Whenever I find myself in this situation, the first place I go is Dollar Tree!
I love to take super cheap items and turn them into beautiful home decor!
So off to the store I went!
As I was walking up and down the aisles I spotted this…
a styrofoam heart!
I thought it looked like the perfect size for a topiary!
At first, I thought about adding greenery or moss to make it look like a typical topiary, but that didn’t match the look of the tablescape I was working on.
You see, last week I made these cute and easy hearts that I’m going to incorporate into my tablescape.
I wanted to come up with something similar.
So, I went to Hobby Lobby and bought this…
Teddy Bear yarn in white!
I was lucky because the yarn was on sale that day! Woo Hoo!
My first experience with Teddy Bear yarn was last year when I made a beautiful pink heart with it!
It is the softest and most snuggly yarn I’ve ever touched!
I thought it would make the sweetest-looking topiary!
Ready to see it?
Here you go!
Well, do you agree?
Isn’t it the sweetest!
Now let me show you how easy it is to make!
You’re not going to believe it!
How to make a Dollar Tree Heart DIY Topiary
Gather
Gather or purchase the following items to do this project:
- Styrofoam heart-Dollar Tree
- Teddy Bear yarn-Hobby Lobby
- Dowel rod- or a stick from your yard
- Flowerpot- or any container you already have
- Styrofoam
- Hot glue gun
- Hot glue sticks
- Spanish moss
- Spray paint (optional)
Prepare the flower pot
I had this dowel rod left over from a previous project, it is twelve inches long.
I decided to spray-paint mine white. You don’t have to do that, it’s an optional step!
Next, cut a piece of styrofoam that will fit inside your flower pot.
My piece of styrofoam is a cone, so it’s larger at the bottom. I cut smaller pieces to stuff on the sides to make sure it could not move!
Push the dowel rod into the styrofoam.
If you don’t have a dowel rod laying around your house as I did, go into your yard and cut a straight branch off your tree!
Cover the styrofoam with moss.
If you’re wondering about the pot, I painted it last Spring. Click here to see how to age terra cotta pots!
Gently push the bottom tip of the heart onto the dowel rod to make a hole.
Do not push hard or the styrofoam might break, I had to glue a small piece back onto mine!
Remove the heart from the dowel.
Make the heart
Now it’s time to adhere the teddy bear yarn to the styrofoam heart.
When working with styrofoam, it’s best to use a dual-temperature glue gun.
Set the glue gun to low, so you don’t melt the styrofoam.
Be very careful with hot glue, it can burn you! We suggest using silicone finger protectors so you won’t get blisters!
Make a stripe of hot glue from the bottom tip to the top center of the heart.
Attach the yarn at the bottom of the tip and adhere it to the glue. Move the yarn up to the center point of the heart.
Turn the heart over and run a stripe of glue to the bottom tip. adhere the yarn to it.
Do not block the hole with your yarn, glue around it.
Repeat the steps until one side of the heart is covered with yarn.
Repeat the steps to cover the other side of your heart!
Doesn’t it look great?
Now there’s just one more step!
Add hot glue inside the hole and attach it to the dowel rod!
Style your topiary
I’m going to show you the topiary in three different ways!
I’m not sure which one I’m going to use for my Galentine’s tablescape next week!
It looks fabulous without any embellishment!
The bow looks super cute!
The trim around it adds some color and looks beautiful!
