Here’s what we’ll be organizing this Summer!
ORGANIZE BY THE SEASON
To make organizing our home easier, we tackle a different zone each season of the year!
Here are the zones of our home:
- Personal Living Zone (Summer): These rooms are personal to each individual who lives in our home: master bedroom, additional bedrooms, closets (bedroom, linen, cleaning), master bathroom, and additional bathrooms.
- Entertaining Zone (Fall): The main rooms a guest would frequent when coming to our home: entryway, living room, dining room, family/playroom, and guest bedroom and bathroom.
- Working Zone (Winter): We regularly work in the office, kitchen, and laundry rooms. The kitchen is a big job, so we separate it from the pantry. We do the same in my office by organizing the paper clutter and craft supplies on different days.
- Outdoor Zone (Spring): All outdoor spaces of our home: garage (shed), porch (patio, deck), attic (unfinished basement), cars (camper, boat), and yard.
Now that you know how our seasonal challenges work, let’s discuss what’s happening this summer!
THE Summer HOME ORGANIZATION CHALLENGE
During summer, we love spending time at theme parks and the beach but when it gets too hot outside, we move inside and start organizing!
Here are the goals we are setting for ourselves this season!
You can set the same goals or choose your own!
Organization Goals
We have several places where our organization systems need to be tweaked!
Here are some before shots for you!
Under the Bathroom Sink
We kept a trash can in this cabinet when we had our dogs.
After they passed, we moved the trash can out and a mess crept in!
We’ll re-organize both cabinets under the sinks in our primary bathroom.
Make-up
I’ve been storing my make-up in clear organizers which works wonderfully, but I want to switch to a drawer.
So I’m hunting for an organizer to fit my skinny bathroom drawer.
The Primary Closet
Somehow the open spaces under our clothes have become filled with items I wanted to sell but never got around to doing it.
Now they need to be packed up and donated!
DIY Home Improvement
Each season, we try to do at least one home improvement project to turn our builder-grade home into a house we love!
This summer, we have several projects we want to tackle.
Add trim to mirrors in the primary bath.
An inexpensive way to dress up a builder-grade mirror is to add a frame around it!
Add crown and picture frame molding to the primary bedroom and paint it a new color.
We want to add some interest to our bedroom with a new paint color and wood trim!
So we’ll be saying goodbye to the gray walls!
I would love to rip out the carpet but that will have to wait!
Paint the brown cabinet in our guest bathroom.
When we moved into this house all the bathrooms had these brown/orange cabinets.
I do not like the color and planned to paint all of them immediately, but four years later we still have three that need painting!
This summer the guest bathroom will get a cabinet makeover with paint!
DID WE MEET OUR GOALS FOR THE PAST CHALLENGE?
In a perfect world, we would meet every goal we set but that’s just not the reality at our house!
Stuff happens and sometimes we spend all day at Disney or binge-watch TV on the weekend instead of working on a project!
Sometimes, I procrastinate because I don’t feel confident enough to start a project (hello sewing machine).
With that in mind, here’s how we did with our Spring goals!
ORGANIZATION GOALS WE MET
Here’s a list of the home organization goals we accomplished during Spring!
- We battled the crazy spring pollen and organized the potting bench!
- We’re ready for a road trip in July since we organized our cars with useful accessories!
- Most Saturday mornings during spring were spent sprucing up the yard to add curb appeal to our home!
- We have a bad habit of leaving items lying around our garage after DIY projects, so we spent time cleaning up and putting things back where they belonged. We did not change our organization systems so no need to write a new post. Here is last year’s garage organization post, if you’d like to see it! Maybe we’ll do better putting things back this year!!
DIY HOME IMPROVEMENT GOALS We Met
- Sealed the brick pavers on the front porch, sidewalk, and driveway
- Cleaned and painted the white wicker furniture on the lanai.
DIY GOALS WE DID NOT MEEt
- Recover outdoor cushions- I bought the outdoor material to recover our cushions but never started sewing. It’s too hot on the lanai during summer, so I am not motivated to do the job, lol! We love spending time out there the rest of the year so I need to get to work!
- Seal brick pavers on the lanai- The suggested temperature to apply sealer is between 45 and 85 degrees. When we got ready to seal the lanai, temperatures were in the ’90s so we decided to put this area off.
- Paint the front door- Here’s another project I put off because of the heat. I will add it back to my goals for Fall!
