If you have been following us for a while, you know we love to do DIY projects!
Many projects require work in our garage, and it can get messy fast!
If we put things back where they belong in the garage, they would stay organized.
For some reason, we tend to leave items on the workbench or tucked into a corner!
We’re always ready and excited to tidy things up in the Spring!
Here are nine ways we store items in our garage!
9 Garage storage solutions
1) Invest in shelving
The easiest and cheapest way to store items in a garage is with shelves.
Shelves allow you to take advantage of the vertical space around the edges of the garage.
2) Use tubs to contain items
Open shelving is functional but can look very messy.
We suggest containing similar items inside plastic storage tubs.
3) Purchase Labels for the Tubs
Some people like to use clear bins to see what’s inside.
If you choose to use solid-colored containers, we recommend labeling each one.
We love these self-adhesive card pockets. If we need to switch what’s in the tub, we simply remove the white card and make a new label!
4) ADD OVERHEAD STORAGE
Each year we try to add one new storage solution to an area!
This year, we purchased overhead storage for our holiday decor.
Learn how to install overhead storage racks here!
5) Create storage on the wall
Another great way to use vertical space is to add a wall storage system!
These allow you to add hooks, shelves, and even cabinets!
Check out the Flow Wall System we chose here!
6) Hang items on hooks
Keep ladders off the floor by hanging them on wall hooks.
7) Store tools in a portable workbench
This is one of the best purchases we have ever made!
It’s perfect for working on DIY projects and it has tons of storage space for tools!
8) Store screws and nails in a wall-mount bin organizer
This is such a handy tool!
Now when I need Rich to hang a picture, he knows exactly where to find the right size hardware he needs for the job!!
9) Set up a battery charging station
If you have as many battery-operated tools as we have, you need to set up an organized space to plug in each charger!
I hope some of our garage storage solutions will work for you!
Before and after pics of Spring Garage organization
I wish I could tell you that our garage looks like those pictures year-round, but the truth is we get pretty messy!
Over the winter, things seem to pile up and get covered in sawdust!
It’s such a relief to get it clean and looking good again!
Here are our before and after pictures for your viewing pleasure, lol!
Remember how I told you we don’t always clean up after a project!!
Why is it that flat spaces always attract clutter?
The lawnmower and powerwasher sit dormant during winter and inevitably something ends up on top of them!
Here’s one of my DIY projects that never came to fulfillment!
I planned to take a tree branch and make a faux tree with it!
Just so you know, I did remove all the dead leaves and saved the branch.
Maybe I’ll get around to it in the Fall!
These shelves weren’t too bad, they mainly needed to be vacuumed!
Well, that’s a wrap on our garage organization!

The wall-mount bin system used in your garage does not seem to be the same size as the one shown in the resources. Did you combine multiple bins or is there a larger version? Thank you.
Donna Allen says
Hi Betty! We have the same kit that’s linked at the bottom of the post. Ours looks different because we configured it differently on our wall. There are twelve panels and we put four down and three across. The linked picture has three down in first section, six down in second section, and three down in third section. Let us know if you have any other questions! Thanks!

I need all of your tips and tricks Donna, our garage is a mess! Someone around here keeps finding spots to put more things, but I am really not sure how he does it! My car barely fits! LOL
Donna Allen says
Hey Cara! Houses in FL don’t have basements and it’s too hot to put stuff in attics, so lots of people can’t fit there cars in the garage because they use it as storage! I hope our tips can help you get yours under control! Good luck!
Cara says
Thank you Donna! Yes, I would be lost without our basement. My friend lives in North Carolina and they do not have basements either, do you have clay soil as she does too? We have a few areas here in Ohio where the soil is clay and it is very difficult to dig in when underground electric lines are ran. Thank you for sharing your tips and ideas!
Donna Allen says
We miss our basement so much but it’s made us get creative with our storage here in FL. Being able to store items we use seasonally in overhead bins is going to help tremendously!

Hi Anna! So glad you enjoyed the post! Garages and basements can be very difficult areas to organize because that’s where most people dump all of their stuff, lol! I bet a lot of our garage storage solutions would work well in your basement too! Good luck!
