I found a way to use neutral colors instead!
Let’s create a beautiful pillow out of rosettes made from a drop cloth and scrap sweater pieces!
During the holidays, I went a bit crazy making rosettes out of torn pieces of drop cloth and ribbon.
I added them to cone Christmas trees and Christmas ornaments.
I love the vintage-inspired look they created!
A few weeks ago I made pillows with old sweaters to cozy up my house for winter.
I considered making rosettes out of the scraps to add to the pillows but decided I liked them better plain.
That’s when the idea came to me!
I should make a Valentine’s pillow to coordinate with the sweater pillow!
Rosettes would be perfect to embellish it!
So, I hope you’re not getting bored with me making rosettes or pillows because here we go again!
I love how it turned out!
Who knew scraps from a sweater and a drop cloth could turn out so beautiful!!
I’m so excited to show you how I made it!!
Gather Supplies
Gather the following items to do this project:
- Pillow insert- mine is 18 x 18
- Drop cloth
- Ruler
- Scissors
- Disappearing ink pen
- Sweater scraps
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Silicone finger protectors
- Sewing machine- or hot glue pillow if you don’t have a sewing machine
- Thread
- Sewing needle
Steps to Make a heart pillow
I think it’s important to tell you all that I don’t know how to sew.
I can only do the basics, and I’m not sure I do them well!
But that’s what DIY is all about, teaching yourself as you go!
Anyway, this is how I made my pillow!
Cut
Measure your pillow insert. Mine is 18 x 18.
Lay the drop cloth flat on your work surface.
Measure and mark a square 19 inches high and 19 inches wide.
Cut out the square.
Repeat the steps to make a second square!
Pin
Pin the two squares together.
I measured 1/2 inch from the edge and then marked where to sew with dots.
Sew
Sew three sides of the square together.
On the fourth side, sew a couple of inches from each edge.
You have to leave a hole big enough to insert the pillow!
Turn the fabric inside out.
If the fabric is wrinkled, take time to iron it.
Insert the pillow into your new pillowcase.
Pin the opening closed and sew it together.
Make rosettes
Now it’s time to create the rosettes for our Valentine’s pillow!
cut dropcloth
Lay drop cloth flat.
Measure a 12 x 12 square and cut it out.
Make one-and-a-half-inch marks across the top of the square.
Cut a one-inch slit on each mark.
Tear the drop cloth into eight pieces so the edges will fray!
You now have eight 12 x 1-1/2 inch pieces.
You will also need three 10 x 1-1/2 inch pieces to make a few smaller rosettes.
cut sweater
Cut the sweater into strips that are approximately 1/2 inch wide. Don’t worry if the strip is thicker in some areas than others.
You will need two strips that are 10 inches long and twelve strips that are 12 inches long.
hot glue
Twist the sweater strip.
Put a drop of hot glue on the tip and twist it inward to make a tiny circle.
Be very careful with the hot glue, it is very hot and can cause blisters!
We suggest you use silicon finger protectors linked in the product list at the end of this post.
Continue to glue and wrap the strip into a circle.
Cover the end of the strip with glue and slide it under the circle. Press down to adhere.
Repeat the steps to finish the sweater strips into rosettes.
Do the drop cloth strips that same way.
Make a heart out of the rosettes
Determine placement
Arrange the rosettes into the shape of a heart on the pillow!
Look closely, and you’ll see how some of the rosettes are smaller than the rest.
Play around with the shape until you are happy with it.
Don’t worry about the holes, they can be filled later, or you can keep it that way!
adhere rosettes
Hot glue each rosette onto the pillow.
Fill in holes
If you don’t like seeing the holes in between the rosettes, you can fill them in with small pieces of twisted drop cloth.
The small pieces blend in to nicely fill the holes!
Style your Heart pillow
You can use it in a chair by itself.
Or pair it with a coordinating pillow!
I hope I’ve inspired you to create a Valentine’s pillow out of rosettes!
If I can make this with my limited sewing skills, I know you can too!!
