During my adult life, I have been collecting pieces of furniture! But, through the years my tastes have changed, and now I have a lot of pieces that I don’t love anymore. In the past, I never really knew what my decorating style was, I just bought stuff I liked. As you’ll see, my living room has three completely different types of tables in it. The style and colors do not match! My goal is to make my living room look more cohesive and have a better flow. To achieve that goal, I brought out the paint and got started on four living room table makeovers!! I can’t wait for you to see the transformation!

Tiny wood table
This tiny wood table almost didn’t make it to Florida with us! It had been in one of the boy’s bedrooms and was in such bad shape, I almost put it in the donate pile.
At the last minute, I found a place for it in the U-Haul and decided I would donate later if I couldn’t find a place for it.
After we moved in, I realized that the tiny table would work perfectly between my two Louis chairs. I was so happy I threw it in the U-Haul at the last minute!!!
However, it was in terrible shape (now you know why I almost left it in KY)! I knew it could be salvaged so, I took that little table out to the garage and started sanding!
Next, I painted it with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in French Linen. I think this is the perfect “greige” color because it looks beige in some lights and gray in others.
I decided I wanted it to look a bit grayer, so I chose to seal it with Annie Sloan white wax. You can see how it changed the color in the picture above. The top of the table is the French linen paint by itself, and the bottom half has white wax over the paint.
The last step was to distress it with sandpaper. I roughed up the edges a bit and it turned out fantastic!
Here is a close-up of the finished product! I think the color and distressing look amazing next to the chairs.
Here is the table styled between the two matching chairs.
glass/metal coffee and end table
I purchased these glass and metal tables for my first house way back in 1993!!
I almost sent them to a consignment shop because I was tired of them. I changed my mind, and now I’m so glad I did!
The tables were originally a deeper green color, and I white-washed them shortly before we moved to Florida to tone them down. Unfortunately, they still had a very green cast, which I did not want.
So I grabbed my trusted Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Old White and I started painting!
I wanted them to look older and more worn, so I grabbed my Valspar Sealing and Antiquing wax, and got to work!
See how the antiquing wax completely changes the color from bright white to a cream color.
Here is the coffee table after, no more green cast!
And now for the finished end table!
Round end table
I purchased this end table at Kirkland’s several years ago.
I still like the table, but I thought it looked too dark with the rest of the furniture in the room. So, I decided to use the same paint technique that I used on the glass/metal coffee and end table.
To make it look similar to my bookshelves, I decided not to paint the top and small shelf on the bottom of the table.
The last step was to seal with wax. It always looks so scary when you put dark wax over that white paint! Once you wipe it off, it brings out all the details of the metalwork!
Isn’t it beautiful! I just love the toned-down look the white paint gave it!!
Before and After
I love to see before and after pictures side by side! It lets you see the dramatic difference that a little paint can make. Here are the before and afters of all four of my living room table makeovers!

My cohesive living room
I just love how all of the furniture pieces in my living room are different, but now they look like they belong together.
Also, I love that all of the colors of the main pieces are neutral so that I can easily add color for the different seasons!
I’m so pleased with how this room has turned out! We went from a miss-matched bunch of furniture to a beautiful cohesive look!
Well, what do you think of my living room table makeovers?? Do you need to do a project like this in your home? Painting furniture in similar colors can make your room look more cohesive and have a better flow!
