When we moved from our old Kentucky home to Florida, I donated the majority of my winter clothes. There were a few sweaters I just couldn’t bear to part with. After living here for over a year, I discovered there’s no need to keep them! I decided to make a beautiful winter wreath from three of my old sweaters!

Let the fun begin!
Finding inspiration
It took a bit of reflection before I was ready to emotionally give up my sweaters!
Isn’t that silly??
I had not worn the things in over a year, they were taking up precious space in my closet, and yet, I was still hesitant to say goodbye!
Then one day, I made a big decision…
I would upcycle my sweaters!
I wouldn’t be able to wear them, but I would still be able to see and enjoy them!
Now I just needed to figure out how to do it!
So I went to my favorite place for inspiration, Pinterest!
To my surprise, I found tons of ways to upcycle old sweaters!
Pillows, stockings, leg warmers, hats, lampshades, wreaths, and the ideas went on and on!
But, my very favorite thing I saw was a wreath made by Yvonne at Stone Gable.
Isn’t her wreath beautiful! If you’re interested in home decor you should check out her blog!
gather ITEMS for your wreath
Gather the following items to make the wreath:
- Straw wreath-purchased at Michael’s, I used 18 inch
- Three old sweaters
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Floral pins-purchased from Hobby Lobby
- Yarn-purchased at Walmart
- Two bells-purchased from Target
- Floral wire
Prep
Before we can make a winter wreath from my sweaters, we need to do a bit of prep work!
cut sweater strips
Ready or not, here I go!
I’m going to do it!
I’m going to cut up my sweaters!
I cut the sweaters into approximately four-inch strips.
I needed two strips of each color. So I have a lot of sweater material left over! Who knows what I’ll make next?
Measure yarn
I used one piece of yarn that was 30 feet long! After I cut the yarn, I rolled it back into a ball so it would be easy to wrap it around the wreath!
Make a winter wreath from sweaters
Wrap sweater strips
Turn your straw wreath upside down and get your floral pins ready.
Take your first strip and attach it to the backside of the wreath with the floral pins. Then wrap it around the wreath.
Overlap the second strip a bit where the first strip ended. Secure both strips with floral pins.
Continue around the wreath!
Secure the last strip and you have a wreath!
wrap yarn
Wrap the yarn around the wreath once and tie a knot to secure it!
Continue wrapping the yarn in different directions until you come to the end! I tied the end off on the backside of the wreath and secured it with one more floral pin!
embellish Your wreath
The inspiration wreath was embellished with pinecones, but I decided to use bells instead!
The bells are from the Hearth and Hand with Magnolia collection at Target.
I used the velvet ribbon to tie one bell to the other!
I attached the top bell to the wreath, on the backside, with floral pins.
make a hanger
I needed to make a hanger, so I could put the wreath on my front door.
Wrap floral wire around your fingers and secure it by wrapping the wire around itself.
Wrap two more times and secure the end of the wire.
Attach to the back of the wreath with floral pins!
the finished project
I am in awe of my new wreath!!
The sweaters look prettier on the door than they did on me lol!
Those sweet bells make the most beautiful music every time I open the front door!
The wreath looks so warm and cozy!
My new winter wreath, made from my sweaters, looks perfect hanging on my front door! Well, my friend, what do you think about it? Do you have some old sweaters you’d be willing to cut up?? Let me know in the comments below!

It was scary cutting them up but I rarely wear sweaters in Florida and they were taking up space! So glad I was able to repurpose them! Thank you!
