It seems like I spend the majority of my time these days in my office!
Either writing a blog post or working on a craft.
I’m going, to be honest with you, this is the room that gets the messiest and most cluttered in our house!
I thought I had taken a picture of it right before Christmas when the mess was at its height, but I can’t find it.
I cleaned it up before our holiday guests arrived, but it did not stay that way!
Here’s what it looked like last week!
Sorry, it’s such a bad photo, but you get the picture!
I tend to pile items up in the corner when I don’t have a place to store them!
I’m so excited to reorganize the craft room and get the clutter under control!
Want to see what this side of the room looked like when I was done?
Here you go!
Tips to help you declutter craft supplies
I have got to remove clutter from my craft room, so it’s time to get serious about what I’m storing in the office!
Here are some tips that helped me get the job done!
Do I still enjoy doing a particular craft?
I used to scrapbook but since I started the blog, I have not touched my supplies!
They are taking up valuable space that could be utilized in a different way!
Are you holding on to craft supplies you no longer use??
Don’t feel guilty about it, donate them to someone who would enjoy them!
Can I use the supplies for a different craft?
Fortunately, many of the items I own for scrapbooking can be used to create home decor crafts.
So, I will be keeping the majority of them.
Can you use the craft supplies you own in a different way?
Donate or discard items you never use
Do you have craft items that you never use?
If they are in good shape, you should consider donating them. If not, discard them!
Don’t keep duplicate items
Another great way to save space in your craft room is to get rid of duplicate items.
I have two paper cutters and I only need one, so the other will be going into my donate box!
store craft supplies in similar categories
I discovered I had lots of wood beads and wood decor items in different places around the room.
I cleaned out two drawers and put the beads in one and the wood decor items in the other!
My Must-Have Craft Supplies
If you are a crafter, there are some basic craft supplies you will always keep on hand.
These will be different for everyone, based on the type of crafts or hobby you enjoy!
Here are some of my must-have craft supplies and how I organize them!
Glue
I put all of my craft items that glue or adhere stuff in one drawer and labeled it!
- Hot glue gun
- Hot glue sticks
- Elmers glue- bottle and stick
- Wood glue
- E-6000
- Spray adhesive
- Stencil adhesive
paint supplies
Before I was storing my paint brushes in glass pickle jars inside this fabric cube.
Unfortunately, they kept tipping over and I quickly outgrew them.
After I organized my pantry, I had several Oxo containers that I no longer needed there!
So I brought them into my office and they are the perfect size to fit inside the fabric cube!
These are the painting essentials I keep on hand:
- Paintbrushes
- Painters tape
- Paint openers
- Stir sticks
Paint
I was storing the spray paint in one of the fabric cubes and they were a bit heavy for that so I decided to put them in a plastic container in the closet where I store the rest of our paint.
I keep a nice collection of different kinds of paint:
- Wall
- Furniture
- Craft
- Spray
Sewing supplies
I store the majority of my sewing supplies on the bottom shelf in my office.
Last year I decided to display my fabric and I’m so glad I did.
It has worked great!
I keep a sewing box inside one of the desk drawers because it doesn’t match the decor on my shelves.
I’m weird that way, lol!!
- Fabric
- Sewing box
- Scrap material
- Sewing machine
Cutting
I don’t store all of my cutting tools together.
I keep my sewing scissor and rotary cutting blade in my sewing bag.
My Cricut sits on my file cabinet, and regular scissors are in my desk organizer!
- Scissors
- Cricut
- Cutting mat
- Rotary cutter
- Wire cutters
paper
I have a lot of cardstock from scrapbooking but that’s ok because I can use this in lots of home decor craft projects!
If you have a lot of paper, I highly recommend investing in a storage unit for it!
Ribbon/yarn
I store my yarn and ribbon in one of the fabric cubes.
The ribbon is divided between old photo boxes, to help them stand up so I can see what I have at a glance!
- Various sizes/types of ribbon
- Various sizes/types of yarn
wood items
- Wood beads
- Signs
- Wood decor
wrapping paper
Last year I made this wrapping paper holder for my office!
It looks great but the function isn’t the best, it’s hard to get the dowel rods back inside the ribbon.
One of these days I will fix that and when I do I’ll post a DIY!
How to organize craft supplies
You’ve seen my must-have craft supplies, now are you ready to organize yours?
Use the 6/P Strategy to organize your craft supplies!
Follow the six steps starting with the letter P, and you can get organized quickly!
PREPARE
Get the craft space ready to organize by grabbing four containers. I use a trash bag, a cardboard box, and two laundry hampers.
PURGE
Remove everything in the space except the furniture and sort all items into one of these categories.
- Trash-throw all unnecessary items in the trash bag
- Donate-put the items you would like to donate into the cardboard box
- Relocate-any items that don’t belong in the space should go into laundry hamper #1
- Replace- things that need to stay in the craft space should be placed in laundry hamper #2 (or on a table if you have a lot of stuff) Put items in similar categories.
POLISH
Now that everything has been removed from your craft space it’s time to clean! Remember to start at the highest point and work your way down!
PERSONALIZE
During this step you need to determine the following:
- How does the space need to function for your personal needs?
- What items do you need to make or purchase to contain items in this space?
PLACE
Now it’s time to place items back into the craft space in an organized manner.
- Discard the trash bag you filled up!
- If you have items to donate, don’t wait around, take them to the donation center soon!
- If you have items that belong in another room, deliver them now.
- Replace the items you removed from the space and put them back in an organized manner!
PUT BACK
To keep your new craft space organized, you must train yourself to put things back where they belong! If you can develop that habit, your craft space will stay clutter-free and you’ll enjoy doing crafts more than ever!
I’d love to hear what your must-have craft supplies are and how you organize them!

