The before Pictures
Last week, I organized my desk. It was easy and all it needed were a few tweaks!
But I must confess, the rest of my office is a mess!
Even though I’m super organized sometimes things get out of control!!
You see, the more DIY projects I do, the more craft supplies I acquire, and the messier it gets!
So now it’s time for me to move things around, and come up with a better way to organize my craft supplies into similar categories.
I managed to keep these shelves in order, but I am going to relocate my scrapbooks to make more room for craft supplies!
Are you ready to organize?? Let’s get started and transform this space!
Use The 6/P Strategy to Organize YOur Craft Space
To start, we are going to use the 6/P Strategy! Just follow the following six steps that start with the letter P, and you’ll be organized in no time!
Prepare
Get the craft space ready to organize by grabbing four containers. I like to use the following: a trash bag, a cardboard box, and 2 laundry hampers.
Purge
Remove everything in the space except the furniture and sort all items into one of these categories.
- Trash-throw all unnecessary items in the trash bag
- Donate-put items you would like to donate into the cardboard box
- Relocate-any items that don’t belong in the space should go into laundry hamper #1
- Replace-items that need to stay in the craft space should be placed in laundry hamper #2 (or on a table if you have a lot of stuff). Put items in similar categories.
Polish
Now that everything has been removed from your craft space it’s time to clean! Remember to start at the highest point and work your way down!
Personalize
During this step you need to determine the following:
- How does the space need to function for your personal needs?
- What items do you need to make or purchase to contain items in this space?
PLACE
Now it’s time to place items back into the craft space in an organized manner.
- Discard the trash bag you filled up!
- If you have items to donate, don’t wait around, take them to the donation center soon!
- If you have items that belong in another room, deliver them now.
- Replace the items you removed from the space and put them back in an organized manner!
Put Back
If you want to keep your new craft space organized, you have to train yourself to put things back where they belong! If you can develop that habit, your craft space will stay clutter-free and you’ll enjoy doing crafts more than ever!
Best ideas to organize your craft space
Welcome to my transformed office!
Come on in, so I can show you my very best ideas to organize your craft space!
install a wall of bookshelves
Bookshelves are a fabulous and inexpensive way to add storage and style to your craft space.
It’s important to use vertical space whenever you can and bookshelves do just that!
You can store items in all kinds of different containers on the shelves.
Store supplies in matching bins or baskets
Matching bins and/or baskets are so functional and look fabulous because they bring a sense of order to any space.
I have a row of bins on top of my shelves and now, there’s an empty bin!
INCORPORATE PHOTO BOXES
Photo boxes can store a lot of different items besides photos.
They are durable and can be stacked if needed. They come in lots of different colors.
I purchased three new photo boxes from Hobby Lobby to store all of the photos you see in the picture! Aren’t they the cutest! I love the gold dots!
REPURPOSE ITEMS FOR STORAGE
Look around your house and see if you have items you can use for storage before you purchase new containers.
Costco photo boxes
I needed a bin to store yarn and ribbon! To keep the ribbon upright and separated from the yarn, I used the leftover photo boxes from Costco.
Fruit and pickle jars
Before my paintbrushes were laying in the bottom of this bin and I had to search for the one I wanted.
I grabbed some old pickle and fruit jars and viola, now the brushes are upright and separated!
Take advantage of magazine holders
Do you save magazines or have lots of documents and folders?
Magazine holders work great for lots of different kinds of items and look so orderly when placed in a group.
Use a lazy Susan for small items
Lazy Susans can come in handy in so many types of spaces and are great to store items in a craft room.
The Lazy Susan I have is divided and is wonderful for storing small items.
Organize items in modular cubes
Modular cubes work great for storing craft supplies.
They can be stacked and configured in lots of different ways. I purchased mine years ago from Michaels, but I don’t think they carry them anymore.
This type of modular cube is very easy to find and can be used with fabric cubes/baskets or without.
Show off your fabric
I had all of my fabric stacked on top of each other in a bin and it was impossible to find what I needed. So, I used pieces of cardboard leftover from a tile project, cut them to the size I needed, and wrapped the fabric around them!
Doesn’t that look amazing! It’s like I have my own little mini fabric store!!
Label everything
If you use bins that are not clear and you can’t see what’s inside, it’s very important to label the bin.
I just purchased these basket clip label holders from Amazon. I love how they look! The metal clips come in black or white. You also get black and white cards and markers to write on the labels. They provide everything you need to make amazing labels!
I use my label maker to add titles to photo boxes.
Invest in paper organization storage
If you scrapbook or make cards it’s so important to have some kind of paper organization system.
I use wire modular cubes to store my paper.
Create wrapping paper storage
I used to keep my wrapping paper in bins on the floor, but I decided to use the vertical space on one of my walls to hang the paper up! I made this wrapping paper holder from dowel rods and ribbon! The amazing fleur de lis hooks came from Hobby Lobby!
Make room for a flat work surface
My desk has amazing storage but it’s not made for crafting! I needed a flat work surface, so Rich made this craft desk for me! It has great sentimental value because the base is my Grandmothers’ Baby Grand piano! You can see the DIY project here. +
Surround yourself with beautiful things
If you have room in your craft space add a few items to decorate and uplift your spirit!
Creating a functional and beautiful space is a win-win!!!
