This year, we broke our yard down into sections and focused on a different one each weekend! Doing so took the overwhelm of dealing with the entire yard in one or two days away!
Try it, you might enjoy yard work a lot more when you can get out of bed pain-free the next day!
Why you need to clean up your yard in the spring
A beautiful, healthy lawn does not happen by itself!
Ongoing maintenance is needed to keep your grass, trees, shrubs, and flowers looking good and thriving!
Whether you were forced to neglect your yard during the cold Winter, or you live in a warm climate and were lazy, like us, your yard needs some help!
Why, because leaves and debris accumulate. Storms can leave broken branches, sticks, and trash in the yard. And harsh weather can cause plants or grass to die.
Sure, you can pay someone to do it for you, but why spend your hard-earned money when you can do it yourself?
Here’s how!
Six Steps to clean up your yard
1) Remove debris from the lawn
Walk around your yard and pick up any debris laying about!
Spring brought drought to our area of Florida this year and we were left with several areas of dead grass.
We had to dethatch, a fancy word for rake up, the dead grass.
2) Shape the Shrubs and Perennials
Shrubs
Trim and shape your shrubs.
Our shrubs grew so much, they were in need of a good shaping!
Wait to trim blooming shrubs until they are done flowering.
*TIP- put plastic on the ground to cover your mulch before you trim. When you’re done, roll up the plastic and empty it in a garbage bag.
Perennials
Clean up your perennial plants and divide them when appropriate.
The only perennial plants we have are liriope.
We removed the dead pieces and trimmed the ends.
3) Remove weeds and unwanted plants
Remove weeds from your flower and plant beds.
We did not do any weeding over the Winter, so grass crept into this area under the tree.
The ornamental grasses that were planted around the tree are a bit overwhelming, so we decided to remove them!
We can’t get over how much bigger our front yard looks without the grasses! Big improvement!
4) Trim your Trees
Trim your trees to keep the shape under control.
Remove any dead or damaged branches.
You can’t tell from this angle, but the tree was growing in a very odd shape.
It looks so much better now!
5) Edge for a professional look
Edge around flower and plant beds to give them a streamlined and clean look!
6) Mulch plant and flower beds
Are you wondering why you should spend money on mulch?
There are three good reasons!
- Mulch helps the ground retain moisture which is great for your plants!
- Mulch helps reduce weeds so you won’t have to work harder to keep beds looking fabulous!
- Mulch insulates the ground around your plants and protects them from rapid temperature shifts.
Not only is mulch good for your plants, but it also makes your beds visually more appealing!
I love the way the new mulch looks!

Great tips! We cleaned out yard in March, and am now patiently waiting for things to start growing.
Donna Allen says
Doesn’t it feel good to have the yard spruced up and ready for new growth? It’s such a beautiful time of year!
CoCo says
It’s amazing what a little cleanup can do Donna! I know it was probably a lot of extra work but everything looks so good. We definitely need to reshape some of our trees. Especially, the ones that got damaged last hurricane season. They just never recovered like we thought they would now is the perfect time to take care of them before it gets too hot though. Hugs and thanks for all these great tips, CoCo
Donna Allen says
Yes my friend, get out there now before the summer heat kicks in!! One of our trees was leaning after the hurricane, but we were fortunate not to have any damage! Good luck getting yours spruced up! Hugs, Donna

Great tips Donna! We think it got too cold this past winter for our boxwoods and they do not look like they will make it. Darn it, I like them. I never thought of mulch as an insulator, thank you for that. Your hard work paid off, it looks great!
Donna Allen says
Sorry to hear that about your boxwoods! Good luck working in your yard! I love how a Spring yard clean up looks once it’s done!
