Do you have a basket in your home that could use a makeover? I have several that need some help! I will take an old picnic basket and upcycle it to match my current decor!
Rich and I received this basket as a wedding gift and have enjoyed using it for 28 years!

I store Christmas ribbons inside of it, and I like to display the basket in different areas of our home!
It’s coming apart in a few places, but is still functional for my needs!
I think it’s time for a little makeover!
Gather
Gather or purchase the following items to complete this project:
- Picnic basket
- Primer-Rustoleum Flat WhitePrimer
- Spray Paint-Rustoleum Satin White
- Wood sign-purchased at Dollar Tree
- French transfer-redesign with Prima
- Painter’s tape
Prep
Vacuum your basket
Prep the area where you will spray paint.
There is cardboard on our garage floor, and I laid down an old poncho filled with holes.
Paint
Turn your basket upside down and sit it on top of four paint stands to elevate it off the ground!
Prime the basket
Hold the can 10 to 12 inches from the basket.
Use short back-and-forth strokes to apply the primer.
Keep the can in constant motion.
Allow the basket to dry to the touch.
Turn the basket over and apply the primer to the top.
Prime the wood sign
I almost forgot about the wood sign I’m going to add to the front of the basket!
Remove the string from the wood sign by cutting the twine in the center.
You will have two equal pieces of twine that you need to keep!
Do not throw them away because you will use them later.
Look closely at the picture above, and you’ll notice I neglected to prime the underside of the handles.
So, I hit those with primer and then sprayed the sign!
paint
Originally I planned to paint the basket with chalk paint and a brush.
After priming the basket, I remembered how quick and easy spray paint is and decided to go that route instead!
Yes, I took the easy road, lol!!
And this is what it looks like now!
Add a transfer
I want to add a bit extra interest to the basket, so I’m going to add a decor transfer to the wood sign!
This will elevate my picnic basket upcycle to the next level!
I purchased Classic Vintage Labels by re-design with Prima.
I’m going for a vintage French country vibe, and the label will help give me that look!
Choose a transfer and cut it out.
Remove the backing and place the transfer onto the wood sign.
Secure the transfer with painter’s tape.
Use the tool that came with the transfer and rub it evenly all over the design.
You may have to rub it with moderate force to get it to release from the backing paper.
Lift a corner to see if it is attached to the sign, and gently pull the backing away.
If any pieces do not transfer, reposition the sheet and rub again.
This is the first time I have used a decor transfer, and I’m hooked!
This technique is so easy, and it looks beautiful!
I’m going to search my house to find more things to add these transfers to!
Attach sign to basket
Such an amazing transformation!
Remember the piece of twine we cut off the sign?
Each piece has a knotted end and a cut end.
Grab them and put some scotch tape around the cut end.
Now the twine will be easy to insert through the hole of the sign.
Push the taped end through the hole on the front of the sign.
Then, push it through the basket’s handle and tie it off!
Repeat on the other side!
Before and After
Here are side-by-side pictures of the picnic basket before and after the upcycle!
