Crafting is a wonderful hobby, however, it often comes with a big downside: the mess that accumulates in your house. If you spend more time searching for supplies than crafting, it’s time to get organized. Join us for our best craft room organization ideas!
I love crafting, but every year I accumulate more craft supplies!

My office isn’t getting any bigger, so I must devise more creative ways to store those supplies!
Can you relate?
Do you ever let your office or craft room get into this shape?
I have a bad habit of piling things in corners, lol!
I must rearrange things in my office to get my craft supplies off the floor!
Here are four DIYs we did to solve the storage problems in my office/craft room.
DIY Storage Solutions For a Craft Room
Hang Wrapping Paper
I decided to hang my wrapping paper on the wall a few years ago!
It looked fabulous but was not very functional.
We used ribbon to hold the dowel rods and it was hard to put the dowel back inside the slot when I needed to use a roll of paper.
So, we came up with a better way to hold the dowels!
We used a leftover chain from installing light fixtures and spray-painted it black!
Now I can easily take a roll of wrapping paper on and off the dowel rod!
It functions so much better now!
Display Ribbon
I was storing yarn and ribbon in this cube and had to dig through it to find what I needed.
I knew it would be easier to display the ribbon, similar to the wrapping paper.
Enter the whiteboard in my office that I never use anymore to write on!
We decided to attach hooks and dowel rods to the frame!
I love this but we should have used thicker dowel rods because they’re drooping in the center.
These are 3/8″ diameter dowels, so get thicker ones than that!
We cut the dowels the same width as the mirror, and I wish they were about 1/2 inch longer (since they’re drooping, lol).
Install an over-the-door hanger holder
Now let’s get the wreaths and forms off of the floor!
We used an over-the-door hanger holder and placed it inside our storage closet.
Then, I placed each wreath/form over a hanger and hung them from the holder!
It’s working perfectly!
Use Glass Jars For Storage
I have a couple of drawers filled with wood decor items and beads.
The drawers have gotten so full, I have to dig around to find what I need.
As before, I wanted to discover a way to display them to see what I have on hand.
Fortunately, I have a box of mason jars that I used for our sons’s three Eagle Scout Ceremonies!
I pulled out the box, along with three cashew jars, that I was saving, and got to work!
I removed the labels and the expiration date from the cashew jars with Goo Gone and thoroughly washed them.
They turned out great!
Then, I removed the burlap from the mason jars, only to discover sticker numbers I had put on them for our Derby parties.
More Goo Gone and a good wash, and the mason jars were ready to fill!
I love how the wood items look inside the glass jars!
I only wish I would have thought to do this sooner!
Now let’s discuss what types of furniture work well to store craft items!
Furniture Storage Solutions for a Craft Room
Every year I invest in at least one new storage solution in the room I’m working on!
I purchased this amazing rolling cart to keep items I often use in my office.
Rolling Cart
Now when I need my glue gun I can plug it in, and go!
No more searching through drawers for it, the glue sticks, and my finger protectors!
Bookshelves
Bookshelves are a must-have storage item because they use the vertical space in your room!
Storage cubes
Cube storage units are inexpensive and you can add leather or fabric cubes like I did here.
You must check out this post about how to paint a laminate cabinet to see what it looked like before I painted it white!
Desk
We have a large desk with adequate storage for our office supply needs.

Flat work surface
Every crafter needs a flat space to work at!
See how we made this craft desk from my Grandmother’s piano!

If you have fabric, here’s a great way to store it so you know exactly what you have on hand!
A Strategy to Organize Your Craft Room/Office
If you need more craft room organization help, try the 6/P strategy, it makes organizing any space very simple.
Do the following six steps starting with the letter P and your craft room/office will be organized in record time!
PREPARE
Grab the following items: a trash bag, a cardboard box, and 2 laundry hampers.
PURGE
Remove everything from your space and sort all items into one of these categories.
- Trash-throw all unnecessary paper and garbage in the trash bag
- Donate-put items you would like to donate into the cardboard box
- Relocate-any items that don’t belong in this space should go into laundry hamper #1
- Replace- items that need to stay in the office should be placed in laundry hamper #2. Put like items together.
POLISH
Now that the space is empty it’s time to deep clean!
PERSONALIZE
During this step, you need to determine the following:
- What is causing clutter in your space?
- What items do you need to make or purchase to contain items?
PLACE
- Now it’s time to place items back in the room in an organized manner.
- Discard the trash bag you filled up!
- If you have items to donate, don’t wait around, take them to the donation center soon!
- If you have items that belong in another room, deliver them now.
- Replace items that belong in the room, putting them back in an organized manner!
PUT BACK
To keep your craft supplies organized, you must put things back where they belong!
If you can develop that habit, your craft room/office will stay clutter-free and you’ll be more productive than ever!

Oh my Donna, I am in love with all of your organization hacks! Now can you come up to Ohio and do the same here for me? teehee… your “mess” would be a clean craft room for me. I have things everywhere. You are right, crafting does pose problems in our homes, the stuff ends up everywhere. I hope this summer I will get it all together. I will be trying to implement some of your ideas downstairs.

Hi Cara! Wouldn’t it be great if we lived close, I could help you organize, and then we could go thrift shopping together! If I still lived in KY that might be a possibility! Anyway, thanks for your wonderful compliment and good luck organizing your craft supplies!
