What is a Breakfast Board?
A breakfast board is a sampling of breakfast foods displayed on a large cutting or serving board.
It’s a take-off of the classic charcuterie, which is a French term for cured meats served on a tray. The modern definition typically refers to meats, cheeses, bread, crackers, and spreads served on a board. Today, we see many charcuterie trends like the dessert board, butter board, vegan board, and what we’re making today, a breakfast board.
Breakfast boards can go by different names as well! It could be called a breakfast charcuterie board, breakfast grazing board, breakfast platter, brunch board, etc. You get the idea!
Reasons to Make a breakfast board
Here are some of the reasons why making a breakfast board is a fabulous idea!
- Makes breakfast special- Sure you can just make breakfast and serve it on a plate, but a breakfast board is a beautiful presentation and makes the meal feel different and unique for a special occasion.
- It’s so easy- You don’t need any special skills, anyone can make a board like this! If you don’t have cooking skills, that’s okay, simply choose pre-made items from your local grocery store or bakery!
- Makes a gorgeous centerpiece- You won’t need a centerpiece if you put an amazing breakfast board in the center of the table!
What Breakfast foods will you include?
You can make a breakfast board centered around one type of breakfast food. For example, if your Mom’s favorite is waffles, make a board with waffles and surround them with all the items you can top them with.
Or you can make a board with a sampling of different types of breakfast foods.
You can choose any foods you want, but here are some suggestions to help you decide!
Protein
Bacon, sausage links or patties, country ham, hard-boiled, scrambled, or fried eggs.
Bakery Items
Muffins, croissants, bagels, toast, waffles, pancakes, french toast, or biscuits.
Fruit

Dairy
Yogurt, cream cheese, chocolate chips, or butter.
Condiments

Garnish
Herbs or flowers.
Set a simple table with paper products
Did you know you can set a beautiful table and decorate the area with paper items from a store like Walmart?
We found this adorable garland, paper plates, and napkins from the Pioneer Woman.
Your Mom will be so impressed and no one will need to do the dishes when you’re done eating!
If your Mom loves flowers, surprise her with a beautiful floral arrangement from a bouquet of grocery store flowers!

Gather
Gather or purchase the following items:
- The base- most people use a wooden cutting board. It can be large or small. If you don’t have a wooden board, don’t let that stop you. You can use a platter, serving tray, or baking pan covered in foil. Get creative!
- Small dishes- glass bowls or ramekins work beautifully to hold condiments like syrup or chocolate chips.
- Food items- time to go shopping for all the food you will use on your board.
Prepare
Think about the food you chose and decide what can be prepped ahead of time.
Some items can be prepared the day before:
- Make bakery items.
- Clean and prepare the fruit.
- Hard boil and shell eggs.
On the day of:
- Put items that need to be contained in the small bowls.
- Slice bread, croissants, or bagels.
- Cook hot items and keep them warm in the oven until time to assemble the board.
Assemble
This is the part where you can be super creative!
There are no rules you need to follow but if you’d like some guidance, this is how we put ours together!
Place bowls first
Add the protein
Sprinkle in bakery items
