First, I’ll make whimsical gingerbread houses and then create a delightful gingerbread garland to decorate our Christmas tree!
Are you excited to see these affordable projects that are as fun to create as they are to display?
Let’s get started!
Gather Materials
Gather the following materials to complete this project:
- Dollar Tree doll houses
- Rustoleum spray paint- nutmeg
- Puff paint- white
- Chalk marker- white
- Wire cutters
- Small screwdriver
- E6000 glue
- Floral wire
Steps to make a gingerbread house
Paint houses
Paint the houses with nutmeg spray paint- it’s the perfect color for gingerbread.
First I spray-painted the back of the houses with two coats and let it dry.
Then, I turned them over, painted the fronts with two coats, and let them dry.
Embellish Houses
Now it’s time to add embellishments to make the houses look like they have icing!
I used two different methods, there are pros and cons to them both.
I’ll let you decide which one you like better!
Left House
The house on the left side is embellished with puff paint. The paint goes on a bit glumpy and is hard to control for small details. However, it looks more like icing and works wonderfully on roofs!
Right House
The house on the right is trimmed with a chalk marker. The marker makes it much easier to outline the bricks and make small dots. However, it’s duller than the puff paint and does not look as much like icing.
Steps to Make a Two-story Gingerbread Tree Topper
I wanted to use one of the houses as a tree topper but it was too short!
To solve the problem, I stacked two of the houses and it turned out great!
Here’s how I did it!
Prep the Houses
Buy two houses with purple roofs and slide the roof off one of the houses.
Use wire cutters to remove the plastic pieces holding the roof. Notice the piece on the left is removed.
Remove the white trim around the doors and windows with a small screwdriver.
Note- The house comes with furniture, and you need to save two of the purple rectangle pieces for a balcony.
Paint The Houses
Spray paint the front and back of the houses, doors, and rectangle pieces in nutmeg, just like in the tutorial above.
Once dry, replace the white trim pieces and the doors.
Grab E6000 glue for the next step.
Adhere the Houses and Embellish
Using the E600 glue adhere the top and bottom sections of the house together.
Then glue the two rectangle pieces together and let them dry.
Glue the rectangle pieces over the top door to make it look like a balcony and let dry.
Grab your puff paint or a chalk marker to embellish the house.
Here’s a comparison between the one-story and two-story houses!
Attach Wire
Cut a piece of floral wire and glue it to the back of the house so you can easily attach it to the tree!
Steps to Make a Gingerbread Garland
Gather Materials
I wanted to make gingerbread ornaments for the tree, so I bought a bag of wooden snowflakes.
Then, I saw four snowflakes tied together with jute twine (like a small garland) and thought they might look good on the tree too.
Note- After I painted the small garland in the picture above, I draped it on the tree. I loved it so much that I sent Rich to the store to buy six more of them. They did not have the same shape snowflakes anymore, but that was ok with me. Since I added so many garlands I chose not to use the single snowflake ornaments.
Gather the following materials to complete this project:
- Dollar Tree wood snowflakes and short garland
- Rustoleum Spray Paint- nutmeg
- Puff Paint- white (or white chalk marker)
Paint Snowflakes
Spray paint the snowflakes and let them dry.
Turn them over, paint the back side, and let them dry.
Embellish Snowflakes
Embellish one side with puff paint and let dry.
Decorate Your Gingerbread Tree
This tree brings a smile to my face every time I look at it!
The gingerbread tree topper and houses add a whimsical, eye-catching element!
And the garland ties everything together with a cozy charm.
Conclusion
Creating festive decor doesn’t have to cost a fortune, and these two Dollar Tree gingerbread-themed Christmas DIY ideas prove it!
Both projects are simple, affordable, and filled with holiday spirit.
Happy crafting, and may your holidays be as sweet as real gingerbread!
