Have you ever bought a home decor item, used it for a while, and then tired of it? Me too, so, I’m going to repurpose a wood welcome sign into a beautiful piece of wall art!
This cute sign has worn out its welcome and I’ve discovered a place I would rather use it inside my house!

I enjoyed using the sign on my back porch.
Then, one day I realized it was the perfect length to hang over a table in my living room!
I adore this picture of white flowers, but it screams Spring and I’d like to change things up for the summer, but I’m having no luck finding affordable art that I like!
So, I will take matters into my own hands and make a piece of art with my welcome sign!
Ready to see what I came up with??
Here ya go!
Remember the flowers I made out of lunch bags last week??
This is what I made them for!
I think it’s a fun and unique piece of art!
What do you think?
Do you like the new look?
Want to see how I achieved it??
Here are all the details!
Gather
Gather the following items for this project:
- A sign or piece of wood
- Screwdriver
- Picture hangers
- Hand sander and sandpaper
- Paint-I used Waverly White Chalk Paint
- Paintbrush
- Square dowels-1/4″ X 36″- I used 10
- Miter box and saw
- Half Wood Beads – 12mm 400 pieces
- Gorilla wood glue
- Clamps
- Paper lunch bags
- Scissors
- Twine
steps to repurpose a wood sign
Prep
1) Sand- use a hand sander to remove the letters and most of the stain from the sign.
2) Clean the sign to remove the dust
3) Address the hardware
The sign only has the hardware to hang it vertically. I want it to hang horizontally so we will add new hardware to the back. Can you see the gold picture hanger we attached to the top of the board?
4) Protect your work surface- I used paper to protect my floor.
5) Elevate the sign
paint
The sign is going to be hanging over a white-washed table.
I’ll apply the same type of paint treatment for the sign.
Mix equal parts of water and paint.
Paint the top and sides of the wood sign!
Use a damp paper towel to remove excess paint.
Let dry and repeat the steps if you want more coverage.
I did one more coat of paint!
The color turned out great, but I think the board looks too plain!
It needs a little something extra!
I was looking at wood pieces in Hobby Lobby and spotted this.
It’s so cute and inspired me to add a wood bead frame around my sign!
Add a wood bead frame
After ordering wood beads from Amazon and a quick trip to Home Depot for some wood dowels, I was ready to make a frame.
Oops, I mean, we were ready to make a frame!
I don’t trust my measuring skills, so I delegated that job to Rich!
He was having so much fun that he didn’t stop there.
He cut the dowels with this mini miter box and saw!
And I sanded the rough edges off!
Then, he offered to glue the dowels for me!
Next, he used clamps to hold the wood down until the glue dried!
The next day I glued each of those little beads to the board!
Before I glued them, I placed the beads around the frame to see if they fit.
Some beads are more oval than round, and you can move them around to make them fit the space you need!!
That night, Rich added the second row of dowels.
Doesn’t it look amazing!
paint the frame
The frame looks nice as it is. However, I want it to blend with the board. So I will paint (whitewash) it.
I mixed equal parts paint and water and painted the frame. I also added another coat to the sides of the wood board because it still looked so dark!
You can see the difference in the picture above!
make paper flowers
I wrote a separate post showing how to make these adorable paper flowers from lunch bags. You can see it here!
They are so pretty, and you can use them around the house in many different ways! So be sure to check out that post!
adhere flowers to the sign
I used Zots glue dots to adhere my flowers to the sign.
