Winter has arrived (too early this year as far as I’m concerned) and I want to share the perks of switching out your clothes for the seasons. I know, you’re probably thinking that’s a hassle and if all of my clothes fit in the closet why should I switch them out for the seasons? Well, some big perks come with this chore, so you really should give it a try!
We woke up to snow on Tuesday morning and a couple of weeks ago it was 90 degrees.

You know, I would be happy if it only snowed on Christmas Eve so we could have a “White Christmas”! I just love Fall and feel cheated that the weather has gone from so hot to so cold!
I have a confession to make, I didn’t switch my closet from Summer to Fall clothes this year, but instead went straight to my Winter wardrobe.
Methods for switching clothes seasonally
I used to switch the clothes in my closet twice a year, from warm weather clothing to cold-weather clothing. I still do this for the boys in the house, usually in March and October!
But a couple of years ago I decided to try a four-season wardrobe instead. I love it and it’s been a lot of fun! So if you don’t switch your clothes out seasonally, you are missing out on some huge benefits. Here are my three favorite perks of switching out your clothes for the seasons!
Why you should make the switch
- Switching your clothes when the seasons’ change makes you feel like you’re getting a whole new wardrobe without spending any money! And on top of that, you won’t get bored wearing the same thing over and over.
2. Getting dressed will be an easy and enjoyable experience because your closet won’t be crammed full of clothes and you’ll be able to see all of the pieces you own. I used to stand in my closet full of clothes and think to myself, “I have nothing to wear” because I was so overwhelmed with having to make a decision. Having fewer pieces to choose from, makes my decision much easier!
3. Switching clothes seasonally allows you to purge regularly. The more often you do this the easier it gets! You should get rid of clothes that don’t give you joy to wear, don’t fit correctly or you never wear because they need to be ironed or mended.
How to make the switch
If this is the first time you’re doing a seasonal wardrobe switch, decide which approach you like better. Do you want to switch out clothes twice a year or four times a year? Either way, remove your clothes from the closet put and them in piles on the bed.
Four Season Switch
If you choose to do it every season make a pile for summer, fall, winter, and spring.
Warm and Cold Season Switch
If you decide to do it twice a year, you’ll have two piles, one for clothes you’ll wear when it’s warm and one for clothes you’ll wear when it’s cold.
Don’t forget a trash bag for items that aren’t in good enough shape to keep. Also, have a box for clothes you will be donating or selling.
How to store out of Season Clothing
I store our out-of-season clothing in plastic storage tubs and label them. I put them in a room in our basement.
3 Pack Large Clothes Storage Bag Organizer with Reinforced Handle
Someday when the budget allows I would like to purchase these containers to store my clothes. I like that you can see what’s inside and they’re not too tall to store them on my shelves. I think I’ll add them to my wish list!
Spacesaver Space Bags Vacuum Storage Bags
If you have very little room to store out-of-season clothing you can use vacuum bags like these. I used vacuum bags for the first time when we moved our youngest son to Montana for college and they worked great!
MaidMAX Cloth Storage Cubes Bins with Dual Handle
I store seasonal items like swimsuits, winter hats, scarves, and gloves in cloth storage bins on the top shelf of my closet. These bins are very similar to the ones I use.
Rubbermaid 68 Quart Under the Bed Low Profile Storage Boxes
If you need to store clothes under your bed, these work great! They have wheels so they’re easy to pull in and out. These also work great to store wrapping paper!
Can you believe how many perks you get by switching out your clothes for the seasons? Hope this has inspired you to start this practice in your home!! Good luck purging those closets!
