You see when we moved into this house over four years ago, we envisioned the rooms downstairs with beautiful and elegant wood molding.
Unfortunately, wood molding is expensive, so we knew we would need to add it slowly.
So, we put our dreams of a gorgeous feature wall in our room on hold and did a mini bedroom makeover instead.
This is what it looked like when we finished.
It was pretty and functional, but it didn’t have that wow factor I craved.
In the next couple of years, we put our kids first and added a feature wall in two of the boy’s bedrooms.
Last year, we made over our dining room and added beautiful wood molding!
But, this year, it’s all about our primary bedroom and we’re getting a feature wall, well actually walls-plural!!
The wait is over!
Are you ready to see what it looks like now?
How’s that for a transformation?
And you know what makes it even more amazing?
We did it all on a budget!
Seven Budget-friendly Bedroom Makeover Ideas
Here are seven creative ideas we used to achieve a stylish makeover without breaking the bank.
1) Add Interest with wood moldings
We are thrilled with the beauty and elegance of the wood trim in our bedroom!
Adding a feature like this adds drama to a room but is not cheap because wood is expensive right now.
So to make this project budget-friendly, we installed it ourselves!
First, we added crown molding around the ceiling and then picture frame molding to the walls.
Isn’t it amazing how trim can add character and interest to a room?
Now I have that wow factor I was looking for!
Budget Tip: Don’t be afraid to try a DIY project, it can save you hundreds of dollars!
2) Change the paint color
The easiest way to completely change a room’s feel is with paint.
However, choosing the perfect color can be tricky!
We suggest buying paint samples to test how they look in different lighting.
Narrow down your choices to two or three colors and paint swatches on your wall.
Notice how the colors change throughout the day depending on the light.
We chose the color in the center of the picture above, it’s Blustery Sky by Sherwin Williams.
It’s a gorgeous moody blue that gives cozy vibes to the room!
To save money, we painted the room ourselves and bought the paint several weeks before we needed it, to take advantage of a 40% off sale!
Do you like how we painted the moldings and walls the same color?
I adore this trend because it makes the room look more spacious and elegant.
Budget Tip: Subscribe to your favorite paint store’s email list to be notified of sales and buy paint when it’s 40% off!
3) Refresh your bedding
To update a room’s look and add pops of color consider layering your bedding.
We kept our white bedspread and layered it with an inexpensive comforter set I found at Home Goods!
I can’t get over how inexpensive their bedding is.
Did you notice the pretty scalloped edge?
We kept our white ruffled shams and layered them with the new blue and white shams and two throw pillows that came with the set!
This gorgeous pillow cover was on clearance at Hobby Lobby and only cost $4.00.
The throw blanket was a clearance purchase from Walmart and only cost $5.00!
Budget Tip: Look for clearance sales or outlet stores for high-quality bedding at lower prices.
4) Dress up your television
Our TV looked out of place on our gorgeous new walls, so we decided to give it a mini makeover!
First, Rich made a frame with leftover wood trim and painted it the same color as the walls.
Then, we chose pretty fall artwork to make it look like a painting!
Now it blends beautifully into the room’s design.
Budget Tip: DIY a picture frame to surround the TV instead of buying an expensive one.
5) Paint a piece of furniture
Another budget-friendly way to makeover a bedroom is to give old furniture new life with a fresh coat of paint.
Last year, Rich’s sister brought us several pieces of antique furniture from their parent’s house.
One of the tables was the perfect size for the sitting area in our bedroom, but the top was in rough shape.
Nothing a bit of chalk paint and rub-n-buff can’t handle!
We transformed the table with the same paint we used for our upholstered headboard, Annie Sloan in Old Ochre.
It looks like a brand-new table!
Budget Tip: Paint old furniture and use leftover paint from other projects to save on costs.
6) Transform hardware for a new look
Here’s a perfect example of how a small change can make a big difference!
Simply painting the hardware on furniture can refresh the space.
The whole look of this table was elevated by using Rub-n-Buff in Antique Gold on the hardware!
We liked it so much that we did the same to our nightstands!
Budget Tip: Incorporating DIY techniques like spray painting, chalk painting, or using Rub-n-Buff on existing hardware is a super budget-friendly option.
7) Accessorize with thrifted finds
Decorate a bedroom for less using thrifted decor.
If you see an item you like, that does not match, consider painting it!
We found the two tall finial statues at a yard sale.
They had been painted teal and gray but I transformed them with white paint and antique wax!
The decorative cage also came from the thrift store and was originally black.
I transformed it with white spray paint and filled it with velvet pumpkins for fall!
These pretty milk glass bowls were purchased at the Renninger’s Antique and Collectors Extravaganza.
This large flower vase came from a local thrift store and the color was peach.
I primed it with spray primer, added texture with spackle, and painted it with three colors of acrylic craft paint to make it look like pottery!
Budget Tip: Mix thrifted and new items for an inexpensive and unique bedroom style.
In Conclusion
A bedroom makeover doesn’t have to be expensive to make a big impact.
By incorporating these seven budget-friendly ideas, you can easily transform your space into a fresh, inviting retreat without breaking the bank.
The key is to get creative, embrace what you already have, be willing to do DIY projects, and find affordable ways to personalize your space.
So, pick a project, start small, and watch your bedroom come to life with a whole new look.

LOVE it, Donna! It’s so gorgeous. The trim on the walls paired with the moody paint color makes it looks super high-end and expensive. It’s amazing what a few DIY’s, some paint, and thrifted decor can do, isn’t it?!
