Use the 6/P Strategy
We’ll use the 6/P Strategy to help you obtain an organized and lovely laundry room! Do each of the following steps (if you need info on how to do the 6/P Strategy click here)
PREP
Collect the following items: A trash bag, a large cardboard box, and 2 laundry hampers.
PURGE
Remove everything from the laundry room except the washer and dryer and any cabinets.
- Purge any items you no longer use or are empty and put in a trash bag.
- Donate items that are in good condition that you don’t use anymore and put them in a box.
- Remove items that don’t belong in the laundry room and put them in a laundry hamper.
- Place all items that you want to keep in the room in the second laundry hamper.
POLISH
Now that the room is empty, you can clean using a top-down approach. Clean the following items:
- Cobwebs from ceiling
- Light fixture
- Door and all trim
- Cabinets and any shelves
- Washer and dryer, inside and out
- Door knobs and switch plates
- Baseboards
- Vacuum and mop the floors
PERSONALIZE
It’s time to personalize the area, so be sure to print the Personalize the Laundry Room printable to help you brainstorm ways to improve the function and beauty of your room.
Changes we made to personalize the room
I spend a lot of time in my laundry room and wanted to make it more visually appealing so I would enjoy my time in the room rather than dread going in there! I just love the color I painted it. It’s called Retro-Colonial Blue by Valspar. To update the floors, we ripped out the old laminate and added a luxury vinyl plank called Tivoli Travertine.
To make the room easily accessible for our cat, we added this cute pet walk-through.
I wanted a place to store the vacuum and cleaning supplies out of sight. So we bought this cabinet and placed it next to the existing shelf.
Storage and decor items
The storage I choose has worked perfectly and makes the room function more efficiently and I think it looks great too!! What do you think?
This decorative item also provides instruction.
I have several items of clothing that I hang up to dry. So, I added the clothes rack to my laundry room and when items are dry, I roll it into my closet to transfer the clothes!
I bought this cute trash can and didn’t want to cover it up with a trash bag. So, I came up with the following idea and it has worked great. I cut up a zip lock bag box and put the liner over it and then tucked that in the trash can!
PLACE
- Time to put things where they belong!
- Throw the trash bag away.
- Take your box to a donation center.
- Relocate items in the first laundry hamper to the room they belong in.
- Take items out of the second laundry hamper and put them in categories.
Here are a few categories of items that may be in your laundry room:
- Laundry supplies
- Cleaning supplies
- Paper supplies
- Plastic supplies
- Pet supplies
- First-aid supplies
- Household supplies
Consider storage bins to corral items that you put into categories. Here are pics of the categories I have in my laundry room and how I placed the items back in the room.
Shelves above washer and dryer
I think it’s very important to label items so everyone in the home knows what’s inside. I love these chalkboard labels.

Plastic drawers for storage
I added scrapbook paper to plastic drawers to make them look nicer and tie into the color scheme. Then, I added labels to the front of the drawers and used a chalk marker.

PUT BACK
This is such an important part of keeping your home organized! You’ve taken the time to organize your items and if you don’t put them back where they belong, clutter will build up again quickly!
I hope you enjoyed this post and are excited to have an organized and lovely laundry room too!!!
