To say his bedroom was a cluttered mess is a bit of an understatement!
However, the transformation is pretty incredible!
Want to know how we did it?
First, I’ll share my tips n how we organized his collections.
Then, I’ll show you how we organized the rest of his bedroom.
And finally, I’ll share the simple strategy I use to organize every space in our home!
TIPS TO ORGANIZE COLLECTIONS IN A kid’s BEDROOM
USE VERTICAL WALL SPACE TO DISPLAY COLLECTIBLES
Griffin has a bit of an obsession with POP figures!
I agree they are cute, but if they’re scrunched together on a bookshelf, and you can’t see the ones in the back, why bother?
We had to come up with a better way to display them!
After a bit of research, I found these fabulous shelves on Amazon.
They are the perfect size to store all his figures!
COMBINE LIGHTING AND STORAGE
A fun way to add storage is to incorporate floor lamps that have shelves.
Too many stuffed animals were causing clutter on the shelves.
I had him pick his favorites to display, and the rest went in a plastic storage tub, stored under his bed, which brings me to our next tip!
Use space under the bed
Utilize the space under the bed for storage.
We used plastic tubs with lids.
Another great idea is to use large storage drawers on wheels, as we have in my youngest son’s bedroom.
USE BOOKSHELVES
Griffin had a TV cabinet in his room that we relocated.
Next to it was the bookshelf that you see below!
Even though we moved his POP figures to the wall, one bookshelf did not provide enough storage.
We relocated that shelf. Then purchased two more and put them on either side of the desk.
Now he has plenty of room to display his collection of books!
And his collection of sculptures he made.
TIPS FOR ORGANIZING A BEDROOM
Now that you know my tips to organize collections in a kid’s bedroom. Let’s tackle a few other areas of the room!
Clear off the NIGHTSTAND
Most people have a nightstand or a table next to their bed.
I suggest using a nightstand that has storage, if at all possible.
Check out all the clutter that had accumulated on his nightstand!
He emptied the drawer using the 6/P Strategy which I will show you below!
I purchased this drawer organizer set at Walmart.
Wow! What a difference an organizer can make!!
I highly suggest them.
If that’s not in your budget, make dividers out of boxes or cut pieces of cardboard to fit!
HANG SHOES
Another wonderful way to use vertical space is by hanging a shoe organizer on the back of a door!
You can use it for shoes or store other items like stuffed animals!
Declutter the desk
Griffin removed all the items on his desk and only replaced the ones he uses regularly!
Put cords in order
I can not stand a cluttered mess of cords! It’s time to get the chaos under control!
Rich purchased this white mesh cord holder to organize and camouflage the black cords.
Next, he attached a power strip with 8 outlets and 2 USB ports, and an extension cord to accommodate anything that needed to be used on the desk and plugged in. Beside it, he put an ethernet switch under the desk with command hooks to allow wired internet to be distributed to the TV as well as a laptop or video game console. He used the black split wire loom tubing to hold all the cords coming out of the power strip.
Now all of the cords are hidden under the desk instead of lying about on the floor!
ORGANIZE THE CLOSET
I like organizing the closet on a different day because it’s a big job
This year Griffin organized his closet by himself.

Do each of the six steps that start with the letter “P”:
PREP
Bring the following items to the bedroom:
A trash bag, a cardboard box, and two laundry hampers.
PURGE
Remove all items from the area you are organizing and place each in one of the following categories:
- Trash-Throw any expired or unwanted items in the trash bag
- Donate-place any items that you no longer use but are in great shape in the box to be donated
- Relocate-Place anything that does not belong in the bedroom in laundry hamper # 1
- Replace-Place any items that need to stay in the bedroom in laundry hamper #2
POLISH
Take this opportunity to give your bedroom a deep cleaning.
PERSONALIZE
It’s time to decide how you will organize the space to meet your personal needs. I have provided a printable to help you figure this out. Now, think about how to beautify the room. Now is also the time to decide what items you might need to make or purchase to help you contain the items you will be putting back into your bedroom.
PLACE
Now it’s time to place everything in its new spot!
- Trash-discard in your garbage can
- Donate-Don’t procrastinate! Take items to your local donation center right away!
- Relocate-take laundry hamper #1 and deliver items to the room they belong in
- Replace-place every item in the spot you have found for it.
PUT BACK
Remember, if you don’t put each item back in its appropriate place after each use, you will end up with a cluttered mess again!!

What a huge improvement, Donna, these organizational ideas are all amazing! I love how you kept the feel of the room and displayed favorite pieces still too. My nephews could definitely use these ideas for their Lego sets and the drawer organizers will be helpful for them too. I can’t wait to tell my sisters now! Hugs, CoCo

You’re so good at this Donna. Organizing is a gift, but you explain it well and that’s a gift to people like me. I have two boys and their room needs attention. Helpful advise here I will use. Probably not til January, but I will use it!!
