6/P Strategy to Organize Your Laundry Room
I have six steps that I always use to organize a room. The steps are Prep, Purge, Polish, Personalize, Place and Put back. Keep reading and I’ll explain each one!
PREP
Collect the following items: Trash bag, cardboard box, and 2 laundry hampers.
PURGE
Remove all items from the laundry room.
- Trash – Throw away any items you no longer use.
- Donate – Put items that are in good condition, but you have no use for, into the cardboard box.
- Relocate – Place any items that don’t belong in the room into laundry hamper #1.
- Replace – Put items that need to stay in the room in Laundry hamper #2. Arrange “like” items into categories. Here are a few categories of items you may have in your laundry room. Laundry supplies, cleaning supplies, paper and plastic supplies, pet supplies, first aid supplies.
POLISH
Now that the laundry room is empty, you can clean using a top-down approach.
Don’t forget to clean your washer and dryer on the inside and the outside.
PERSONALIZE
It’s time to personalize the area, start by asking yourself the following questions:
- How does this space need to function for my personal needs? Do I have to use the room for anything besides laundry?
- What is causing clutter in this space?
- Have I removed all nonessential items from the room, so it can function productively?
- What items do I need to make or purchase to contain items in this space?
- How can I beautify the space, so I enjoy spending time there?
PLACE
Time to put things back in an organized manner!
- Trash – Place the trash bag in your garbage can
- Donate – Take the donation box to your favorite donation center
- Relocate – Place items in laundry hamper #1 into the room they belong in
- Replace – Place items in laundry hamper #2 back in the laundry room
PUT BACK
This is such an important part of keeping your home organized! You must learn to put things back in the laundry room where they belong, or you’ll end up back at square one!!

Welcome to my laundry room
Hi friends! Come on in and take a look at my laundry room.
It’s a long skinny room that has a door that opens to our garage.
I just added this amazing rug to help cut down on the dirt that gets tracked into the house.
My laundry room gets used for three different purposes, so I set up three different zones!
Laundry zone
First and foremost, I do laundry in this space! It’s so cute, I love spending time in here!
Drop zone
Second, it serves as a drop zone for entering and exiting the house through the garage.

pet zone
Third, we keep the majority of our pet supplies in this space!
I have an entire post about how to organize pet supplies here.
PRACTICAL LAUNDRY ROOM ORGANIZATION IDEAS
I have some great ideas to help you organize and spruce up this space!
Get ready to be inspired!
store laundry supplies near washer and dryer
I am so glad we purchased the pedestals for the washer and dryer!
They seemed like a splurge at the time, because they’re a bit pricey, but my back says they were worth it!!
Plus, they provide wonderful storage for most of my laundry supplies!
Under the washer, I keep color-catching sheets, Tide Pods, fabric softener, Tide to Go pens, stain remover, Oxy clean, and my back stock of laundry detergent.
Under the dryer, I keep dryer sheets, my dryer vent cleaner, a spray bottle, my iron, and a small container of water, and funnel, I use to fill the iron.
ADD A VIGNETTE FOR ITEMS USED ON A DAILY BASIS
It’s important to place items you use on a daily, or regular basis, within arms reach!
I incorporate my most used items in vignettes on top of the washer and dryer! They look nice, and can be easily moved when I need to access the bins behind them!
The tray on the washer holds baskets for clean and dirty masks!
I can not believe we still have to use these! Who would have believed it??
Anyway, I also keep the detergent I use most of the time on the tray!
And I threw in a couple of plants for some green pops of color!
On the dryer, I have a tray that holds these two adorable canisters that store dog treats!
And another cute little plant!
Incorporate storage cubes
Cloth storage cubes are an inexpensive and decorative way to store all kinds of household items!
They come in lots of different colors and designs!
Four of them fit perfectly across the top of my washer and dryer!
In three of the cloth bins, I keep my back stock of paper supplies. One bin each of toilet paper, paper towels, and tissues.
In the fourth bin, I store plastic trash bags of different sizes and clear bags for storage.
Add a shelf
Some day I’m going to add cabinets to my laundry room!
Until that day comes, a budget-friendly way to gain storage is to add a shelf (or shelves) above the washer and dryer!
Putting a shelf (or cabinets) over your washer and dryer will allow for vertical storage!
The shelf can hold more storage cubes or be purely decorative!
I have these amazing wire baskets sitting on my shelf! They are great for storage but look like decor as well! That takes me to my next tip!
USE DECORATIVE ITEMS THAT ARE FUNCTIONAL
Store laundry items in pretty glass containers!
I used a medium-size cookie jar to hold clothespins.
A large cookie jar stores my dryer balls, and a small mason jar holds the tip money I receive while doing laundry!
Create a place to hang clothes
Since I currently have this open space, I’m using a rolling garment rack to hang dry my delicate clothes. My laundry baskets fit on it perfectly.
I needed a place to hang wet pool towels, so we made this personalized rack!
Find wall art that is functional
Use wall art that looks great but serves a purpose.
The sign tells me what the laundry symbols mean. Nice to have since I can’t seem to remember, what each little dot stands for, lol!
The cute birdcage holds missing socks until its mate can be found.
use A container to discard lint
I did a fun little DIY and made this lint bin holder! I attached it to the side of my dryer with two Command Clips. So handy, and looks cute too!
It feels so great to have this space organized and spruced up! I hope you can incorporate some of my practical laundry room organization ideas into your home!
