Instead of planting them with flowers or herbs, I decided to make topiaries for them!
At first, I planned to make moss ball topiaries, but then I decided to go all out for Spring and create three different-shaped Easter egg topiaries!
I’m so happy with how they turned out!
Let me show you how I made them!
Steps to make an Easter Egg Topiary
Gather Supplies
Gather the following items to complete this project:
- Container- Walmart 6-inch pot
- Faux eggs- Walmart speckled eggs 15 count
- Dowel rods- or sticks
- Paint-FolkArt Paint in Coffee Bean
- Paintbrush- Acrylic Set
- Styrofoam- various size balls, a cone, and bases
- Hot glue gun- Surebonder Dual Temp
- Glue sticks
- Silicone finger protectors
- Moss- bag of Spanish moss
- Scissors
- Paint for eggs- optional- Annie Sloan Louis Blue
- Brown Sharpie marker- optional
- Ribbon- optional- from the egg box
Paint
I was excited to find eggs at Walmart that matched my pots!
I thought it would be nice to have some blue eggs, so I painted the brown eggs the same color as the blue pot.
Paint eggs
Painting the eggs is optional, so feel free to skip this step!
After the blue paint dried, I added speckles with a brown Sharpie marker.
Paint dowel rods
Give the dowel rods one coat of brown paint and let them dry!
*Tip- Use a piece of styrofoam to keep the dowel rods upright!
Prepare topiaries
Now, it’s time to grab your styrofoam pieces.
Put styrofoam into each pot and stuff the sides with packing paper to keep them from moving.
Add the balls and cone to the dowel rods.
Divide the eggs into small, medium, and large sizes.
Hot Glue Eggs
Hot glue the eggs to the topiary!
I put the large eggs on the cone, the medium eggs on the single ball, and the small eggs on the double ball topiary.
This is a simple step, but it takes time to hold the egg until the glue dries.
Always use caution while using a glue gun because it can cause burns.
We suggest using silicone finger protectors!
Hot Glue Moss
Work in small sections and apply hot glue to the styrofoam.
Then press a piece of moss into the hot glue!
The silicone finger protectors make this part so easy!
When you finish, it will look a bit crazy and have lots of pieces of moss poking out.
Grab your scissors and give the topiary a haircut!
Here’s where my 35 years of hairdressing experience came in handy, lol!
*Note- Moss is very messy, so have your vacuum cleaner ready!!
Add your topiaries to the pots!
Finish them by putting a layer of moss over the top of the pot.
Oh yes, I almost forgot!
I added one last finishing touch!
I ironed the ribbons from the plastic egg boxes and made a bow for each topiary!
Now they’re perfection!
In Conclusion
Are you feeling inspired to decorate for Spring or Easter?
I think everyone should have at least one Easter egg topiary to celebrate the season!

My goodness Donna, these are adorable! I love the idea of using a sharpie marker instead of a toothbrush and paint, it makes a big ole’ mess everywhere. I love that you always share such wonderful tips. These topiaries I am sure would be expensive if purchased completed, yours look so high end! I am sending this post over to my mother who would thoroughly enjoy this project. I can see these on either end of a mantel. Hope you enjoy the rest of your week!
Donna Allen says
Hi Cara! You are right about using the toothbrush technique, it works, but is super messy! The Sharpie worked great! I’m glad you like my topiaries and are sharing them with your mom! Let me know if she makes some for her Spring decor!! Thanks so much and have a blessed day!