This looks fantastic, Donna! I love the way you have everything organized. I just bought that white piece with all the cubbies for my TINY closet and have been amazed at how much storage it offers. I love the way you have all your paintbrushes organized too. It’s super smart to put them in containers like that. I need to do that in our garage! Thanks for all the great ideas. I learn so much from you all the time! Hugs, CoCo

Yes, those white cubes are the best!! I’m excited about using the containers for my paintbrushes! It’s a better storage solution than using pickle jars!

Wow Donna, your craft room looks great! I really need to take some of your advice and get myself organized over here. I do not have a craft room but I have two closets that I use and it is horrible. Love how you have everything labeled so it is easy to find. Have a great week- Meagan
Donna Allen says
Having the drawers organized and labeled is a game changer! It was way overdue!!

Thank you for sharing all of your tips Donna. It’s funny when you think of crafting, you never think of the mess it can create unless you actually craft. Our dining room table was a landing spot for me and my crafts, but I had to stop it. Walking in our front door did not show a tidy home when I kept crafting in there! Thank you for sharing with us at Whimsy Home Wednesday too!

I’m hoping I do a better job of keeping my office clean this year since things are organized better! Only time will tell!! Have a great week!

Thank you for so many ideas! My husband has so many hobbies that I was thinking about how to organize it. You just gave me such good ideas that I think I am going shopping!
Donna Allen says
Glad to be of help! Good luck and hope you find some good organization solutions.

I saw a bunch of those white organizers with labeled handles at a consignment store today. I was tempted to get them but don’t think I have the space. I might rethink that!!
Donna Allen says
I wish I could find more, they are great for craft storage!

This is so timely. I’ve just started a massive organisation of my shed. It’s filled so much that it’s like Tetris. But one day at a time. Thanks for the inspiration. Definitely keen to recreate your wrapping paper space in some way.
Donna Allen says
Hi Rachel! Good luck with the shed! I used ribbon to hold the dowel rods on my wrapping paper holder and I don’t recommend doing that. It’s hard to get the dowels back inside the ribbon. It looks great, just not as functional as I would like!
