Our dining room was okay before.
But we felt like it was missing character and coziness!

Our dining room is the first room you see when you walk into our house, so we wanted it to have a little wow factor!

It was a lot of work but so worth it!
Here are the steps we took to makeover our dining room!
Steps to makeover a Dining room
Incorporate a new rug
Many elements make a room feel cozy, especially a new area rug.
Rugs help to define a space and add warmth to it!
We chose the Hiti Cream Washable Performance Rug.
Here are a few of the reasons why we love it!
Color
The colors in this rug bring all of the existing elements together.
The blues blend beautifully with the velvet seat cushions of our chairs, and our table brings out the light gray hints within the rug.
The cream color of our china cabinet and the velvet curtains flank the rug beautifully on each side.
Last but not least, the tan color throughout the rug matches the wood tone of our chairs and the new chandelier!
It’s Washable
This rug will get a lot of foot traffic, and since it’s in a dining room, there’s a good chance someone will spill something on it eventually!
Since it’s washable, I can entertain without the fear that the rug could be ruined.

Build A Faux Fireplace Mantel
After we moved into this house, I missed having a fireplace mantel to decorate for each season!
So, we decided to build a faux fireplace mantle to add character and interest to the dining room!
Bring on the holiday season!
Add Interest to The Ceiling With Crown Molding
This is a formal dining room, so we wanted to dress it up with crown molding!
Feature the Walls With Picture Frame Molding
The crown molding was a great start, but we knew the room needed more!
So, we added picture frame molding on the walls!
Paint The Room And The Moldings One Color
So we decided to go the trendy route and paint the walls and all the molding the same color.
At first, I thought we would paint the walls blue to match the seat cushions.
It would have looked dramatic and beautiful, but since I decorate for every season, I wanted to have a neutral background.
Instead, we chose Sherwin Williams, Pure White.
Replace the Chandelier
The chandelier that previously hung in this room was purchased for our primary bedroom.
When it arrived, it was broken, and Wayfair sent us a replacement and told us we could keep, donate, or throw away the broken light.
We did not have money in the budget to purchase a dining room light fixture, so we hung the broken one up until now!
Today, we have this gorgeous French Country wood and white chandelier we purchased from Amazon!
I could not believe how the paint finish matched our new rug perfectly!
We think it makes the space, and Rich installed it himself!
Dress Up The Room With Window Coverings
Drapes
We ordered these pretty and functional velvet curtains from Amazon in an ivory color.
They are room darkening and give us privacy in the evenings.
Hardware
We purchased the rod and crystal finials when we moved into the house.
They came from Bed, Bath, and Beyond.
Paint the China Cabinet
Two years ago, I painted the china cabinet with Annie Sloane Old White and then used brown wax to antique it.
I love this look!
Add Finishing Touches With Accessories
Table Centerpiece
I painted a vintage picture frame white and used it to enclose a vignette with a candlestick and two white chippy statues surrounded by a eucalyptus garland.
Bar Cart
Our metal bar cart holds a medium artichoke statue, a short white distressed candlestick, and a white cup on the top shelf.
And an ice bucket and wine glasses on the bottom shelf.
Mantle
The mantle holds a Grecian bust filled with ivory roses, a white distressed medium candlestick, and a small white-lidded dish.
The opposite side holds a tall white distressed candlestick, a tall and small artichoke statue.

I enjoyed this post so much! When I worked designing hotels, my favorites were renovation instead of new construction. The main reason is that I looooooved the before and afters. It is so much fun to see the transformations.

Type of rug and what it’s made from, this one is washable.
Color and pattern, so it is cohesive with the decor of your home.
