Do you pull out green decor for March seventeenth? I only own one thing for this holiday, and I’m getting tired of it. So, today I’m sharing a simple St. Patrick’s Day DIY decor makeover!
When I was a little girl, my mom would hang a paper decoration on the front door for major holidays.

I remember pulling the cut-outs from the drawer in the living room coffee table and staring at them!
I was always excited to hang one up.
They looked something like this.
Do you remember those? Did you have something like that at your house?
You know what? I think that was the beginning of my love for seasonal decor!
I don’t decorate for every holiday, but I think it’s fun to at least add something festive to the front door!
And that leads us to this piece of home decor I bought several years ago!
I bought this from Hobby Lobby and I think they still sell it!
It’s adorable, but I’m getting bored with it, plus the ribbon got a little wonky in storage, so it’s time for a little makeover!
In Spring, I like to lighten up my decor and add pops of green color with moss and topiaries!
With that in mind, here’s a look at my new St Patrick’s Day decor!
Well, what do you think?
I’m in love with its mossy goodness!!
Here’s how I made this fun sign!
Steps to makeover St. Patrick’s Day decor
Gather
Gather or purchase the following items to complete this DIY:
- St Patrick’s Day sign- Hobby Lobby or Dollar Tree
- All-purpose moss mat
- Hot glue gun & glue sticks
- Silicone finger protectors
- Scissors
- Paint can opener
- Tweezers
Prep
We’ll begin by taking this sign completely apart!
First, remove the welcome section from the sign. I used tweezers to twist the wire open.
Next, pull the bow off of the sign.
Then, remove the metal wire by prying the staples up with a paint can opener.
I tried to pry the lighter green hearts from the shamrock but they wouldn’t budge!
Makeover
Now let’s use our DIY magic!!
Lay the sign on top of the roll of moss and cut it around the edges.
Turn the sign over so the smooth side is on top.
Add hot glue to one section of the shamrock and gently push the moss against the sign.
I used my low heat setting to make sure the glue did not melt the backing off of the moss!
Be very careful during this step as hot glue can burn you. We highly recommend using silicone finger protectors!
Repeat the step to adhere the other two sections of moss to the shamrock.
Turn the shamrock over.
Cut the excess moss from the edges of the shamrock.
Look at that, the shape is perfect!
Now let’s add one thing back to the sign!
I love the look of this wrapped wire shamrock, so I decided to add it back to the sign with hot glue.
Now let’s have fun and display our new St. Patrick’s Day decor!
How to style DIY St Patrick’s Day decor
I adore my new piece of decor so much, I don’t want to hang it on my front door where I’ll rarely get to see it!
Instead, I came up with some ideas to use in the house!
Hang it on a window frame
Hang it on the china cabinet
Use it in a vignette
That’s a wrap on my St Patrick’s DIY makeover!
If you love the look of this and you’d like to make one, I bet you could buy a shamrock sign similar to this size at Dollar Tree!

This is just what the Leprechaun ordered Donna! I do not usually decorate for every season either, but I like to have a little something on my door. Funny, since we never use our front door, but I guess it looks festive for the mailman everyday anyway. I always fall in love with your makeovers!

You are the sweetest Cara, thank you so much!
