I hope this post inspires you to organize your space and transform your laundry room into a place you enjoy working in!
So here we go.
Use the 6/P Strategy To Organize Your Laundry Room.
We have a simple 6-step strategy to help you obtain an organized laundry room!
Do each of the following steps that start with the letter “P”:
1) PREP
Before you start organizing, we suggest getting our printable sheets to help manage your laundry room!
Our email subscribers receive them for free. You can sign up here to access our entire printable resource library.
Collect the following items: A trash bag, a large cardboard box, and two laundry hampers.
2) PURGE
Remove everything except the washer, dryer, and cabinets from the laundry room.
- Purge any items you no longer use or are empty and put in a trash bag.
- Donate items in good condition that you don’t use anymore and put them in a box.
- Remove items that don’t belong in the laundry room and put them in a laundry hamper.
- Place all items you want to keep in the room in the second laundry hamper.
3) POLISH
Now that the room is empty, you can clean using a top-down approach.
Clean the following items:
- Cobwebs from ceiling
- Light fixture
- The door and all trim
- Cabinets and any shelves
- Washer and dryer, inside and out
- Door knobs and switch plates
- Baseboards
- Vacuum and mop the floors
4) PERSONALIZE
It’s time to personalize the area, and we recommend using the Personalize the Laundry Room printable to help you brainstorm ways to improve the function and beauty of your room.

I spend a lot of time in my laundry room and wanted to make it more visually appealing so I would enjoy it rather than dread going there!
Here are the steps we took to personalize our laundry room!
Paint
Paint is an easy and inexpensive way to change the entire look of any space!
I adore the color blue we chose!
It’s called Retro-Colonial Blue by Valspar.
New Laminate Floor
We ripped out the old laminate to update the floors and added a luxury vinyl plank called Tivoli Travertine.
Modification for Pet
To make the room easily accessible for our cat, we added this cute pet walk-through.
Here is the front of the door!
Can you guess what it looks like on the back?
Here you go. How adorable is that?
Storage Closet
I wanted a place to store the vacuum and cleaning supplies out of sight.
So we bought this cabinet and placed it next to the existing shelf.
Storage Baskets
I found these wire storage baskets to place on the shelves above the washer and dryer.
There’s nothing better than functional items that look great and double as decorations!
Functional Sign
This cute laundry sign looks fabulous and provides instructions on how to do the laundry!
Clothes Rack
I have several items of clothing that I hang up to dry.
So, I added the clothes rack to my laundry room, and when items are dry, I roll them into my closet to transfer the clothes!
Trash Can
I bought this cute trash can and didn’t want to cover it with a trash bag.
So, I came up with the following idea, which has worked great.
I cut up a zip lock bag box, put the liner over it, and tucked it in the trash can!
I hope you enjoyed seeing how I personalized our laundry room; now, let’s get back to organizing!
5) PLACE
It’s time to find a new place/home for all the items in our laundry room. Do the following steps:
- Throw the trash bag away.
- Take your cardboard box to a donation center.
- Relocate items in the first laundry hamper to the room they belong in.
- Take items out of the second laundry hamper and put them in categories.
Here are a few categories of items that may be in your laundry room:
- Laundry supplies
- Cleaning supplies
- Paper supplies
- Plastic supplies
- Pet supplies
- First-aid supplies
- Household supplies
Consider storage bins to corral items that you put into categories.
Here are pictures of the categories in my laundry room and how I placed the items back there.
Shelves Above the Washer and Dryer
We chose fabric cubes to store items on our shelves because they are inexpensive and look pretty.
Next, I added a chalkboard label to each bin so everyone in the house knows what’s inside.
Here we have storage for light bulbs and cleaning cloths.
On the opposite side, we have batteries, plastic storage/garbage bags, candles, and flashlights.
Then, we added woven bins to store toilet paper and paper towels.
Inside the Cabinet
Here are the items we placed inside our new cabinet.
I placed the vacuum accessories in a gray fabric cube and our iron and pet cleaning supplies beside it.
The middle shelf holds a basket filled with house cleaning supplies and a backstock of spray cleaners.
The cleaning basket can be easily carried to any space in the house when needed!
The bottom shelf holds the vacuum, broom, and dustpan.
I’m so happy they are now out of sight!
Open Shelves
We used stacked plastic drawers on the shelf above the cabinet to hold candles, extension cords, and first aid supplies.
The open shelves have large plastic drawers for tape, string, and pet meds/grooming supplies.
I added scrapbook paper to plastic drawers to make them look nicer and tie into the color scheme. Then, I added labels to the front of the drawers and used a chalk marker.
Pet Food
This shelf holds the pet food stored in a large plastic container.
The bottom shelf holds the cat food and water dishes.
6) PUT BACK
You’ve taken the time to organize your items; if you don’t put them back where they belong, clutter will build up quickly!
Please don’t neglect this step; it is essential to keeping your home organized!
Conclusion
I hope you enjoyed this post and are excited to have an organized and lovely laundry room, too!!!
