
Cut the string away for the jute roll.
Attach tassel
Lay the index card next to the garland. Pick up one end of the garland and pull the string under the the wrapped pieces, at the top.
Make a knot as close to the bead as you can. Pull tight to gather the tassel together.
FINISH TASSEL
Do not remove the index card. Take your scissors and cut the jute along the end of the card.
Remember the twelve-inch pieces of jute you cut earlier? Now it’s time to grab one of them and tie it around the tassel. Make a knot so it will hold.
Wrap the rest of the jute around the tassel. Make a knot at the end and tuck the little bit of excess.
Sometimes your tassel may not be completely even on the bottom.
If that happens, just take your scissors and cut the extra length off the bottom.
Repeat steps for tassel number two!
