What If I Don’t Have a Cleaning Closet?
In our last house, we did not have a cleaning closet. So, we added a tall cabinet and shelves to our laundry room to store our cleaning supplies and tools.
If you don’t have a closet consider adding a cabinet somewhere in your house or the garage.
If you lack the space or the budget, to add a cabinet, look for wire shelves that hang on the back of a door or a plastic shoe organizer that can hang on the door of the laundry room or closet.
No large space, use a pantry or a kitchen/bathroom cabinet.
Use the 6/P Strategy
Do each of the following steps that start with the letter “P”: prepare, purge, polish, personalize, place, and put back.
Prepare
Locate the following items:
A trash bag, a box, and one laundry hamper.
PURGE
Remove all items from the closet. Place each item in one of the following categories:
- Trash-throw any trash or unwanted items in the trash bag
- Donate-place any items that you no longer use or are in great shape in the cardboard box to be donated.
- Relocate-place items that don’t belong in the closet in the laundry hamper.
- Replace-place any items that need to stay in the closet on a table. Arrange like items together.
POLISH
Clean the closet from top to bottom!
PERSONALIZE
It’s time to decide how you will organize the closet based on your personal needs. I have provided a printable to help you figure this out.
1)Decide where each category of items will be placed in the closet.
2)Do you need to make or purchase containers to store items?
PLACE
Now it’s time to place all of your items back in the closet!
- Trash-discard the trash in your garbage can.
- Donate-don’t procrastinate, take items to your local donation center right away!
- Relocate-take the laundry hamper and deliver items to the room they belong.
- Replace-place every item in the spot you found for it.
PUT BACK
Remember, if you don’t put each item back in its appropriate place after each use, you will end up with a cluttered mess again!!

Tips to organize a cleaning closet
Here are my best tips to organize cleaning supplies in a closet!
Incorporate plastic drawers
Use plastic drawers to hold microfiber cleaning clothes and sponges.
They also work great to store small household items like Command hooks, glue, and furniture repair kits.
The only downside to drawers is the fact you need to sit something on top of them so they don’t tip!
Make a cleaning caddy
Use a bucket or plastic basket with handles to store your everyday cleaning supplies.
When it’s time to clean a room, simply pull out the basket and carry it to where you are cleaning.
No wasting time gathering your supplies.
When you’re finished, store it on a shelf in your cleaning closet.
Crates with wheels
I found these amazing wood crates on wheels to store items on the floor.
They easily roll out when I need to get something out of them.
Don’t forget about the vertical space
Use vertical wall space to hang brooms and mops.
Attach command hooks to the wall and hang them.
You can also use the back of the door to hang items.
Use fabric cubes
Fabric cubes are a cost-effective and attractive way to store items in a cleaning closet.
I’m currently using them to store my vacuum accessories and light bulbs.
I have two empty bins on the top shelf!
Have a container for backstock
This year I switched out a fabric cube for something sturdier!
I’m using this woven basket with a metal frame and adding a cardboard bottom.
This will work better for my heavy backstock supplies.
Separate different types of cleaning products
We have a separate bin for car cleaning items.
When it’s time to wash the car, I simply pull out the car wash container and everything I need is within reach!
Label bins you can’t see inside
If you like to use bins that are not clear, you will need to label them!
I love these white metal label holders and I made labels on my Cricut machine.
If you don’t like your handwriting, you can purchase labels or a label maker.
You can also use alphabet stickers.

I would LOVE to have a cleaning closet like this, Donna, this is AMAZING! I love all the different bins and containers you used and how they each serve a purpose too. The labels you chose are super easy to work with too which I love. I definitely need to figure out how to make this happen in our laundry room. Loving and pinning sweet friend, CoCo

Hi Donna! Oh my gosh. So many great tips. I love you noted that folks can use the vertical space in a closet to hang items. Also, I love that you put the crates on the bottom of the closet on casters. That makes it so much easier to pull the crate out and put it back in. Pinned!
Donna Allen says
Hey, Anna! I’m glad you enjoyed the post! Those crates with casters are one of my favorite storage solutions! So much easier to find what you need when you roll them out! Thanks so much! Blessings, Donna
