And now, let’s organize our laundry room!

Our Winter Home Organization Challenge continues this week in the laundry room. If this is your first time visiting our blog, we are so glad to meet you! You can learn more about our seasonal challenge here!
Our laundry room is one of the busiest rooms in our house!
Why so busy, you ask?
Because it serves two other purposes besides the laundry!
I typically do at least one load of laundry every weekday, but this room also serves as an entryway to our garage and a pet station.
So, not only does it need to be functional, but I want it to look beautiful too!
Here are some of my best tips to create a beautiful and organized laundry room!
Maximize space above & below the washer & dryer

The best way to maximize space in a laundry room is to add storage above and/or below your washer and dryer.
Add shelves or cabinets above your machines to use the vertical space the wall provides!

When we bought our washer and dryer, we purchased pedestals for extra storage!
We love them because they elevate the machines to a more comfortable height!
Store laundry supplies within arm’s reach

Under the washer, we store laundry detergents, whiteners, stain removers, and color catchers.

Under the dryer, we keep dryer sheets, lint remover, an iron, a steamer, a funnel, and distilled water to fill the steamer and iron.
Store laundry items on trays

On top of the washer, I store my main laundry detergent and some decorative items on a round metal tray.
I love to add vignettes to the top of my washer and dryer.
Not only do they look nice, but they allow storage of more items within arm’s reach!
The mix of functional and decorative items makes the space look pretty.
The trays also make it easy for me to move the items when I need to access the black fabric bins!

A wood tray sits on top of the dryer and holds clear jars filled with dryer balls, clothespins, and coins I get out of people’s pockets!
Use fabric bins on top of the washer

We use four fabric cubes to store our backstock of toilet paper, tissues, paper towels, and storage/trash bags.
We sat them directly on top of the washer and dryer, which prevented us from having to buy and install a second shelf.
As you can see in the picture above, we installed a white shelf directly above the bins!
Use decorative baskets

Use cute decorative baskets to store items on your shelves!
I purchased mine at Home Goods many years ago!
Store items on the side of the dryer

I made this adorable lint bin for the side of my dryer last year!
It worked perfectly and has held up well, considering I made it out of a cracker box!
Our son still wears a mask to work, so I relocated our clean and dirty mask baskets from the top of the washer and put them next to the lint bin!
Find a space to dry clothes

I use a rolling rack to dry clothes in my laundry room.
If you don’t have the space for a rack, you can hang a rod someplace in the room or purchase a drying rack that pulls down from the wall.
How to add beauty to the laundry room

The laundry room is the perfect place to add fun artwork that can help with the chore of laundry!
I have a sign that explains what the laundry symbols mean! It is super helpful!!
I also have a place to store single socks until their mate can be found!

I usually hang this beautiful picture in my living room during spring!
Rather than put it in storage for the rest of the year, I hung it in the laundry room!
Most people don’t hang art this high on the wall, but I like it, and that’s all that matters! Right??
If you think I’m crazy for hanging it here, let me know in the comments at the end of the post!
Does the laundry room have a door to the outside?

If your laundry room has a door that leads outdoors, you should organize it to store coats, purses, keys, shoes, etc.

We have a place to hang items right as you enter the room!
If you need more help in this area, check out our post on how to organize entryways to your home!
Storing pet supplies in the laundry room

If your laundry room has access to the outdoors, it can be the perfect place to store pet supplies.
As mentioned earlier in the post, we store pet items in the laundry room.
If you have pets, read this post on beautifully organizing pet supplies.
Strategy to organize your laundry room
You’ve seen my tips to help you create a beautiful and organized laundry room, and now it’s time for you to take action!
I have six steps that I always use to organize a room. The steps are Prep, Purge, Polish, Personalize, Place, and Put Back.
We call this the 6/P Strategy!

Keep reading, and I’ll explain each step!
PREP
Collect the following items: Trash bag, cardboard box, and 2 laundry hampers.
PURGE
Remove all items from the laundry room.
- Trash – Throw away any items you no longer use.
- Donate – Put items that are in good condition, but you have no use for into the cardboard box.
- Relocate – Place any items that don’t belong in the room into laundry hamper #1.
- Replace – Put items that need to stay in the room in the Laundry hamper #2. Arrange “like” items into categories. Here are a few categories of items you may have in your laundry room. Laundry supplies, cleaning supplies, paper and plastic supplies, pet supplies, and first aid supplies.
POLISH
Now that the laundry room is empty, you can clean using a top-down approach.
Don’t forget to clean your washer and dryer inside and outside.
PERSONALIZE
It’s time to personalize the area; start by asking yourself the following questions:
- How does this space need to function for my personal needs? Do I have to use the room for anything besides laundry?
- What is causing clutter in this space?
- Have I removed all nonessential items from the room so it can function productively?
- What items do I need to make or purchase to contain items in this space?
- How can I beautify the space so I enjoy spending time there?
PLACE
Time to put things back in an organized manner!
- Trash – Place the trash bag in your garbage can
- Donate – Take the donation box to your favorite donation center
- Relocate – Place items in laundry hamper #1 into the room they belong in
- Replace – Place items in laundry hamper #2 back in the laundry room
PUT BACK
This is such an important part of keeping your home organized! You must learn to put things back in the laundry room where they belong, or you’ll end up back at square one!!

Donna, I have such Laundry room envy right now! It is so organized and not to mention pretty. I had no idea you could even get storage underneath washer and dryers. That is such a great idea. Well, I can hardly wait to get mine looking half as great as yours. Have a wonderful week.
Thank you so much, Meagan! The pedestals are wonderful for front-loading washers and dryers because you don’t have to bend over so far to get the clothes in and out! But the bonus is all that extra storage!
