Whether you have extra bed pillows for overnight guests or throw pillows for different seasons or holidays, finding storage for them can be tricky!
Our Fall Home Organization Challenge is underway, and today, we’ll figure out what to do with all the pillows in our home!!
I pride myself on having an organized home, but I have a problem with collecting throw pillows!
So we’ll save those for last.
First, let’s discuss how to organize extra bed pillows and what to do with the decorative pillows on your bed at night!
Bed Pillow Storage
Where to store extra bed pillows for guests
The most obvious place to store extra pillows is the linen closet.
If you have a linen closet, consider purchasing plastic storage bags to keep your pillows dust-free!
If you don’t have a linen closet, here are a few other places you can store them:
- Top shelf in a bedroom closet
- In a plastic storage tub
- Empty dresser drawers
- Plastic storage that fits under the bed
- Vacuum-sealed space-saver bags
Here’s an informative post if you need help organizing a linen closet.
Where to Store decorative bed pillows at night
Would you love to add decorative throw pillows to your bed but have no clue where to store them at night?
Here are several ideas:
- Lay on a bench at the end of your bed
- Stack on a spare chair
- Utilize a trunk
- Use the shelf under a nightstand
- Tuck them in an oversized basket
Now you know what to do with throw pillows on the bed, but what about seasonal or holiday throw pillows?
The problem with decorative throw pillows
I have a confession to make!
I’m a bit obsessed with decorative throw pillows!
No bed, couch, or chair is exempt from me dropping a pretty throw pillow on it!
Every time I walk into a store, I see a seasonal throw pillow I would love to buy!
However, I can’t buy any because I have a ton of pillows, and I’ve run out of room to store them.
See for yourself, here’s the closet in our guest bedroom.
My pillows have overtaken the space, and there’s no room for our guests to hang their clothes!
I have to do something, and you know what?
I would not be in this predicament if I’d only known this little secret years ago!!
The secret I learned too late
Want to know the secret to storing throw pillows?
It’s simple…
The answer is pillow covers!
There’s no need to buy the whole pillow when pillow covers and inserts are available in stores and online!
If you love seasonal and holiday pillows as much as I do, make a rule to only buy pillow covers from now on!
But what if you already have a ton of throw pillows?
Let me show you how I organized mine!
How I organized my throw pillows
Sort pillows with covers
Gather all of your throw pillows in one room.
Examine the pillow to see if it has a zipper and can be removed from the pillow insert.
Remove the pillow cover, and measure the insert.
Right down the measurements so you will know what sizes and how many you have.
Neatly file fold all of the pillow covers and store them in a drawer, basket, or box.
Mine fit nicely in the bottom two drawers of the dresser in the guest room.
Next, let me show you what I did with the inserts to save space!
Store the inserts you are not currently using in vacuum-sealed space-saver bags.
I separated my feather pillow inserts and put them in a different bag because I have heard you should only shrink them to 50%!
Purge remaining pillows
Now comes the hard part!
I have to purge some of my throw pillows!
It’s time to decide which pillows to donate or sell.
It was a hard decision, but I had to let some of them go!
I am giving these pillows to a family member!
These pillows are being donated to charity.
Throw pillow Storage
Next, I have to decide how to store what is left.
At first, I thought I would shrink them all in the space-saver bags.
Then, I became concerned that the more intricate pillows might get too wrinkled.
Even though I could steam the wrinkles, I’d have another job I’d have to do.
So, I changed my mind and put them in plastic bags that my comforters came in.
They fit perfectly in the closet!
My organized guest room closet
I feel so relieved to have this closet organized and my pillow clutter under control!
Now, our guests can hang their clothes without worrying that an avalanche of pillows will fall on their heads, lol!
Are you wondering what is under the black trash bags on the right side of the closet?
It’s two Coleman sleeping cots for when we run out of beds!
Well, that’s a wrap on pillow storage and organization!

Such a great post, Donna! I know so many people who like to change their pillows out for each season but struggle because they don’t know how to store them. We’ve gone to strictly pillow covers at this point but had them in special bins under the bed for years and it worked out well. Hugs and thanks for making organizing easy, CoCo

Using plastic bins under the bed is a great tip, CoCo! Thanks for sharing that! Wish I would have known about pillow covers sooner! Take care, Donna

Hello! Sounds like you have no choice but to use the vertical space on walls or doors. Have you ever used shoe storage bags that hang on a door? You can roll your towels instead of folding them and put them in the slots! Hope that helps!
