Six easy steps to organize pet supplies
Prepare
Grab a garbage bag and a cardboard box. Gather all the items you have in your house you use for your pet(s). Examples would be food, bowls, collars, leashes, meds, grooming supplies, toys, cat litter, etc.
Purge
Trash -Discard any items that are expired or you no longer use.
Donate -If you have items that you aren’t using but are still in good shape, consider donating them. Animal shelters are always in need of items. Place those items in a cardboard box.
Replace -Categorize the items you want to keep by putting like items together. Here are the main categories most people have: pet food, walking supplies, pet meds, grooming supplies, pet toys, pet travel supplies, pet clothes, important papers.
polish
Clean all items that you can. Wash the dog beds, toys, and dog clothes. Sanitize food and water bowls.
Personalize
Decide where you will store the pet items. It’s best if you can keep all items in the same space. Many people use their laundry/mudrooms. If that’s not a possibility, maybe a closet or bookshelves will also work. Maybe you have extra space in a kitchen or bathroom cabinet.
The next step is to consider how you will contain the items in each category you determined. There are so many pretty containers specifically made for pets. Home Goods is my favorite place to find pet organizing items. Consider purchasing matching plastic tubs, baskets, or boxes to beautifully organize your pet supplies.
Place
Trash -when you are finished, put the garbage bag in your trash can.
Donate – take the cardboard box to your vet, an animal shelter, or a donation center.
Replace – place the items you decided to keep into the new space in an organized manner.
Put back
The key to keeping your pet items organized is putting them back in the appropriate place when you finish with them.
How I personalized my pet supplies
I keep the majority of our pet supplies in the laundry room. In my old Kentucky home’s laundry room, I had shelves to store our pet items on. If you’d like to see it, click here, and scroll through the laundry room organization post until you get to the pet part. Right now, I have no room in our budget to add cabinets or shelves to the laundry room, so I had to come up with another storage solution.
repurpose a storage bench
I decided to repurpose a storage bench. We used this functional piece of furniture in the foyer of our Kentucky home. Luckily, it fits perfectly between the dryer and the garage door! Let’s see what a little paint and some fabric can do for this bench!
PAINT STORAGE BASKETS
The brown and tan colors don’t go so well with the gray walls and tile. As most of you know by now, I’m tired of the color brown. I’m trying to make the house look lighter and brighter so, I decided to give the bench a make-over. I started by spray painting the tan baskets white.
make a dog food storage container
I needed a container with an air-tight lid to store dog food. The hard part was finding something that would fit in the opening of the bench. To my surprise, I had one container that barely fit. I spray-painted it, and the lid, the same color white as the baskets.
Next, I pulled out my handy, dandy Cricut cutting machine and found this cute bone with the word “yum” inside. I cut it out and applied it to the plastic tub.
Reupholster a bench seat
I have no idea why I bought this piece of black, white, and gray fabric. I’ve had it for several years and was thrilled to find it in my bag of fabric pieces.
Since the bench is black, the washer and dryer are white, and the floors and walls are gray, this combination of colors was perfect!
I removed the old fabric, added another layer of batting over the foam cushions, and stapled them. And then stapled the fabric to the board. So excited, it looks brand new!
Now the bench is ready to fill with pet supplies! Here’s another pic of what it looks like now! I think it’s a perfect example of how you can beautifully organize your pet supplies!
get a cute rug
I removed the brown and tan rug and added this adorable doggie footprint rug. I think it just makes the space! Previously I used it in our basement in KY. Do you think it’s cute?
picture your pets
A great way to personalize your space is to add a picture of your fur babies! Isn’t this the cutest frame, not to mention the cuties in the picture! You can’t help but love those sweet faces!
HOW I ORGANIZE MY PET SUPPLIES
I organize my pet supplies into zones. First, I’ll share the ones I use, and then I’ll tell you about other zones you might need.
Pet food zone
Dry food
Life will be easier if you store your pet food in the same area you feed your pets. It’s important to keep dry food in a sealed container to keep it fresh. Just as important, it can prevent your pet(s) or other critters from getting into it! We order our dog food from Chewy.com. To store it, we purchased a large container specifically for dog food. Unfortunately, it was taking up valuable floor space in my laundry room. So, I’m thrilled to have the smaller container tucked away under the bench. Now we keep the large container in the garage and fill the smaller container when needed. Here’s a pic of the large container we keep in the garage.
Treats
There are tons of cute, decorative containers you can store treats in. If you purchase one, make sure the lid has an air-tight seal, so treats stay fresh. Store your container in an area that pets can’t reach. I keep our dog treats in the pantry. Check out the cute containers I personalized just for them. I used my Cricut cutting machine to make a “B” for Barkley and a “G” for Gracey.
walking zone
If possible, keep all the items you use to walk your pets by an exterior door. Consider hanging leashes up. If that doesn’t work for you, store them in a drawer or basket. Look at the picture below, somebody wants to go for a walk!
If you live in an area with extreme temperatures, keep coats and booties here as well. If you take long walks, consider a collapsible/travel bowl to give them a drink of water. Don’t forget to keep disposable bags handy for dog waste. You don’t want to leave “presents” behind for your neighbors! We hang our leashes on the wall across from the black bench. Disposable bags are in the cute red fire hydrant!
grooming zone
It’s so much easier to find items if they’re stored in the same place. Keep brushes, combs, and shampoo/conditioner in a basket or plastic tub. If you do the actual grooming yourself, keep trimmers, scissors, nail clippers, styptic, tweezers, and teeth cleaning items, together.
MEDICAL ZONE
It’s helpful to store medical supplies together. Include your pet’s prescription medicine(s), flea/tick/heartworm medicine, and first aid supplies. If your dog had a past medical procedure and came home with a “cone of shame”, store it here. They’ll be so glad you saved it!
pet toy zone
I suggest using a basket, fabric bin, or bucket, to gather and store pet toys. I keep our basket next to the back door. It also holds two old towels we use to dry the dogs off when they get wet from the rain. The towels are the perfect height to sit toys on so the dogs can reach them. The basket is another great example of how you can beautifully organize your pet supplies.
pet travel zone
If you travel long distances with your pet, keep a list of items you need to pack. Here are some items to consider: crate, collapsible travel bowls, food, water bottle, treats, toys, beds, medicine, leashes/leads, disposable bags, cat litter, and a small box to put it in. If you don’t use the listed items daily, store them together until your next trip.
Pet clothes zone
I do not have any pet clothes but if you dress up your pets, organize their clothes. Make a miniature pet closet to hang up each item. If you have multiple outfits for seasons or holidays, store similar items together in plastic tubs, boxes, or bags.
Cat litter zone
If you own a cat, the laundry room is a great “out of the way” place to keep the litter box. Store litter, a scoop, disposable bags, and cat box liners near the litter box.
important pet papers zone
It’s important to keep track of all of your pet’s health records, especially if you need to take them to a different veterinarian, groomer, or boarding facility. You’ll want a list of their meds, allergies, and a record of shots. If you already have a filing system, store the records there. If not, you can store them in a folder or a three-ring binder. Put them in your pet’s medical supply zone if there is room.
