How to create a winter woodland wonderland
You can easily create this theme with a woodland-inspired Christmas tree and cozy living room accents.
To begin, choose earth tones like forest green, dark brown, and snowy white to capture the essence of the woods in your holiday decorations.
Next, bring the outdoors in with twigs, berries, birdhouses, lanterns, woodland creatures, pinecones, and mushrooms.
Let me show you how to use these ideas to create a nature-inspired winter woodland wonderland!
Steps to Decorate a Woodland Christmas Tree
Let’s start with the focal point in the room.
The Christmas tree!
I have a “recipe” I follow to decorate my trees.
It has six simple steps you can use no matter what your theme!
Let’s discuss each step!
1) Select and Prep the perfect Christmas tree
We put our tree up early and leave it until after New Year’s, so we have to use artificial trees!
Since my theme is winter woodland wonderland, we will use a flocked tree and greenery to give the feel of a snow-covered forest!
It’s important when putting up an artificial tree to fluff every branch!
The next step is to add lights!
We’ll use white lights to mimic the stars in the sky!
2) Craft a unique topper
We like to start at the top of the tree and work our way down!
Create a topper that reflects your theme!
We used two faux branches and two neutral silver-dollar stems.
Then, we placed a birdhouse and an owl in front of the stems.
3) Wrap your tree in a nature-inspired garland
The next step is to add a decorative tree garland that matches your theme.
This is not the first time we’ve done a woodland-inspired theme, so we already had this garland made with pine cones, twigs wrapped in rafia, and brown jingle bells.
Tuck your garland between the branches rather than wrapping it around the outside of the tree.
4) Choose ornaments that complement the theme
Now it’s time for our favorite part of decorating the tree, adding ornaments!
Owls
We found these adorable woodland creatures at Walmart!
And these came from Hobby Lobby!
My love of owls started in college because I was a Chi Omega, and the owl was our symbol!
DIY Pinecone Ornaments
Collect pinecones and add them to your tree, or get crafty and create ornaments from them!
You can see how to make these beautiful pinecone ornaments here.
Mushrooms
Mushrooms are popping up everywhere this year, and Christmas decor is no exception!
I considered making DIY mushroom ornaments, but when I saw these gorgeous specimens at Hobby Lobby, I bought them instead!
Orbs
I have a collection of orbs that work perfectly on the tree!
You can nestle them between the branches or attach a hanger to secure them.
DIY Wood Ornaments
Birdhouses and lanterns can be expensive, so I made my own.

Flocked Finial Ornaments
I was excited to find brown and tan flocked finial ornaments at Target because the colors went perfectly with the tree.
Unfortunately, they only had one box and have been sold out ever since.
I hope they bring these back next year so I can buy more!!
5) Add Drama with Floral Picks
Fill in empty spaces or holes in the tree with floral picks.
These picks are twigs covered in white glitter and miniature pinecones.
I love how the twigs stick out from the tree!
6) Finish with an Interesting Base
We chose to use a tree collar to cover the legs of the artificial tree!

Now it’s time to focus on the rest of the room!
Incorporate Cozy Living Room Accents
We’ll continue our Winter Woodland Wonderland theme by adding cozy accents to the rest of the living room!
Create a Forest Feel With Small Trees
We added more trees to this space to give the room the feel of being in a woodland forest!
You can get more details on how we decorated the small trees and how to make a DIY pinecone flower tree!
We created a neutral forest on the console table with bottlebrush trees and DIY yarn cone trees I made a few years ago!
Choose Seasonal Artwork
Last year for Christmas, Rich and I got a picture frame TV, and we are so happy with it!
It is so fun to change the artwork for every season!
We thought this deer fit perfectly with our theme!
DIY a Woodland-Inspired Advent Calendar
Our DIY Advent calendar blends beautifully into our woodland theme!
Add a Wreath
A wreath is an easy way to add Christmas decor to your indoor or outdoor spaces!
We added this cute owl, more orbs, and the same picks we used on the Christmas tree to bring a cohesive feel to the space.
Embellish a garland
To the garland, we added the same stems we used in the tree topper, orbs, berry picks, and pine cones!
Display a Centerpiece on Your Coffee Table
We created this beautiful centerpiece from a grapevine wreath, a flocked wreath, grapevine pieces, orbs, and pinecones.
Next, we stacked two books and set the Christmas tree on top.
Decorate a lantern
Since we used two small lanterns on the TV console table, we brought in a large one that matched.
Then, we embellished it with greenery stems, pinecones, and white velvet ribbon!
Fill baskets and vases with greenery and pinecones
To add interest to the items on the shelves, we added evergreen picks, berry picks, pinecones, and orbs to a basket and a vase.
Snuggle Up With a Throw Blanket
It can get cold in a Winter woodland, so you’ll need to add a warm, snuggly throw blanket to keep the chill away!
Get cozy with pillows
Don’t forget to add throw pillows to ramp up the warm and cozy factor!
These faux fur pillows are a favorite of ours!

Everything came together so beautifully Donna! I am loving those little birdhouses you picked up, they are a great addition to your tree. I know you said you take down your tree after New Years, but heck, I think you could keep it up all through winter! You have created the perfect winter wonderland if you ask me! I love it. We usually put our tree up in October some time, and take down after the first of the year too. Love your style, and how it all came together!

Everything about your decor is simply gorgeous. I love a winter woodland theme! We have a semi-woodland style tree, but it nowhere near as elegant. Lol. Maybe one day I will get there!

This is gorgeous! Currently I am in the season of my life where my Christmas tree is all for the kids, they decorate it and place the ornaments. A lot of the ornaments are hand made crafts. I will be excited to get back to making beautiful creations like this each Christmas, but right now I am soaking up every minute of letting my kids run the show. Thank you for sharing at Tell It To Me Tuesday, I hope to see you again this week.

Glad you enjoyed the post! We also have a “family” tree with all the ornaments my boys made and we gave them each year! They are in their 20’s now so the tree is getting quite full, lol! Enjoy them while they’re small, time goes by so fast!
