If you’ve been around a while you know how much I love to make wreaths!
Well, I’m getting spring fever and started thinking about a wreath for the front door!
I wanted to do something different!
Something that would stand out on my black front door!
Something that would look fabulous!
But, I don’t want it to cost much!
I wondered if that would even be possible?
So, I started to shop my house.
And guess what I found…
This little beauty!
The basket matches nothing in my house and I haven’t used it once since we moved!
Only one little problem!
It’s not made to hang on a door!
Oh well, I’ll figure out some way to rig it up!
Want to see how I did it?
Let’s get this DIY started!
Gather
Gather or purchase the following supplies to make this project:
- Basket
- Vacuum with brush attachment
- Hot glue gun
- Chalk paint-I used Annie Sloan in French Linen and Old White
- Paintbrush-regular and small
- Wax-I used Annie Sloan in Clear
- Wax brush-regular and small
- Wood tag-I purchased mine form Hobby Lobby
- Label- mine was free from Dreams Factory for the Graphic Fairy (linked below)
- Jute twine
- Scothch tape
- Safety pins-2
- Floral foam
- Faux flowers
- Wire cutters
Prep
My basket is not in the best shape so I need to do a little prep work before we get started!
If your basket is new or in great shape, you get to skip to the “paint basket” step!
clean basket
My basket is dirty because I haven’t used it in quite a while!
I used my vacuum with the brush attachment to get all of the dust out of the crevices!
Repair Basket
If your basket needs repairs take care of that now!
My basket had some frayed ends that were sticking out so I used my hot glue gun to adhere them to the basket. If you use a glue gun, proceed with caution and do not touch the hot glue!
Paint basket
If you like the color of your basket, there’s no need to paint it.
I am so excited to paint this one, it’s going to look completely different when I’m done!
Paint the bottom and outside of the basket. Paint one side of the handles. Let paint dry.
Turn the basket over and paint the inside and the opposite side of the handles.
After the paint dried, you could see the navy color coming through the handles. So, I decided to paint them with a second coat.
The basket did not need a second coat of paint. I simply dabbed paint on any areas that I previously missed.
Add white strips
To give the basket a little more interest, I decided to add white stripes!
I used Annie Aloan in Old White to paint white stripes where the navy stripes had been.
This brush was a perfect size!
Don’t you think the white stripes brighten up the look of the basket! It was well worth the little bit of time and patience it took to do this!
wax basket
The paint made the straps very stiff.
I’m hoping wax will soften them up!
I added Annie Sloan clear wax with a brush and applied it generously to both sides of the handle.
Next, I used an old t-shirt to wipe away the excess wax. I let it dry overnight and the next morning the strap felt so much better! That wax is amazing!
For the basket, use a large wax brush. Be sure to wipe the excess wax off the brush and onto a paper plate before applying it to the basket. This prevents the wax from building up between the basket weave.
Make a tag for the basket
This step is optional, but I thought my basket needed a little something extra special, so I decided to make a tag for it!
paint wood tag
I forgot to tell you, this is the only item I bought for this project!
Woo Hoo!! I had everything else at home! So it turns out that this is a super budget-friendly project for me! My favorite kind!
Remember, you can skip this step if you like!
Paint the wood tag. I chose the same white paint I used on the stripes of the basket.
Add a label
I found these labels from Dreams Factory for the Graphic Fairy. They were free and so pretty!
I printed them for a flower pot DIY I’ll be sharing soon!
Honestly, I probably wouldn’t have thought of making the label, if I hadn’t already found these!
I printed them on cardstock and cut out one of the labels.
Next, I used Elmer’s glue stick to adhere the label to the wood sign.
Then, I coated the tag with Mod Podge.
Attach tag to Basket
To attach the tag, I cut a piece of twine and put scotch tape around each end.
String the tag on the twine and then push the ends up through the slats of the basket
Tie a bow and knot it.
Basket before and after
Oh wow!
Are you ready to see the transformation!!
What do you think? I love it!!
Steps to make a Floral Basket Wreath
Now it’s time to work a little magic and turn this basket into a wreath for my front door!
Oh, and by the way, you don’t have to put this on your front door.
I’ll share several different ways you can use a basket like this in your home at the end of the post!
pin straps together
My basket is not flat on the backside. So, I’m going to pin the straps together, and hopefully, it will sit flat against the back of the door.
See how much flatter the front and back of the basket are now! Notice that I left one strap on the outside of the basket. I’ll use that strap to hang it on the door. I tucked the other strap inside the basket.
add floral foam
If you are going to keep this arrangement permanent, you can hot glue the foam to the bottom of the basket. I will probably take this apart after Spring. So, I pushed the foam into the bottom of the basket so it fits snuggly and will not move.
Arrange flowers
It’s time to add flowers to my basket! What do you think about white flowers? I think they would look beautiful in this basket. Luckily, I have several different types of white blooms! I’m going with wisteria and hydrangea.
Remove each stem with wire cutters. I also removed some of the leaves, because I want this to mostly look white!
Here is the basket after I added the wisteria. I thought it needed more so, I grabbed three hydrangea blooms and added them across the front!
Isn’t that just gorgeous!
I cant’ wait one more minute to style this beautiful floral basket wreath! Let’s see how it looks in the house and then we’ll try it on the front door!
display your floral basket wreath
place on a table
Hang on a mirror
Display on a shelf
hang on front door
Here is my wreath, in all its glory, hanging on my front door!
Oh my goodness, don’t look at those dirty windows lol!!!
As you can see, I have not started spring cleaning yet!
I think I’m going to wait a few more weeks before I display it on the front door, even though it feels like Spring outside!
I’m still enjoying the Winter wreath I made from my old sweaters!
