Steps to organize a nightstand
Here are three easy steps to help you organize your nightstand!
Purge
Step one- Clean out the nightstand.
- Remove everything from the nightstand.
- Throw away empty or expired items.
- Donate items that are in good shape but that you no longer use.
Place
Step two- Sort the items you want to keep and place them into similar categories on your bed.
Here is a list of items commonly stored inside a nightstand:
Electronics
- remote controls
- phone
- tablet
- headphones
- charging cords
Reading/writing materials
- eyeglasses
- Bible
- books
- magazines
- journal/diary
- pen/pencil
- reading light
Personal hygiene
- tissues
- medications/vitamins
- lip balm
- lotions
- essential oils
Personalize
Decide how you will separate and contain items inside your drawer.
I’m using a drawer organizer set I purchased at Walmart.
Be sure to measure your drawers before purchasing new storage items.
Choose organizers that fit inside your drawers and will hold the size items you have.
Let me show you how I organized my nightstand.
Nightstand Drawer Organization Ideas
Here is the top drawer of my nightstand.
The drawer dividers do a fabulous job of holding each item in its place.
Now, look at the middle drawer and notice it is much deeper than the top one!
A box of tissues fits perfectly inside, so I don’t have to store them on the nightstand.
I made a fabulous discovery when I was cleaning my jewelry holder.
It fits perfectly on the wood trim of the drawer and can be pushed side to side to allow storage underneath it!
How handy is that??
I only wish I would have discovered it earlier!
And finally, the bottom drawer.
I don’t wear sweatshirts very often in Florida, so I don’t want them taking up space in my closet.
The bottom drawer is the perfect spot for them!
I like to use the file folding method to see every shirt in the drawer!
How to handle cord Clutter
Do you have cords sticking out around your nightstand?
Visual clutter gets on my nerves, so Rich thought of a great idea to tidy up the electrical cords.
Drill a hole in the back of your dresser and attach two USB ports inside the drawer.
Now, the phone and tablet can charge inside the drawer.
No more unsightly cords between the bed and nightstand!
Organization Ideas for the Top of Your Nightstand
Many people like to use decorative items on their nightstands.
That is fine as long as the top does not get cluttered.
Here are some items you typically see on top of a nightstand:
- lamp
- clock
- dish or small tray to hold jewelry or glasses
- coaster for glass
- book
- photo
- floral arrangement
Best tips if you have a small nightstand
We are fortunate to have large nightstands, but if that is not the case for you, here are some tips that can help!
- Use a floor lamp or wall sconce to free up space on top of your nightstand.
- Remove your alarm clock and use your phone instead.
- Don’t use a tissue box instead, opt for a travel-size tissue pack.
- Consider purchasing a hanging caddy to store items on the side of your bed.
Whether you have a large nightstand or a small one, we hope our organization ideas have been helpful to you!

Sometimes I feel like your titles are written specifically for me Donna! I cleaned off my nightstand this past weekend since it does get cluttered, and quickly. I am not a fan of the cords everywhere, and you guessed it, we have plenty between the nightstand and bed. It’s like you are speaking my language! Hope you are doing well, and I loved this post, so handy.
