Do you feel the same way or does the idea of changing your decor stress you out?
If decorating is stressful for you, I have some tips that will help you out!
But first, let’s take a look at the before and after pictures of Griffin’s bedroom!
Before and After
If you’d like to see the strategy used to organize the items in this bedroom click here!
How to start a BEDROOM makeover
Before I decorate a room, I ask myself the following two questions: Do I have a decor style? And do I have an inspiration piece or color?
Let’s talk about each question and figure out how to turn this boring bedroom into a space any gamer would love!
Do I have a decor style?
I lean towards the French Country Farmhouse style.
However, I don’t want to force that style on my boys!
I want them to have a bedroom that they enjoy and feel comfortable in.
Griffin loves to play video games and watch Youtube videos of people playing games.
He is an artist and spends lots of time drawing.
He is a collector of Pokemon cards, figurines, and Disney pins!
We made over his room with each of those points in mind and decided to go with a modern style!
Do I have an inspirational piece or color?
Griffin currently has a rug of a Poke ball in the colors red, black, white, and gray.
We will use the rug as our inspiration piece!
Seven steps to decorate a room
After answering the two questions above, we have a definite direction to head.
I like to break the room down into seven categories, so I don’t get overwhelmed!
Let’s take a look at each category and makeover this boring bedroom into a gamer paradise!
1) Window Treatments
When we moved into the house, we bought curtains that would match the walls.
They are gray and lined with blackout fabric.
They are very functional and he likes them so, we are keeping them for now.
We chose a black industrial rod to hang them.
2) Lighting
Griffin has two black metal floor lamps with storage shelves. That provides light on each side of his bed!
He chose a black metal flush mount ceiling light with a simple design.
3) Walls
When we moved into this house, every room was painted the same color of gray, Silverplate by Sherwin Williams.
We left three of his walls that color, but the highlight of his room is the modern black geometric accent wall! Click here for the accent wall DIY tutorial!
Most people put an accent wall behind the bed. If we would have done that, the only time it’s seen is when we walk into the room.
We wanted him to be able to look at it and enjoy it, so we put it on the opposite wall.
4) Floors
The carpet is gray and looks nice with the other elements of his room.
5) Furniture
Griffin has had the twin beds and the nightstand for many years. It’s a more traditional style, but we have no budget for new furniture at this time.
He is an artist and needs a desk instead of a dresser. He has had the art desk for several years and it is very functional for him!
He’s a gamer and was very excited to purchase a new TV for his room.
6) wall hangings
The two pictures hanging on either side of his window have a lot of sentimental value to me.
They are coloring sheets that I colored and framed as gifts when the two oldest boys went to college!
Our oldest son’s favorite animal is the elephant.
Griffin’s favorite animal is the wolf
They both went to Miami University whose school colors are red, white, and black.
Since the colors match perfectly, we decided to hang them in Griffin’s room!
We used a rug as wall art and added clear shelves to display his figurines!
7) Accessories
We purchased his bedding from Target when we moved into the house.
The geometric stitching mimics his new modern accent wall!
We purchased two matching black shelves to display his collection of books and sculptures.
We even painted his brown trash can to match the room!
We attended the Haven Blog Conference and were gifted a can of paint from Black Dog Salvage Furniture Paint!
The color is called “I Need a Bandage” and it looks perfect in his room!
I really liked the coverage, and clean-up was a breeze!
a great room for a gamer
We are so pleased with the results of Griffin’s room makeover!
Most importantly, this gamer is thrilled to go from a boring bedroom to an amazing and functional space to play and work!!

I literally can’t get over this transformation, Donna! What a cool space! My nephews would lose their minds over a space like this because they love to game. I had no idea you could rent gaming trucks for birthday parties like you rent food trucks but it’s totally a thing now. Love how you guys let your son enjoy what he loves and gave him a space he can treasure. You did such a great job! Hugs, CoCo
