Sound too good to be true?
Well, it’s not!
I used to get excited at the beginning of the year and think that I could organize my entire home during the Winter and be done with it.
Guess what??
I never succeeded.
It was too much to do all at once.
But, I was able to turn things around, when I decided to divide the tasks into smaller chunks.
I made a goal to organize a few spaces each season of the year.
The thought of organizing my whole house didn’t seem so overwhelming when I divided it up over time!
Why organize your home by the season
Decide what areas of your home you want to organize.
Assign each area to a season of the year.
I have divided my home into four zones and tackle one zone each season.
You are welcome to follow my plan or organize any rooms that you want.
Here are the four zones I have created:
- Working: These are the rooms that I work in, on a regular basis-the office, kitchen, and laundry room. The kitchen is a big job, so I separate it from the pantry. I do the same in my office by organizing the paper clutter on a different day.
- Personal living: These are the rooms that are personal to each individual who lives in our home. Master bedroom, additional bedrooms, closets (bedroom, linen, cleaning), master bathroom, additional bathrooms.
- Entertaining: The main rooms a guest would frequent when coming to our home. Entryway, living room, dining room, family/playroom, guest room.
- Outdoor: All outdoor spaces of our home. Garage (shed), Porch (patio, deck), Attic (unfinished basement), Cars (camper, boat), Yard.
the Winter Home Organization Challenge
What will you organize this Winter?
Will it be an entire room, say your kitchen?
Or will you organize your cabinets?
Maybe you need to start with just one drawer?
The good news is, you get to decide!
Here at our house, we will organize the working zone I mentioned above.
WINTER Home Organization Challenge: WORKING ZONE
- Kitchen
- Pantry
- Laundry room

I had never thought about organizing according to the season! We moved 6 months ago, so I’ve already done tons of purging before the big move. My biggest thing to tackle now is just finding new homes for everything that actually work how we use the space. I’ve already rearranged the kitchen cabinets a few times as I’ve figured out what is a more natural home for things based off how we use the space.

Hi Brooke! People ask me why I organize my whole home every year, and that’s because it takes a while to figure out the best place to put everything, just like you talked about in your kitchen! I hope my seasonal plan can help you organize the rest of your house! Have fun organizing!

Love that you break things down into seasons, Donna, it’s so helpful! Thank you for always passing your best organizing advice on to us. I’m a fairly organized person and we keep our house pretty tidy (the garage is a nightmare right now though) and I always learn something new from you every time I read one of your posts. I can’t wait to learn more from you this year too! Cheers to creating simple systems that work in every season. Hugs, CoCo
