Can’t find the right colored sock when you need it? Or maybe your drawers are so overstuffed that you can’t even tell what clothes you own anymore. Learning how to organize dresser drawers can make a surprisingly big difference, not just in your morning routine, but in your sanity.
Trust me, I’ve been there.

And that’s one of the reasons we host our Summer Home Organization Challenge!
I used to stack shirts so high I only ever wore the same three from the top—and finding a matching sock felt like winning the laundry lottery.
But once I figured out a system that actually worked, life got a whole lot easier.
Today, I’m sharing the simple steps that helped me turn my cluttered drawers into calm, functional spaces—and I promise, it’s easier than you think!
What to put in a closet vs a drawer

Before we start organizing, let’s tackle a question that can make or break your dresser situation: What belongs in your dresser drawers—and what doesn’t?
If you’re anything like I was, your drawers might be pulling double (or triple) duty—holding everything from workout gear to bulky sweaters to that one random scarf you keep meaning to donate.
But here’s the thing: not every item of clothing is meant to live in a drawer.
Here’s a simple rule I follow:
- Closet = bulkier, hangable, or easily wrinkled items (think dresses, button-ups, jeans, jackets).
- Dresser = softer, foldable, everyday basics (such as t-shirts, pajamas, leggings, socks, and underwear).
If it stands up better than it folds, it’s probably a closet item.
And if it vanishes into a drawer pile never to be seen again?
Yep, time to rethink its home.
Also, if your drawers are packed and your closet has room, don’t be afraid to switch things up!
The goal isn’t to follow a rigid rule—it’s to create a setup that works for you.
How to Organize Dresser Drawers – Step-by-Step
Now that you know what belongs in your dresser, let’s talk about how to organize it so you’re not digging through the drawers every morning.
These steps are super doable, even if your drawers are overflowing right now (believe me, I know how it is).
1 ) Empty the Drawers Completely

Yes, all of them.
I know it sounds like a lot, but trust me—this is the only way to see what you’re working with.
You’ll probably discover a few long-lost treasures… or at least the match to that lone sock you gave up on last winter.
2) Clean and Refresh the Inside
Once everything’s out, give those drawers a quick wipe-down.
If you’re feeling fancy, add shelf liner or tuck in a lavender sachet to keep them looking and smelling fresh.
Because why not make your drawers feel a little extra?
3) Declutter the Contents
Now it’s time for some honest decisions.
Do you really wear all those stretched-out tanks or socks with no elastic left?
Create a toss, donate, and keep pile, and place each item into one of them.
4) Group Clothing by Category

This step makes organizing a breeze.
Sort everything into piles: t-shirts, pajamas, leggings, socks, and so on.
Grouping like with like not only helps you assign drawers more easily—it also makes it easier to see what you might have too much of (hello, 27 random t-shirts) or not enough.
Helpful tip: Make sure you’ve done all your laundry before this step. You want to see the full picture of what you own so you’re not assigning drawer space without accounting for items still in the wash.
5) Assign Each Drawer A Category
Now that you’ve got your categories, give each one a home.
Keep your most frequently used items in the top drawers and less-used items (such as seasonal pajamas or backup socks) in the lower drawers.
It’s like creating your own little system that actually makes sense for your daily routine.
6) Embrace Rolling or File Folding Instead of Stacking
This one’s a game-changer.
Instead of stacking clothes on top of each other (and only ever wearing what’s on top), try file-folding or rolling them so you can see everything at once.

This drawer holds my workout clothes, and it’s very slim, so I roll them.
These techniques seriously changed how I get dressed—and bonus: it makes drawers look super satisfying.
Want an easy way to get perfectly folded clothes every time?
I recently purchased a clothes-folding tool, and I honestly wish I had done it sooner.
It helps fold everything uniformly so your drawers look neat with minimal effort.

In the picture on the left, I used the folding board on the bottom row of t-shirts. You can see how each shirt is the same size. On the right, every shirt was folded using the board.
Plus, the board makes folding so much more fun!
I wish I had had this when my kids were young!
7) Use Drawer Dividers or Organizers
Drawer chaos typically occurs when items slide around and lose their designated place.
That’s where dividers come in when you organize dresser drawers.
They help keep everything neat, tidy, and in its proper place.
You don’t have to spend a lot to get started.
You can buy ready-made organizers, create your own with cardboard, or even repurpose small boxes you already have on hand.
I started out using cardstock and black electrical tape to create sections for my socks and underwear.

It worked okay for a while, but the cardstock was a bit too short, and the tape kept popping off, so it’s not a long-term solution.

When I helped my son organize his room, we used cardboard and duct tape, and that setup has held up surprisingly well!
These days, I try to upgrade one area each year during my seasonal reorganization.
This time around, I finally invested in real drawer organizers for socks, underwear, and bras—and let me tell you, it was totally worth it.
I purchased this seven-piece drawer organizer set from Amazon, and it works perfectly for my needs!
Here are the before-and-after pictures of my drawers.

I love how I can see and easily reach any bra I need. It’s perfect for regular bras and sports bras.

As you can see in the before picture, my cardboard inserts were no longer working. Now, check out the after picture – I adore how I can see every pair of underwear in the new organizer.

Notice in the before picture that the cardboard pieces kept my socks separated by type (no-show, low-cut, quarter). However, I still had to dig for the pair I wanted. Now look at the after picture. With the organizer, I can see every single pair and easily grab the one I need.
8) Rotate Clothing Seasonally
Unless you wear tank tops in January or fleece in July, there’s no reason to keep everything in your drawers year-round.
Store out-of-season clothes elsewhere to free up space.
Your future self will thank you when it’s sweater season and you’re not digging past ten pairs of shorts to find one.
Final Thoughts
Are you feeling inspired to organize your dresser drawers?
It doesn’t have to be overwhelming—it just takes a little time and a few effective organizing tricks.
Whether you’re folding with a fancy new tool or just rolling your t-shirts by hand, the goal is to create a space that makes your daily routine easier (and maybe even a little more enjoyable).
Once everything has a home, you’ll be amazed at how much calmer your mornings feel.
So go ahead, tackle those drawers—you’ve got this!
