The tips are not hard but should be done consistently, for ease of maintenance.
To be honest, we slacked off last year and had to work hard this Spring to get our yard looking good again!
Let’s dive into the essentials of DIY lawn care and see what we did to make our home’s curb appeal soar!
Mow Like A Professional
If you want your lawn to look its best, you must do more than just cut the grass once a week!
Proper mowing Height and frequency
When we moved, we learned how important cutting your grass to the appropriate height is.
In Kentucky, we had a cool-season grass called fescue that should be kept 2 to 3 inches high.
But in Florida, we have a warm-season grass called zoysia that should only be 1-1/2 to 2 inches high.
We consulted a lawn care professional who told us we needed to cut our grass much shorter!
Do some research and make sure you are cutting your lawn to the right height!
Make sure you maintain a reliable lawn mowing schedule for your seasonal conditions.
We have to mow once a week for the majority of the season.
Edge For a well-manicured lawn
To get a professional look, you must edge around driveways, sidewalks, and flower beds!
Invest in an edger and maintain it properly.
This DIY lawn care step is huge for adding curb appeal to your yard, can you get over the before and after pictures?
Clean up debris
Mowing and edging can leave a mess behind.
If the mower leaves clumps or rows of grass, rake them up.
Use a blower to remove grass clippings from driveways, sidewalks, and porches.
Prune trees and shrubs
Prune trees and shrubs annually to maintain a well-shaped plant.
Remove no more than 30% of the plant during pruning because over-pruning can cause permanent damage.
Our favorite tool for trimming tall trees is a pole pruner and we use a hand pruner for low skinny branches.
We lay plastic around our shrubs before pruning them and then grab a plastic tub, garbage bags, and an electric hedge trimmer.
When we’re done, we gather the plastic and dump the debris into the plastic tub.
When the tub is full, we discard the debris into a garbage bag that will be collected on trash day.
This makes clean up easy and we have minimal leaves in our mulch!
Remove Weeds
Keeping landscape beds free from weeds and grass is a constant battle but having the right tools is helpful.
Our go-to’s are a stand-up weed puller tool and a claw hand rake.
At the beginning of Spring, we worked for hours every Saturday morning to clean up our landscape beds.
Now that we have it under control, we only spend minutes removing weeds!
Build weeding into your weekly routine and your life will be much easier!
Refresh Mulch
Mulch for a yard is like icing on the cake!
It makes everything look so pretty and it’s great for your plants.
Unfortunately, it will disintegrate and fade over time and needs to be spruced up!
If you don’t want to add new mulch annually consider rock instead.
Other ideas to add instant curb appeal
Update Light Fixtures and bulbs
A simple way to add curb appeal is to update your light fixtures!
New lights can transform the look of your front entrance or garage!
You should also consider updating your bulbs!
We added LED dusk-to-dawn light bulbs that turn on and off by themselves!
Not only are they perfect for increasing outdoor security levels, but they do it in a way that saves you time, effort, and money.
Hide Your Hose
If you don’t want to budget for an expensive hose reel and have an empty flower pot, here’s a clever way to store a hose!
This keeps it nice, tidy, and out of sight!
Add a Personalized Nameplate
A personalized nameplate is more than just an identification marker, it enhances the curb appeal of your home but also creates a lasting impression on your visitors.
A house name plate also serves a practical purpose by helping guests and delivery personnel easily locate your home, especially in a neighborhood with similar-looking houses.
Clean and repair porches
When we screened in our lanai the person who did it said we had to have a paved area outside the door to meet code.
They did a fabulous job installing the screens but the pavers were a mess and held water.
Because the water did not drain properly they became covered with mold.
Rich to the rescue!
He removed the pavers, power-washed them, put down a new paver base, and installed them with the proper angle away from the door.
It looks so much better!!
seal sidewalks and driveway
Look what a difference sealer made to the look of our brick pavers!
They look shiny and new again instead of faded.
More importantly, now they repel water adding years to their lifespan.
Plant flowers
My favorite flowers are hydrangeas and I have missed having them in my yard.
We planted them on the North side of our home and they only get morning sun but it’s so hot in Florida, I don’t know how they will do!
I don’t have a green thumb but I will give this my best shot!
If they survive, I’ll add more next year!
Fill Your porch with greenery
Another simple way to add curb appeal to the front of your home is to add plants to your porch.
If you don’t have the time or interest in growing real plants, consider purchasing faux!
decorate your Front Door for the seasons
Nothing says welcome more than a seasonal wreath on your front door!
Have fun and dress up your home for each season to add instant curb appeal!
In Conclusion
Achieving a stunning lawn that enhances your home’s curb appeal is well within your reach!
Remember, the key to a beautiful lawn is consistent care and attention.
So, roll up your sleeves, get started on these DIY lawn care steps, and enjoy the transformation as your curb appeal soars.

Cara says
Everything looks so fresh and well maintained Donna. I need that weed pulling tool, for sure. We have weeds with stickers, and I always seem to forget until I get the stickers in my palms and fingers. One would think I would remember, but lawn maintenance is one of the last things I like to do, ha! Have a wonderful weekend!
Donna Allen says
I can totally relate, Cara, that’s why ours was in such bad shape because we were totally procrastinating!!! It is a relief to have it looking good again! We are going to try our best to work in the yard a little bit each weekend to keep it under control! Wish us luck, lol!!!
