Why we installed a new shower head?
Have you seen pictures of amazing showers with rain-style showerheads that are mounted on the ceiling, creating the feeling you are showering under gentle rainfall?
Or what about the full-body showerheads that are installed at different heights in the shower and enable you to experience water splashing you from head to toe?
Can you imagine how luxurious it would be to have a shower like that?
Well, imagine our surprise when we walked into our new bathroom, with its huge shower, and saw this…
The original showerhead was terribly undersized and not adequate for such a large shower.
We don’t have the budget to rip out the shower and start over, so we decided to do the most cost-effective thing we could to solve the problem.
Rich replaced the shower head himself!
The new showerhead looks more proportional to the shower, has the feel of a rain shower, and has a handheld option! I think it looks so much better!
Why should you install a new shower head?
What kind of shape is your shower head in? Even if it isn’t old or worn out, you may want to consider changing it out.
Nowadays, showerheads have tons of new features and capabilities that make them worthwhile investments.
Low-flow showerheads use 2.0 gallons or less per minute and are an excellent money-saving options.
New showerheads are also more stylish and can completely change the look of your existing décor, without breaking the bank.
New showerheads have multiple water pressure options. You can choose a gentle rain to soothe your soul or a pressurized stream to massage the day away.
This is a very inexpensive, easy DIY anyone can do!
No plumbing skills are required!
So what are you waiting for?
Steps to install a new shower head
Our Winter Home Organization/Improvement Challenge is in full swing, and now we’ll show you how you can easily install a new shower head!
Gather
You will need to gather the following items and tools:
- Choose a new showerhead
- Adjustable crescent wrench
- Plumbers tape
- Pliers (optional)
prep
We have a little prep work before we begin the project!
Carefully read all instructions.
Unpack your new showerhead and examine the parts to make sure everything was included.
remove old shower head
Use your crescent wrench to loosen and then screw off the old showerhead.
Plumbers tape
Take off the old plumber’s tape from the threads on the outlet pipe.
Re-wrap the outlet pipe grooves with the new plumber’s tape.
Install new shower head
Screw lock nut onto the pipe. IMPORTANT: Tighten the connections by hand! DO NOT use a wrench or pliers!
The new showerhead has a switch and valve that need to be installed before the rainfall showerhead. This piece holds the handheld spray head and provides the connection of the hose.
Screw the piece onto the pipe securely, but do not overtighten.
Screw the new showerhead to the valve securely, but do not overtighten.
install hand held shower attachment
Unpackage the handheld spray head and hose.
Attach one end of the hose to the showerhead valve securely, but do not overtighten.
Pick up the spray handle.
Attach the other end of the hose to the handle. Look at instructions closely to see if the manufacturer recommends plumber’s tape. Our instructions did not say to use it here.
Now the fun part, turn on the shower to check for leaks. If you have a leak, tighten the connection. Our main connection leaked, and needed another quarter turn. If your showerhead has the valve and switch, be sure to turn the switch on and off to check both connections.
option for handheld shower
The hand-held shower head sits behind the rainfall showerhead, as seen in the picture below.
However, the manufacturer gives you a second option and provides a holder that can be installed lower on the shower wall.
If you choose this option, pick a good location on the shower wall and clean the tile. Peel back the red adhesive pad and apply the clear disk to the tile. Let dry for the instructed time before hanging the spray head.
Slide the holder pictured above onto the disk. Flip down the plastic lever to suction the holder to the disc.
Place the handheld shower in the holder.
Well, that is all there is to it. Simple improvement and what a big difference. Now we have a much more enjoyable showering experience. Does this inspire you to improve your shower? Let us know in the comments below.
