I think a rug would add so much beauty to the space but, I was wondering if it’s practical.
So, I weighed the pros and cons before making a decision!
Should you use a rug Under a dining table?
Pros
There are lots of perks to adding a rug under a dining table.
- Rugs protect the floor from chairs scraping back and forth.
- They help define your dining space by creating a focal point.
- Rugs add warmth and comfort to a space and help to muffle noise.
- They add style to the room by providing color and pattern.
Cons
Of course, there are some cons to having a rug under a dining table.
- Rugs are not practical for young children. If you have a baby or toddler that throws spaghetti on the floor, you may want to wait to purchase a rug!
- The cost may not be in your budget at this time. Many people purchase rugs that are too small for their table to save a few dollars. Save your money until you can buy the correct size rug for your space.
For us, the pros far outweigh the cons!

So, now let’s discuss how to choose the right size rug for your dining table!
How to determine the Right Size Rug
Measure the table
One of the biggest mistakes most people make is buying too small of a rug.
Measure the table and add 24 inches for each side of the table.
This will accommodate the chairs being pulled out to sit down.
If the rug is too small, the legs could catch on the sides or become a tripping hazard.
As you can see in the picture above, my chairs are pulled out and I have over 2 feet of rug on either side of the table!
The rug size I chose for my eat-in kitchen is 7′ 10″ X 10’2″.
Don’t forget the leaves
Does your table have leaves that allow you to expand its size?
Be sure to consider this when measuring.
We keep the leaves on our table the majority of the time, so I measured for my rug with the leaves in.
Measure the space
Now, you don’t want to buy a rug that is too big either!
Remember this is an area rug, and it’s not meant to touch the walls.
You should always leave at least six inches of floor space showing.
Also, your rug should not go under furniture that lines the walls, like a china cabinet, bar cart, or buffet.
What Shape rug should you use under a table?
Ideally, the shape of the table dictates the shape of the rug.
However, you can play around with the rules.
For example, you can use a round table on a square rug.
I have an oval table on top of a rectangular rug!
Did you notice the oval shape in the pattern of the rug mimics the shape of my table?
I think they look fabulous together!
How do you choose a Color and pattern?

Choose a color or colors that complement the decor in your home.
You want a cohesive look, so stick to the color palette and style of your home.
The pillow, in the picture above, belongs on our couch.
We have an open-concept home, so the colors in the kitchen eat-in area need to coordinate with the living room.
Don’t they go together beautifully!!
I love the soft neutral colors in my rug. The pops of blue are not overpowering, but add just the right amount of color!
Remember, darker colors will hide stains easier than a light-colored rug.

If you are going with a lighter color rug, consider one with a pattern that will camouflage spills that might happen!
What Type of rug is best?
Since the rug in a dining area will be more susceptible to spills and messes, you need to choose a rug that can be easily cleaned.
High-pile or textured rugs are not good choices for a dining area, as food can get stuck in it easier.
A low-pile or smooth rug will work best!
An indoor/outdoor rug can be a good choice because they are easy to clean!
