Recently, we relocated our TV console table to our eat-in kitchen to use as a buffet, so we need to remove items that belong in the living room and replace them with items we use for dining and entertaining.

We hope you’ll join us as we share how, with a bit of planning, your dining spaces can be both practical for everyday life and beautiful enough to welcome guests.
To get started, let me walk you through my simple 6-step strategy for dining room organization—it’s the method I use to tackle any space in my home, and it works every time.
My 6-Step Strategy for Dining Room Organization
When it comes to organizing any space in your home, I like to follow a simple 6-step strategy.

We even have free printables to make the job easier!
Here’s how to use them to help organize your dining room:
1. Prepare
Gather a few supplies before you begin:
- Trash bag- for anything that needs to be thrown away
- Cardboard box- for items you want to donate or sell
- Laundry basket- for things that belong in another room
2. Purge

Remove everything from the space and sort each item into one of these categories:
- Trash- goes straight into the trash bag
- Donate/Sell- place in the cardboard box
- Relocate- put into the laundry basket to return to its proper room
- Replace-decide which items truly belong in the dining room and group like items together
3. Polish
Once the space is empty, it’s the perfect time to give it a deep clean!
Work from top to bottom (light fixtures, furniture, baseboards, and floors).
Use my printable checklist to keep track of each task as you go.
4. Personalize
Now the fun begins! Ask yourself two important questions (and jot down your answers on the printable):
- How does the dining room need to function for my family’s specific needs?
- How can I make the space more visually appealing?
Your answers will guide you in putting the room back together.
5. Place
Return everything to the dining room in an organized way.
- Toss the trash bag
- Drop off the donation box
- Relocate items from the laundry basket to their proper rooms
- Arrange what’s left in a way that makes sense and looks beautiful
6. Put Back
The final step is the secret to long-term success: make it a habit always to return items to their designated spot.
This simple step will help you maintain your newly organized dining room.

Helpful Dining Room Organization Tips
When it comes to keeping your dining room both beautiful and functional, organization is key.
This space often holds more than just a table and chairs—it may also house china, serving pieces, table linens, and even seasonal decor.
Without a system, things can quickly feel cluttered or out of control.
These dining room organization tips will help you maximize the use of your furniture, create storage solutions tailored to your family’s needs, and keep your dining room prepared for both everyday meals and special gatherings.
Use Furniture for Smart Storage
The right furniture can double as beautiful decor and practical storage.
Whether you have a china cabinet, sideboard, or even bookshelves, each piece can help you keep your dining room organized while showing off your style.
China cabinet or hutch

Investing in a china cabinet or hutch is one of the best ways to add vertical storage to your dining room.
The closed cabinets underneath are perfect for storing larger serving pieces that you don’t use every day, while the shelves above keep dishes neat and within reach.

I use our cabinet to store all of our glass serving dishes, bowls, and cake plates.

I love that the top section can also serve as a display area—you can decorate it with seasonal items or show off a few favorite pieces to add personality to the room. I added a few pumpkins and dried florals for Fall!

Our cabinet also has drawers, where I currently store our napkin holders.
This is one of my favorite furniture pieces because the combination of hidden storage and open display makes it both practical and beautiful, allowing you to maximize your space without sacrificing style.
Sideboard, buffet, or even a dresser

A sideboard or buffet is a hardworking piece of dining room furniture, as it offers ample storage and serving space.
The drawers are ideal for storing flat items, such as tablecloths, placemats, or napkins.

I’m using the center drawer to store our table runners.
The cabinets below can hold serving trays, pitchers, or even small appliances you use for entertaining.

We had baskets in ours to store our DVDs and CDs, but now they hold our tablecloths and napkins.

The top surface can double as a serving station during gatherings or be styled with decorative items when not in use.
It’s a versatile option that blends function with style.
And here’s a little secret—you don’t have to buy a new sideboard to get this look and function!
A dresser from another room can easily be repurposed for dining room storage.
It’s a budget-friendly solution that gives you the same organizational benefits while adding a unique, collected feel to your space.
Display cabinet or bookshelves
If you don’t have traditional dining room storage pieces, a display cabinet or even a set of bookshelves can work beautifully to complement your space.

