A couple of months ago I was walking up and down the Christmas aisles at Walmart when, what to my wondering eyes should appear but…
These lovely pink gift bags!
As soon as I saw them, I knew I wanted to create a nutcracker-themed dining room for Christmas!
I thought the bags would be perfect to make whimsical art to decorate the mantel.
So today, we’ll guide you through a simple DIY project to turn those beautiful bags into eye-catching wall art that will bring holiday cheer to any space.
Aren’t these the cutest pictures?
I can’t wait to show you how easy they were to make!
Let’s get started!
Steps to Make DIY Christmas Wall Decor
Gather Materials
Gather the following materials to complete this project:
- Frames- we used two vintage frames bought at yard sales and one we made from scrap wood
- Gift bags- Bag with three nutcrackers, bag with one nutcracker
- Scissors or mat and rotary cutter
- Foam board– Dollar Tree
- Glue stick- Walmart
- Duct tape
- Paint- Walmart– optional
Prep the gift bags
Remove the ribbons, tag, and cardboard insert from the bag.
Then, cut the bag in half.
Cut the foam board
Cut the foam board to fit inside your frame.
Lay the foam board over the gift bag and draw around the edges.
Cut the picture out.
Adhere bag to board
Spread the glue stick over the back side of the gift bag and carefully lay it on top of the foam board.
Press the bag down to remove any wrinkles and let it dry.
Insert The Art Into the frame
Push the foam board into the back of the frame.
Extra tips
Here are two issues I encountered when making my Christmas wall decor.
What if the holes in the bag show?
I had some gold star stickers in my scrapbook stash that I used to cover the holes.
If you don’t have stickers, you can cut a star out of the leftover sides of the gift bag and glue those over the holes.
What do you do if the foam board doesn’t fit inside the frame?
Since we made this from trim pieces the art did not fit inside like a traditional frame.
So we taped the foam board to the back of the frame with duct tape.
How to Make a Frame from Scrap Wood
If you don’t have empty vintage frames around your house, like I do, you can make one!
We had scrap pieces left over after framing our bathroom mirrors and I did not want them to go to waste!
You can buy pretty trim pieces from your local home improvement store to make your inexpensive frames.
Cut Angles
Measure and cut your frame pieces, and make sure the inside opening is perfect for displaying your artwork.
Using a miter saw cut at 45 degrees to the left and right so your frame pieces look like those in the picture above.
Adhere frame
Glue the frame pieces together with E6000 and let dry overnight.
Don’t worry if your edges don’t fit perfectly together, you can fix that in the next step!
Fill crevices
Use wood filler to fill in the crevices between the boards.
Let dry and then sand smooth.
Add Embellishments
To dress up the frame add wood appliques.
Use wood glue and clamps to hold them in place while they dry.
Paint
While I’m painting our DIY frame, I will change the color of the blue frame!
First, I primed both frames with BIN primer and let them dry.
Next, I painted both of them white.
Display your DIY Christmas Wall Decor
There are so many fun ways to display DIY Christmas Wall Decor!
Hang individual pictures on a wall…
Or line up your frames across a mantel like we did!
Create a gallery wall with multiple pieces…
Or consider hanging them like a banner or garland.
No matter how you display them, these handmade works of art are sure to make your home merry and bright!
Conclusion
Creating festive DIY Christmas wall decor from gift bags is a simple and affordable way to bring holiday cheer into your home.
With just a little effort, you can transform everyday items into unique holiday decorations.
So grab your favorite gift bags and some old frames, and get crafting!
