I instantly fell in love with them and was inspired to make a few ornaments for my tree that would match them.
So, I took my leftover materials and got to work!
Are you ready to see them?
Here you go!
I made these sweet ornaments with plastic toy containers, drop cloth, and ribbon!!
Let me show you how!
Steps to make vintage Christmas ornaments
Gather
Gather or purchase the following items to complete this project:
- Orbs- toy containers, styrofoam balls, glass ornaments
- White spray paint- optional to paint the orbs
- Drop cloth
- Ribbon-wired
- White rose trim-purchased from Hobby Lobby
- Elastic trim-purchased from Hobby Lobby
- Hot glue gun
- Hot glue sticks
- Silicone finger protectors
Prep
Drop cloth
Tear the drop cloth into 1″ X 12″ strips. Make cuts into the drop cloth to get started, but then tear the rest of the strip to get a frayed edge!
Ribbon
Cut the ribbon into 12″ strips. The ribbon I used was 2 inches wide, so I cut each strip in half.
Make rosettes
Twist the fabric strip and roll it into the rosette shape. Hot glue the sides together as you wrap it around.
I demonstrate each step in my tutorial for a vintage cone Christmas tree. Click here to see the details!
Make the ornament
Attach hanger
Cut a four-inch strip of elastic trim.
Just a note, I thought I was buying ribbon, but I did not notice it was elastic.
I decided to use it anyway!
Hopefully, it won’t stretch out since it won’t be used continuously!
Hot glue the ends onto the orb.
Adhere rosettes
Adhere the rosettes to the orb with hot glue. Use caution as the glue is very hot and can burn you! I highly recommend using silicone finger protectors!
It’s like putting a puzzle together!
I had to reduce the size of a few of my rosettes to make them fit!
If you have a small open space add a scrap piece of drop cloth to cover it.
It’s that simple!
This is a very easy DIY, but it does take some time to make the rosettes!
The time goes by much faster if you watch Hallmark Christmas movies while you make them!!
I think my vintage Christmas ornaments are so sweet and I love how they match the rest of my decor!
drop cloth messy ball ornament
I ran out of ribbon after making four ornaments, but I still had 3 plastic balls left over!
Since I still had plenty of drop cloth, I decided to make a different type of ornament!
Here’s what I came up with!
prep
Cut and tear the drop cloth pieces as instructed above.
Then, cut the 12″ strip in half, making two 6″ strips.
Next, cut each 6″ strip in half.
Now you should have four 3″ strips!
make the ornament
Attach hanger
Make a hanger as instructed above.
Adhere drop cloth pieces
Fold the piece of drop cloth and put a drop of hot glue in the center.
Pinch the glued end together!
See how handy those finger protectors are! It would be hard to do this project without them!
Add a drop of hot glue to the ball and press the drop cloth piece into it!
Continue around the ball until it is completely covered!
It’s messy but pretty at the same time!!
Display your ornaments
Here are the ornaments on my flocked Christmas tree in the living room!
I’m so happy with my DIY vintage Christmas ornaments!
Can you believe torn pieces of drop cloth and ribbon can turn into something so beautiful?

Very creative Donna. You’re so right about the fingertips. They save us from burning our fingers off.
Pinned!

Thanks, Cindy! Those finger protectors are a must for me! You know, every single time I try to use the glue gun without them, I get a blister!
