We have two large plastic tubs full of pinecones in our garage and over the last few years, we’ve tried to discover fun ways to use them in our decor so the tubs no longer take up valuable storage space!
For Christmas in July, I decided to make Christmas trees out of pinecone flowers, and was able to partially empty one of the tubs!
However, the project only allowed me to use the center parts of the pinecone, and I had all of the tops, numerous individual “petals,” and a few flowers left over.
So, I wanted to discover a way to use all of those parts of the pinecone!
The first thing that came to mind was to make ornaments to match my pretty trees.
Want to see what I came up with?
Aren’t they gorgeous!
I can’t wait to show you how I made them!
But first, I have a surprise for you!
Today’s post is part of the Amazing Creators Holiday Blog Hop!
That means you’ll get to see my DIY ornaments, and then you’ll be able to “hop” over and see how my blogging friends are preparing for Christmas!
Get excited because there is so much holiday inspiration including recipes, decorating ideas, tablescapes, DIY projects, and more!
All the links to my creative friends’ posts are at the end of the blog.
Now. let me show you how to make my inexpensive and easy pinecone and wood slice Christmas ornaments!
Pinecone Ball Ornaments
Gather
Gather the following supplies to make these ornaments:
- The top section of Weeping White Pinecones
- Pinecone flowers made from Weeping White Pinecones
- Styrofoam balls- assorted sizes
- Brown spray paint
- Pruners
- Screwdriver
- Hot glue gun & glue sticks
- Silicone finger protectors
- Jute twine
Paint
To begin, you will need to spray paint your styrofoam balls brown.
While they dry, cut the tips of the pinecones so they have three to four rows of “petals.”
Attach Pinecones
Use a screwdriver to punch a hole into the styrofoam ball.
Very carefully, put hot glue onto the end of the pinecone.
We suggest you use silicone finger protectors because the hot glue can burn you!
Continue the steps until the whole ball is covered with pinecone tips.
Make a Hanger
Cut a piece of jute twine ten inches long.
Knot the ends together.
Apply hot glue to the knotted end and press it into an opening in the pinecone ball.
Another type of pinecone ball
I also had some pinecone flowers left over from my Christmas trees and decided to attach those to a styrofoam ball!
Use the same steps as above to make this pretty ornament.
If you want more info on how to find pinecones or to cut pinecone flowers, see this post, How to Make a DIY Pinecone Flower Christmas Tree.
Wood Slice Pinecone Flower Ornaments
I still have a zippered sandwich bag filled with pinecone “petals,” so let me show you how I used them!
Gather
Gather the following supplies to make these ornaments:
- Separated pieces of pinecones
- Wood slice ornaments -Hobby Lobby -four ornaments per bag
- Half-round wood beads -Amazon
- Brown Sharpie marker
- Hot glue gun & glue sticks
- Silicone finger protectors
Prep the wood beads
Color the wood beads brown with a Sharpie and set them aside to dry.
Separate and Arrange Petals
Choose seven petals, approximately the same size, and then choose five that are a bit smaller.
Arrange the larger petals on the wood slice in a circle to see if they fit.
Adhere Petals
First, carefully fill the center of your flower with hot glue.
Then, lift each petal and put a drop of glue on the end of it.
Add more hot glue to the center of the flower and lay the smaller petals over the larger ones.
Add hot glue to the center, then place the wood bead on the top!

I’m so thrilled with how these ornaments turned out, and I think they look beautiful on our flocked tree!

Well, I think I’m going to have to go for a walk today and start collecting pinecones! These are both darling ideas. I used to make pinecone wreaths and trees with my mom when I was small, but we never made ornaments. I think it’s about time!
Donna Allen says
Hi Kim! I’m glad you enjoyed the post! I love that you used to make pinecone items with your mom! Now I know where you get your amazing creativity! Let me know if you make these!

Donna, these pinecone balls you created are amazing! Your hands must have been tired from all the cutting.
Pinned!
Donna Allen says
Hey Cindy! I cut most of the pinecones in July when I made the pinecone flower Christmas trees so this DIY was super easy! The weeping white pinecones are long and skinny which makes them easier to cut than the short fatter type! I’m glad you like the ornaments!
Linda Johnston says
