Gather materials

Before we get into the step-by-step tutorial, let’s take a quick look at the supplies you’ll need.
Most of these items are easy to find, and a few came straight from Dollar Tree—making this 4th of July wreath both festive and affordable!
Gather the following materials to complete this project:
- Basket that can hang- Michaels
- Faux flowers- I used white hydrangeas
- Flags- Dollar Tree- I used seven (3 per bag)
- Wooden skewers- Dollar Tree
- Wired ribbon- red, white, and blue– Hobby Lobby
- Brown craft paper
- Yardstick
- Scissors
- Floral wire
Steps to make a 4th of July wreath
1. Prep the Basket
Start by filling the bottom of your hanging basket with brown craft paper.
This helps create a sturdy base, and the brown paper doesn’t look noticeable through the open weave of the basket.
2. Add the Faux Flowers

Next, arrange your faux flowers in the basket.
I used white hydrangeas to keep things simple and elegant, but you can choose any flowers you like.
Fluff and adjust them until you’re satisfied with their appearance.
3. Prepare the Flags

Dollar Tree flags often have a few wrinkles when you take them out of the bag, so give them a quick press with your iron on a low setting.
Then, insert a wooden skewer into three of the flags and use tape to secure them—this gives them extra length for a nice layered effect.
4. Insert the Flags

Place all seven flags across the back of the basket, positioning them at varying heights.
I tucked the ones with skewers in first to create height, then added the rest to fill in the gaps and create a full, festive backdrop.
Note: If you plan to display this wreath outdoors, consider placing a piece of floral foam at the top of the basket to help hold the flags in place, especially on breezy days!
How to Make the Perfect Patriotic Bows
To give your wreath that extra pop of red, white, and blue, we’re making three simple bows—one in each color!
1. Cut the Ribbon

Start by cutting two pieces of ribbon for each bow:
- One at 13 inches (for the loops)
- One at 36 inches (for the tails)
Do this for each color—red, white, and blue—so you’ll have six pieces of ribbon in total.
Also, cut three 12-inch pieces of floral wire, one for each bow.
2. Create the Bow Loops

Take a 13-inch piece of ribbon and fold each end in to meet at the center, forming two loops.

Pinch the center of the ribbon where the ends overlap and wrap a piece of floral wire around it tightly to hold it in place.
You now have the basic bow shape.
3. Add the Ribbon Tails

Take the 36-inch piece of ribbon and hold it in the center. Fold the edges toward the center and lay it over the bow.

Wrap this longer ribbon around the bow you just made and secure it tightly in the center.
This gives the bow longer tails that drape beautifully over the basket.
4. Trim and Shape

Trim the tails so they’re all the same length.

For a polished finish, fold each ribbon tail in half lengthwise and cut at an angle from the folded edge to the open edge to create a decorative V-shape, also known as a fishtail cut.
Attach the Bows to the Basket

Now that your bows are fluffed, trimmed, and shaped, it’s time to attach them to your arrangement.
1. Position and secure the Bows
Decide where you’d like the bows to sit on the front of your basket.
I placed mine in a row across the front—red on one side, white in the center, and blue on the other—to echo the patriotic color scheme.
Use the ends of the floral wire from each bow to wrap it securely around the basket.
If your basket has an open weave, thread the wire through the slats.
If it’s solid, twist the wire around the floral stems and secure it tightly.
2. Final Fluff
Once all three bows are attached, give them one last fluff and adjust the tails so they cascade nicely over the front of the basket.
Style Your 4th of July Wreath – 3 Easy Display Ideas
One of the things I love most about this 4th of July wreath is its versatility!
Whether you’re decorating indoors or out, this patriotic basket looks charming in a variety of spots around your home.
Here are three simple ways to style it:
1. On a China Cabinet

Tuck the basket into the center of a hutch or china cabinet for an unexpected patriotic touch.
It adds just the right amount of seasonal color without overwhelming your everyday decor.
2. On the Front Door

Hang it on your front door to greet guests with festive flair!
The layered flags and bold bows make a big statement.
3. On the Mantel in Front of a Mirror

Lean the basket against a mirror on your mantel for a layered, dimensional look.
The reflection helps amplify the red, white, and blue colors, making it a fun focal point for your holiday decor.
Closing thoughts

I hope this easy 4th of July wreath inspires you to get a little crafty and add some patriotic charm to your home this summer!

Whether you hang it on your door, tuck it into a cabinet, or style it on your mantel, it’s a fun and festive way to celebrate Independence Day.