We have a pie shelf that sits between our kitchen and the eat-in dining area.
Open shelving like this provides an opportunity to display your favorite dishes, glassware, or collections while maintaining organization and easy access.
Adding baskets or bins to the lower shelves can hide less attractive items while providing flexible storage for items such as napkin rings, seasonal decor, or candles.
Don’t feel like you need to purchase something new—this is a great place to get creative with what you already own.
A bookshelf from another room or a cabinet you no longer use elsewhere can be repurposed into a stylish and functional storage solution for your dining room.
It’s a budget-friendly way to maximize space and still make the room look pulled together.
Where to Store Dining Room Items Without Traditional Furniture
Not every dining room has a hutch or sideboard, but that doesn’t mean you can’t keep the space organized.
With a bit of creativity, you can find storage in other places throughout your home.
Here are a few ideas that work beautifully:
Butler’s Pantry
We’re fortunate to have a small butler’s pantry right off the dining room.

Since I moved our napkins and tablecloths to the buffet, I now have more room for my placmat and charger collection.
This area is ideal for storing serving pieces, glassware, and select seasonal dishes.

If you have a pantry space like this, it can act as an extension of your dining room storage.
If not, don’t worry, we have more tips for you below!
Bar Cart
A bar cart is another stylish and functional option.

Ours sits right in the dining room, and it’s excellent for holding glassware, beverages, or even extra linens.
I usually decorate the top of it for the holidays.

Because it’s mobile, you can easily roll it into the kitchen or living room when entertaining.
Other Smart Storage Options:
- Kitchen cabinets- dedicate a shelf or two for extra dishes, glassware, or table linens.
- Kitchen island- if it has cabinets or shelves, reserve a section for serving pieces that you don’t use daily.
- Closet or hallway storage- add shelving or bins to a nearby closet for storing seasonal items.
- Rolling cart- beyond a bar cart, a utility cart can hold linens, napkin rings, or trays.
- Open shelving- floating shelves in the kitchen or dining area can double as both display and storage.
- Storage bench or banquette seating- perfect for a breakfast nook or small dining space.
- Basement or attic storage- use sturdy bins for holiday dishes or items you only pull out once or twice a year.
Incorporate Multi-Purpose Solutions
These days, many dining rooms are used for more than just eating.
Perhaps your table serves as a homework station, craft area, or even a home office.
If that sounds familiar, the goal is to create storage solutions that are both practical and blend in with the room’s overall style.
A few ideas include:
- Attractive storage boxes or baskets- keep school or office supplies contained, then tuck them away when it’s time for dinner.
- Rolling carts- store art supplies, puzzles, or paperwork; roll them out when needed and back into a corner when done.
- Closed storage- such as a sideboard, cabinet, or dresser- can hold non-dining items behind closed doors, so the room still feels polished.
- Defined zones – designate a small section of the room (such as a corner cabinet or a shelf) for multipurpose use, so clutter doesn’t take over the entire space.
With a little planning, your dining room can serve multiple purposes while still maintaining an organized and welcoming appearance.
Seasonal Refresh for the Dining Room

Your dining room likely gets the spotlight during the holidays, but it deserves attention all year long.
Every new season presents a natural opportunity to refresh and organize this space.
- Clear the surfaces- before decorating, remove any lingering clutter so your seasonal touches can really shine.
- Swap decor intentionally- rotate centerpieces, artwork, or display pieces in the hutch to reflect the season while keeping items tidy.
- Reevaluate your storage as you bring out seasonal dishes, glassware, or linens; take a moment to assess whether your current storage setup is still effective or if it needs adjustment.
- Keep it simple- a clean, uncluttered dining room allows seasonal decor to stand out without feeling overwhelming.
By pairing an organizational reset with your seasonal decorating, you’ll not only keep the space beautiful but also prevent clutter from sneaking back in.
Closing Thoughts
Dining room organization doesn’t have to be overwhelming—it just takes a little planning.
Whether you rely on classic furniture, such as a china cabinet, get creative with pieces you already own, or utilize a cart for extra storage, the goal is to create a space that suits your lifestyle.
Remember, the dining room isn’t just about meals—it’s about gathering, celebrating, and making memories.
When it’s organized and clutter-free, you’ll be able to enjoy those moments even more.
