Steps to Make Bandana Pillows
Gather Materials
Gather the following materials to complete this DIY project:
- Dollar Tree Bandanas (red, white, and blue)- 1 set traditional and 1 set flag
- Pillow Inserts– 2
- Ruler or measuring tape
- Fabric Fuse– Peel-n-stick 5/8″ adhesive strips
- Scissors
- Ribbon– red, white, and blue
- Disappearing ink pen– optional
Prepare bandanas
I bought two sets of bandanas so I could make two pillow covers.
Lay out the bandanas and decide which two you want to pair together.
I used a traditional bandana on one side and a flag print on the other.
Iron the bandanas to remove the wrinkles!
*Note- Remember that these only cost $1.25 for two bandanas so don’t be surprised if they are different sizes or the print is not perfectly centered on it.
Just do your best to center the design when you make your pillow cover.
Measure your pillow insert
If you’ve been following the blog for a while, you know I’m trying to make or buy pillow covers instead of purchasing decorative throw pillows because covers are so much easier to store!
You can get tips on pillow organization here!
I have several sizes of pillow inserts I can use for this project!
I chose to use 18-inch inserts, so I will make my pillow covers 18 inches.
Measure your pillow insert to determine the size of your pillow cover.
I own an 18-inch lip edge ruler which made this project much easier, but it’s not necessary.
Measure your bandana to 18 inches and mark lines with a disappearing ink pen.
Hem the open End
First, we need to make a hem on the open end of the pillow cover.
I am using fusible tape to make my pillow covers no sew because I already have it in my sewing box.
This tape works great but if you don’t want to purchase it use a hot glue gun instead.
Determine which side of the bandana will be left open.
*Important note so you don’t make my mistake- I wish I had made the opening on the side or top of the flag print so you can see the ribbon ties!
Putting the opening on the bottom of the flag print was a mistake!
Anyway, here’s how to hem the bandanas!
Apply the fusible tape to the wrong side of the bandana and press it to the material with your fingers.
Did you notice how crooked the design is? Take that into consideration when you apply the tape!
Carefully remove the tape and fold the bottom of the bandana over the tape to create the hemmed end.
Repeat this step with the flag print bandana.
Create the Pillow Covers
To create the pillow cover, lay the flag print bandana on the desk right side up.
Measure 18 inches up from the hemmed end and place the fusible tape across the top of the bandana.
Measure 18 inches and place the fusible tape down each side of the bandana.
Next, lay the traditional bandana on top of the flag with the right sides touching each other.
Be sure the hemmed ends are together and the top bandana is centered over the bottom bandana!
Carefully remove the tape and press the top bandana to the bottom.
Repeat on the other two sides.
Attach the ribbons
Next, add ribbon to the hemmed end of the pillow cover so it can be tied closed!
Cut six pieces of ribbon 9 inches long.
Apply a piece of fusible tape to the end of the ribbon and adhere it to the hemmed end, in the center, at the 9-inch mark on the ruler.
Then adhere one to the 4-inch mark and one to the 14-inch mark.
Flip the cover over and adhere three more ribbons to the other side!
Turn the cover inside out so the right sides show and your pillow cover is done!
Add Inserts and Tie Bows
Stuff the insert inside the pillow cover and tie the ribbons into bows!
Isn’t that the cutest?

I love bandana material, and these pillows are perfect Donna! I keep saying I am going to learn to sew, maybe this year will be my year. Your tutorial is great, and I like to think even I may be able to pull them off. I created a room with plaid, bandanas, and stripes in my 20’s. I was all in, I even dyed my carpet red! Yeah, I know such a bold choice for this mostly neutral kind-of gal. Seems like it was just yesterday, and other days it seems like a lifetime ago. I love your pillows, and now you have inspired me to give them a try. You always have such wonderful ideas, especially for each and every holiday.
Donna Allen says
