Looking to add a bit of sparkle to your home for Valentine’s Day? These simple DIY glitter hearts are the perfect way to do it. They’re easy to make and add just the right amount of shine.
This year, I found myself craving a little extra sparkle to celebrate Valentine’s Day, so I reached for a couple of Christmas eucalyptus garlands I bought from Hobby Lobby several years ago (you can see how I originally used them in our Christmas dining room here).

I have a definite love/hate relationship with them—mostly because they’re covered in glitter.
I hate the mess glitter makes, but it’s so pretty that I keep finding ways to use the garlands year after year.
Here they are!

After draping the two garlands across the mantel, I began to imagine hearts that appeared to be gently dripping from under the leaves.
So off to the store I went.
At Hobby Lobby, I found a bag of wooden hearts in two sizes, along with a flat, white organza ribbon.
My next stop was Lowe’s to look for spray paint.
I was hoping to find something in a rose gold shade, and imagine my surprise when I discovered rose gold glitter spray paint!
At that point, I figured if I was going to deal with glitter, I might as well go all out, and the idea for these glitter DIY hearts was born.

Can you believe how evenly the glitter covered the hearts?
They turned out so pretty!
This spray paint is so amazing, I have a feeling you’re going to want to try it too.
Gather Materials

Gather the following items to complete this project:
- Wooden hearts (two sizes in a bag) – Hobby Lobby
- Flat ribbon (white 1/8in X 8yd organza) -Hobby Lobby
- Glitter spray paint (rose gold) – Lowes
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Finger protectors
- Scissors
- Clear tape
- Cardboard (to protect your work surface)
- Wax paper
- Plastic gloves
Steps to Make DIY Glitter Hearts
Prep the work surface
Before getting started, I recommend protecting your work surface.
I covered our garage floor with cardboard and then added a layer of wax paper on top.
I wasn’t sure if the glitter spray paint would stick to the cardboard, but the wax paper worked perfectly.
I also wore plastic gloves while painting.
The wooden hearts are very lightweight, and the spray paint can easily move them around.
Wearing gloves made it easier to reposition the hearts without getting glitter on my fingers.
Spray paint the hearts

Lay the wooden hearts on the wax paper, ensuring they don’t touch.
Shake the glitter spray paint for 2 minutes, then apply light, even coats.
Several thin layers are more effective than a single heavy coat and help prevent drips.
Allow the hearts to dry completely between coats.
Before you start spraying: This project uses glitter spray paint, so I recommend working in a well-ventilated space. I painted mine in the garage with the door open and wore gloves—mostly to avoid sparkly fingers for the rest of the day.
Attach the ribbon

Once the hearts were dry, I cut the ribbon lengths by eye rather than measuring.
I simply held each heart up to the mantel to decide how long I wanted it to hang.
Then, I used my hot glue gun to secure the ribbon to the back of each heart.
Hang and style the DIY glitter hearts

To hang the hearts, I used clear tape to attach the ribbon directly to the mantel.

Be sure to space the hearts at different heights to create the look of them gently cascading—or “dripping”—down from the garland.
Other Ways to Use DIY Glitter Hearts

Even if you don’t have a garland to hang these from, there are plenty of ways to style DIY glitter hearts around your home for Valentine’s Day.
Here are a few ideas:
- Hang them from a mirror or picture frame
- Drape them along a mantel, shelf, or console table
- Attach them to a grapevine wreath or heart-shaped topiary
- Tuck them into a tiered tray for a subtle Valentine’s touch
- Use them as package or gift wrap accents
- Hang a single heart from a cabinet knob or door handle
- Use them to embellish a napkin holder
Final Thoughts
I love how these DIY glitter hearts add just the right amount of sparkle for Valentine’s Day, especially when paired with the garlands I already had on hand.
They’re simple, budget-friendly, and easy to customize for any space in your home.
Oh, and guess what…
One of these glitter hearts is even making an appearance in my next project, where I’m upcycling a grapevine heart topiary to display on the mantel (click here to see it).
Sometimes a little sparkle really does go a long way.
