I don’t know why I was drawn to them, and I had no idea what I would do with them.
But, somehow they ended up in my cart!
Meanwhile, I put up a tree in the kitchen and decided to use my snowball garland, white ornaments, icicles, and snowflakes to decorate it. Then, I remembered the snowflakes I had bought at Dollar Tree and dug them out!
I tried putting them on the tree, but they looked awkward!
But then, I held a snowflake up to the top of the tree, and guess what?
I fell in love with that amazing snowflake, and decided to paint it white!
steps to make a cheap but cute tree topper
Now let’s get this DIY started!
gather
Gather the following materials to do this project:
- Snowflakes-I bought these at Dollar Tree and yes, they were only one dollar a piece!
- Fingernail file
- Paint-I used Waverly chalk paint in White
- Paintbrush
- Paper- to protect your work surface
prep
We have a little prep work to do before we can paint the snowflakes!
First, remove the twine hanger. Save it, if you think you will reuse it!
Look at all those rough edges on the snowflake!
Maybe that’s why they only cost one dollar??
Anyway, my first thought was to use sandpaper to remove the rough edges. I didn’t think I could get into the tighter spots with a whole sheet and decided I would have to cut it into small pieces.
Then it hit me!
Why not use a fingernail file!
It worked perfectly! Look how smooth all those edges are!
It looked so good, you would have thought I spent 35 years as a manicurist instead of a hairdresser!!!
paint
So now we’re to the easy part, painting!
Or so I thought!
It was super easy to paint the flat surface of the snowflake, but it took quite a bit of time to paint around all of those edges with a small paintbrush!
If I would have had white spray paint on hand, I would have used that instead! Believe me, it would have gone a lot faster!
Instead, I turned on a Hallmark Christmas movie and painstakingly painted every edge!! Then turned them over and painted the backside!
The picture above is after the first coat of paint. I put one more coat of paint on the top and bottom. Thank goodness I did not have to paint the edges again!!!
how to style your snowflakes
Now it’s time to reveal what I did with my cheap, but cute, snowflakes!!
A TOPPER FOR A TREE
Doesn’t it look fantastic sitting atop my sweet little tree!
I still can’t believe I created a tree topper that only cost one dollar!! It’s a record!!!
hang on a mirror
I realized the other three snowflakes would look fabulous hanging from the mirror! So, I grabbed some clear thread and strung them up!
Now I know why I was drawn to those snowflakes, they were meant to be in my Kitchen eat-in area! Would you have ever guessed this cute tree topper was so cheap? Let me know in the comments below!
Blessings, Donna and Rich
